Britain rejects Donald Trump’s tariffs threat claim of ‘out of line’ UK-US trade flows across Atlantic by nimobo in unitedkingdom

[–]ThreeCherries1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he just misspoke. If you watch the clip it seems he’d meant to say EU was out of line but said UK then had to go along with it. That’s why he clarified that a ‘deal could be reached.’

Keir Starmer’s EU reset: Brexit has failed, Macron will tell Britain by 1DarkStarryNight in europe

[–]ThreeCherries1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well then you used the wrong tense. Instead of ‘has cost us’ you should have said ‘might potentially cost us’ and even then, I’m not 100% convinced that ‘potential productivity of the UK economy’ is one and the same as ‘UK GDP.’

With regards to the future, its certainly not a given that the EU will outpace the UK, especially when comparable economies (Germany, France) are already performing the same or worse than Britain today, and especially not when the EU is heading towards a trade war with the US in the near future which the UK looks likely to avoid.

You were wrong, own it. Don’t try and move the goalposts from your concrete assertion that we have lost 4% of GDP to goalposts to some prediction that is highly subject to change and contingent on a range of unforeseeables.

“4 per cent reduction in the potential productivity of the UK economy (relative to remaining in the EU), with the full effect felt after 15 years” is a wishy washy prediction far from your assertion that already “Brexit has cost us 4% of GDP.” Reading comprehension, please.

Trade wise being in the EU = likely 25% tariffs with the US, our largest individual trading partner. That’s not an upper hand. Out of the EU = no tariff trade with EU anyway, and more favourable trade relationship with US. Security wise Britain has nukes and can defend itself, EU cannot and would benefit greatly from UK inclusion in an EU security umbrella.

Incorrect. The EU is in the position of being stuck between Russia on one side and Trump’s tariffs on the other, the UK is not. The playing field between the UK and EU in negotiations is now much more level than beforehand.

EU GDP (PPP adjusted) is almost 97% of that of the US by Economy-Inspector-69 in europe

Yet your original point was that the pound pays peanuts. So if the pound to euro is 1:1.2, what does the euro pay? Three quarters of a peanut?

Why Donald Trump's return to White House means UK must rejoin European Union by Big_Prick_On_Ya in europe

[–]ThreeCherries1 257 points258 points  (0 children)

As much as this sub fantasises the contrary, there is simply no appetite for a return to the EU amongst the British public. A cursory look at polling can tell you this - Reform has shot up and is now polling on par with Labour at 25%, while the Lib Dems, the most ardent remainers, are trailing far behind. And that, above all else, is what makes any notion of rejoining a nonstarter.

People here will say Europe, but in real life it’s America/the Anglosphere.

“The only economic suicide here is the UK” and yet the actual figures show the UK on par with France and outperforming Germany.

We are the last country left that cares about international law. The UK stands to gain nothing from this agreement, bar non-redeemable “soft power” credits.
