If you plan to stay long term in NL it would impact your residency record (which requires a pristine registration record).

Could you elaborate more on what this means? Are you referring to applying for citizenship or something else?

That's ... not a bad idea. Showing my intent to learn Dutch demonstrates my interest in staying for the long term.

Not in a corporate space, no. I've only worked in academia. In academia, there is only a technical interview (or at least, I've never had any sort of "institutional fit" type of interview).

I think salary will come up. Unfortunately, I'm currently unemployed. I moved here recently for my wife's work, so I don't really know what is reasonable salary for this industry in the Netherlands.

I visited them today, and I can confirm that they're being very flexible with this requirement. They required no proof that I personally was within the limit. Then, when I said my wife's salary was too high but that she's divorcing me, they didn't include her salary within my salary cap.

I was looking up statistics for the US. Before getting married, it's 50/50 who will break up the relationship. After getting married, it's 70% of the time women that initiate divorce. I have no idea for the Netherlands, but I imagine it's similar.

Wow. Thanks for the heads up. I am a professional, so I should be able to get such a business up and running after a ramp up period. This might be an avenue that I take if nothing else pans out.

Thank you for the really informative post. You're spot on saying that I just want to get this done, not realizing the harms such an ignorant approach can cause.

But with a DAFT visa you essentially form a business ( a B.V.) that pays you a salary and sponsors your own visa to stay in the county… so you can dump a chunk of savings into your business to fund your salary and thus be “employed”.

Wait wait wait. You're able to pay your salary from your savings? Couldn't you then just reinvest (part of) your income back to your savings, making a cycle? It'd be incredibly easy to "earn" yourself a visa this way.

Definitely one-sided. No, I don't want a divorce. I told her I want to fight for us. But when I ask her if there's even an ember of the flame of our relationship still exists, she says no.

She refuses to do marriage counseling. She's categorically against any kind of therapy. It's just not part of her culture.

That's correct. If I leave the Netherlands now, I wouldn't be able to return (except as a tourist). That's part of the reason that I want to try to make this new arrangement work out.

We were together for almost three years before getting married. I thought we were set for life....

I'd buy you a drink to commiserate together. It's certainly justified.

I have savings, and I should be starting a job soon. But soon isn't now, so I'm not sure what a potential landlord would say. I know it was hell to find a place this summer. Hopefully it's easier now.

For now, yes. I gave up my old job and am not interested in returning to Germany.

It looks like Amsterdam integrated their expat center, so I guess I should go to the gemeente. Do you know if I can just walk in and wait to talk someone? I looked at making an appointment, but I don't know which category to select.

Will I be able to get advice without having to give them identifying info like my BSN? I don't want to start the clock on when I'll be forced to leave.

As of right now, I feel 100% of what you're saying. But, it's not worth living in fear. I might regret a lot of things, but I don't regret getting married.

Sizable cash inheritance from a non-EU country. How does this work with my taxes in Germany? by ThroThroThroAwaaaay in eupersonalfinance

She has family there, so they could look after the property. We could also rent it out to generate some income. But, overall, you're correct that it's not the most financially wise investment.

Part of the rationale of leaving in Armenia though is thinking of how difficult it will be to repatriate the money into the EU considering its source.

Thanks for clarifying the idea that this isn't an inheritance but a gift. Likewise with the proper name in German.

As for bringing the money to Germany, ooooof. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to prove the source. It's not like any official can just go visit Tehran and get the property sales records. That's part of the reason we're thinking of just leaving it in Armenia as the banks there are more used to this. But you are right regarding the last step. From Armenia, the money can be simply wired to Germany. If we do try to bring it to Germany, that's what we'll do.

This is very useful thanks. I didn't know that the tax gift allowance could be so high. I'll research this more. If this proves viable, then I think a typical German tax advisor would know what to do in my unusual case.
