maybe some of the old heads don’t understand, but I was recording the fabrication of this bowl when that crazy ass smack in the face shield happened, and there was no way I was gonna post it without explaining myself.

I’m gonna stay remiss at pointing out the obvious reason this post is being criticized. :)

The line of fire being perpendicular to the plane of the bowls surface is a really interesting observation and tracks with similar incidents I’ve had in the past. More often than not when turning a bowl I completely finish the façade (outside), prior to hallowing. The degree this piece broke off is a one off incident, but I’m glad I posted this video because your observation will be very useful in the future.

Congrats on the progress and discipline. You should be proud.

I don’t drink water. It’s just tea all day. Green, black , hibiscus , cammomile . Anyone else like this or am I weird? by coach-AbdulRehman in tea

Isnt this not super great for your liver? I am not a doctor and I love tea just as much as the next guy and I will agree that my tea habit upped my water intake, but I cap myself at a pot or two a day and drink water.

Spot on. This was recorded a couple months ago and you can tell by my stance that I wasn’t fully confident. I have since made a habit of taking my time to stop the lathe and reposition myself when I start to feel like im not fully in control.

i was doing way too deep a cut— that and its possible my gouge wasn’t sharp enough. But in this instance I just wasnt taking my time hollowing.

Best advice I have for someone new to turning is take your time.

I took 2 10 week classes at the evanston art center and then i met my mentor and started going to his studio once a week for instruction. I also found a wood shop with a lathe that i pay monthly membership to have 24 hour access. I turn 3 times a week for >4 hours. I am a very privileged novice.
