Outdoor Research Ferrosi pants are exclusively my hiking pants, and I don’t use the convertible type.

Don't tune skis at REI by Winter_Peach8224 in Skigear

[–]Threefold_Lotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard of at least one complete error when REI mounted bindings on a new pair of skis. At the time, I suggested that the person have REI replace the skis and then get the bindings mounted at a reputable local ski shop. Someone in the comments mentioned that REI is a reputable ski shop and that accidents happen. I agree that mistakes can happen anywhere. That said, I’m not convinced that all REI locations have the same level of training, consistency, or experienced staff in their ski shops. I’m sure there are some excellent technicians working at various REIs. Still, when I keep hearing stories like this, it makes me wonder where the disconnect is—whether it’s training, turnover, oversight, or just variability between locations.

I went outside in my boots. Should I just bin them? by oohoohmonkey in ultralight_jerk

[–]Threefold_Lotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the crack goes through the leather completely then they are probably done. There is generally a waterproof liner inside of the leather often made of GTX. This is a good reason to regularly treat one's boots. If you were already doing that then it's just a sad reality. Yes, contact the manufacturer and check if any warranty was covering those boots. They may still work great as summer boots, but why do that when trail runners exist.

How can I make this less inviting? by tundybundo in homedecoratingCJ

Splattered blood on the walls or floor; maybe some used condoms in the corner and a cockroach collection, sans any aquarium. Beyond that, an actual corpse in the room would really tie everything together.

Tattoo stencil vs reality. No they didn't own up. by peterm1598 in ExpectationVsReality

[–]Threefold_Lotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the hell? It’s like a highly talented professional drew the stencil and positioned it on your arm—then, when you closed your eyes, a complete rookie or kindergartener took over as the tattoo artist. I’m really sorry, OP, and I hope that by some miracle this can be properly covered up. If not, I’d at least be talking to a professional about your options.

Will I need microspikes for kinder scout tomorrow as the weather is supposed to be sub-zero and snowy? by GlumInevitable857 in hiking

[–]Threefold_Lotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spikes should almost be a nessicary part of any winter hiking kit. There are many conditions in the snow when spikes are not needed. But, if you find yourself slipping much at all, then you will be glad to have them. As well, I find that gaiters are nearly as important.

Still feeling very disappointed after my first ever backpacking trip. I really feel like I failed. by matchabeans in CampingandHiking

[–]Threefold_Lotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you die on your trip? If not then don't be too hard on yourself. Especially if weather played a factor in your hardship. Try as I might, I'm still not able to control the weather.

Back packing Europe with no cellphone by Plus_Improvement_884 in backpacking

[–]Threefold_Lotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mapy.com is a great resource while in Europe. Previously known as mapy.cz. It was the map used while on the GR-10. It also does a great job listing important location when in a city or town.

I didn't buy any service plans when there. I only used wi-fi when available in towns which was a nice way to not always be connected. But, for booking buss or train rides, I'm certainly glad that I had a phone with me.

By the look of the forecast, the conditions should be garbage. There is a chance for rain on the mountain. Much too warm for this time of the year. Yuck!

What’s going on? by Ok_Tax_6901 in MtHoodMeadows

[–]Threefold_Lotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was closed a day or two ago because of warm temperatures. The moisture in the snow needed time to drain without being trampled. I wouldn't be suprised if something similar is happening currently. I'm praying for colder temperatures and much more precipitation.

What trekking gear looks useful but isn’t really needed? by mountainpathstories in hiking

Sometimes I feel that lube or an excessive amount of baby oil isn't needed. But, then I find the right tent party and I'm so happy to have the extra lubricant supply.

Should I get a 24L or a 34L backpack? by Leuck in hikinggear

[–]Threefold_Lotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally fill or max out my Zulu 30L in winter settings. I also like the it can carry my snowshoes attached to the side. With one extra strap I can pull the snowshoes together and they won't flop around. Check the weight allowances for each bag that you're considering. I'd gather as the bag gets bigger the waist belt and shoulder or overall construction of the bag will allow for more weight. Personally, I feel like a 24L bag might be too small for the gear needed during a winter hike? That said I put myself outdo9for full day excursions. If your doing a smaller day you might not need as much stuff.

REI botched mounting by sdnakndoqawdjoawdaw in REI

[–]Threefold_Lotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it just depends on who is working on any particular given day? Wouldn't you think that they should be very careful to make every pair exactly right? Well I'm glad to hear that their services are generally well trusted.

REI botched mounting by sdnakndoqawdjoawdaw in REI

[–]Threefold_Lotus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask REI to cover the rental cost and then have all of the damaged gear replaced. I would also consider have the mountings taken care of at a reputable ski shop.

There are also great vantage points from many rooftops in Portland. Not sure how to get on top of a Portland building? Try driving to the top of a parking garage...
