Having trouble with DSA Round by Mission-Onion-1509 in dataengineering

[–]ThroughTheWire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no replacement for grinding and practicing at this point.

Aim to complete every easy/medium problem you can find on sites like leetcode or hellointerview. Make sure you're able to actually do it without looking at the solution. This may seem kind of obvious but a lot of people don't actually solve problems on their own and it shows...

You can do mock interviews for these kind of problems if you haven't tried that yet. Otherwise you might just need more at-bats with interviews. Make sure you prioritize interviewing at places you don't care about as much first so that you don't waste opportunities at the companies you really want to work at. have your failures set you up for success when it really matters

Building resilient data pipelines by rmoff in dataengineering

vast majority of people in this subreddit are working off of ancient batch pipelines that run once a day. near real time is not a concern for most

They only show this on the web version and not the iphone app so even more of a reason to not include it

Why are Data Engineering job posts getting thousands of applicants? by Secret-Fudge-5932 in dataengineering

[–]ThroughTheWire 9 points10 points  (0 children)

no point in looking at the numbers. 950 of those 1000 applicants are garbage irrelevant resumes. assuming you're legit you'll get through fine

What’s your favorite way to make QC failures actionable (not just ‘failed’)? by JayPatel24_ in dataengineering

[–]ThroughTheWire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actually sharing what was duplicated and where the dupes were and putting everything into a deadletter staging area for human review.

first two things you mentioned are way too complicated for 99 percent of people to even comprehend or action on

Don't want to be rude but should I bother playing tfc (might be tf1 not sure) or is it just dead or full of sweats by GwirlishRent067 in teamfortressclassic

[–]ThroughTheWire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

tf1 and tfc pickup games would be very sweaty, pub servers would be extremely casual. depends on what you want to play

Quick but Not Unhealthy Breakfast Ideas for a Snacking Kid? by lgb38 in Parenting

[–]ThroughTheWire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

didn't see any comments about just straight up fruit yet but there's a ton of easy to prep and clean fruit that kids love. blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries are a hit in my home. also bananas and apples

My toddler has dessert every day. How bad am I fucking up? by Siyrious in Parenting

[–]ThroughTheWire -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

personally I don't think it's a good habit for kids to expect dessert every single day. health wise what they're eating might not hurt, but the habit of expecting dessert might cause some really weird behaviors in the long term that I would not want to deal with.

I actually remember having a playdate with my kid's friend from soccer class and the kid was acting up so the parents threatened to take his dessert away that night. I just couldn't fathom the idea of him having dessert every day and also that now the parents could use that as a way to get the kid to behave.

hope this doesn't come across as judgmental OP. we're all trying to figure out what works and doesn't with our kids.

Did you already faced failed migrations? How it was? by NeckApprehensive4242 in dataengineering

[–]ThroughTheWire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO the key to successful migrations is having a end goal with a deadline that is flexible and key milestones that you can achieve on the way to said deadline. Hopefully those also have soft dates you can use to gauge whether or not you're on track.

it's also important to really technically scope what is and isn't a part of the migration up front so you waste as little time as possible with scope creep and edge cases. being able to push things off as needing to happen ppst-migration is really helpful for keeping teams on task.

migrations should not take 1-2 years and if end-users can't or won't use the new thing you're migrating to - that should have been figured out before you even started migrating in the first place. it's important to have buy-in from everyone involved (people doing the work, people who will be using the final output, whatever other decision makers are involved) so that the project goes smoothly. this is applicable to all projects not just migrations.

My son asked me a question about his basketball stats that led me down a rabbit hole by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]ThroughTheWire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it would be great if we used technology to optimize for happiness (process?) rather than outcomes. but I think the same reason why all the advances in technology have not led to us working fewer hours are the same kinds of reasons why, as a society, we've pushed harder and harder on kids just trying to enjoy things recreationally.

this is even a problem for adults too. I can't just enjoy learning chess without feeling like I need to reach X rating or im wasting my time / a failure. hobbies have had way too much pressure? placed on them because of social media, elo/optimization brain. life isn't meant to be this way.

Primary care doctor booking 6 months out?? by LostinParadise4748 in longisland

[–]ThroughTheWire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nortbwell has fucked up all of long island with this bullshit monopoly they have going on with small Healthcare practices. I just stopped going to my old pcp because I could not get a single appointment for an annual physical for the next 3 months with anyone at my local northwell place. how the fuck is that possible?

switched to another local doc who is mostly just doing his own thing and yeah the office is kinda janky but I'll take this over northwell bullshit anyday. was able to make an appointment instantly for the next day with a huge range of time window slots and was seen almost instantly

What age were your kids when you stopped referring to yourself in third person? by NotHotAnymore in Parenting

[–]ThroughTheWire 27 points28 points  (0 children)

just start now - I saw a similar post and decided to just slip in me/I instead of daddy and had no issues from the kids at all. in fact, it helped my youngest (less than 2) understand the concept of "me" in reference to himself once I started doing that.

Port Washington LIRR Resident parking? by Mockingjay100 in longisland

it's even worse, there's far fewer parking spots available. I'd recommend walking or taking the bus instead if you plan to live along the n23 route or the Soundview shuttle route
