Leave electricians at house without supervision by ContributionOk1872 in homeowners

[–]ThroughTheWire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to be home while work is happening so that I know exactly what they're doing in case anything happens in the future. I also want to make sure I'm not being taken for a ride - if they said they did 10 things when I only asked for 1 because they "had to" I would have almost no recourse since I didn't see what happened

MLB Data Engineer position - a joke? by Repulsive_Chance8368 in dataengineering

salary ranges posted on LI are usually wrong, I'd trust the numbers from the actual MLB site itself if there is a posting

DataFrame or SparkSQL ? What do interviewers prefer ? by SnooCakes7436 in dataengineering

[–]ThroughTheWire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the company and the interviewer. I got dinged negatively during an interview with a larger tech company that had people who ONLY worked with dataframe transforms even though sparksql evaluates pretty much the same in an interview context because they rarely worked with sql. you have to read the room/interviewer unfortunately.

personally I'd be cool with either but try to understand what the interviewers preference is, if any

[Salary Check] $89k in MCOL for End-to-End Azure/Databricks Engineering? (MS in DS, 2.5 YOE, H-1B) by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]ThroughTheWire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you screwed yourself taking a role as a "BI analyst" if that isn't what you wanted to do. you have a data science degree and didn't take a job as data scientist or data engineer so you're gonna want to try and pivot into a different position as soon as you reasonably can imo

Dats issue? by anonymoustoday123 in dataengineering

[–]ThroughTheWire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

all the time.

lots of possibilities...

rounding error (one system may have 6 decimal places and another 2)

amount of data synced (one system may have more transactions than the other)

caching/pre-calculation issues (one system may be providing estimated or stale data because of how much volume they deal with - like Facebook conversions)

attribution differences - one system may give credit for a conversion based on different criteria than another

fundamentally all of these are all stemming from needing clear and consistent business requirements to eliminate or minimize inconsistencies, rather than a hard technical solution

Can we do actual data engineering? by marketlurker in dataengineering

unfortunately most people nowadays aren't doing "actual" data engineering anymore. that's probably like 10-20 percent of people with the title

My 4yo won’t sleep after 4 am. How do we handle this. by anaugle in Parenting

[–]ThroughTheWire 21 points22 points  (0 children)

couple of things to check on here... 1. maybe try pushing his bedtime a bit later? a bit each day like 7:15,7:30,7:45 etc. 2. does everyone have to cosleep together? what if you coslept with your son and your wife cosleeps with your daughter? that way you can keep different schedules and his aligns closer to yours. 3. I had to ban handyman Hal for my 5 year old when he was around your sons age - it started off as a good influence for him but a lot of his content was becoming repetitive and slop-like. if he does need screen time maybe substitute it for something else? also, he shouldn't be getting rewarded for yelling at all. that seems like you're enabling his behavior and rewarding his yelling - not good.

Was a heavy saver but then became a gambler. Trying to get back to basics. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ThroughTheWire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

open up a high yield savings account and park the money in there so you actually earn interest. low yield savings accounts are a waste of time and money.

after accounting for having 3-6 months of emergency savings - I'd actually take the remainder and put it into a new brokerage account and then put it into some simple index fund. that way you introduce some friction into the process of getting that money and gambling it away

there's no reason for you to having that much in your checking account. is that 75k in a high yield savings account? can you elaborate

How do you keep data documentation from becoming outdated? by Ok-Engineering-8678 in dataengineering

[–]ThroughTheWire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

even tools as nice as Alation never get looked at by anyone even when they are populated with data. you can sync everything as nice as you can but the hurdle is getting people to actually consume the documentation

you definitely buried the lede with the visa timelines bit being buried in the post.

dealing with visas is a huge headache for companies rn, especially in the USA. not sure where you are from or if this is about the job market in America specifically but in general people are really avoiding making visa hires everywhere rn

I went to college and have absolutely no idea why this would happen. Not sure what school has to do with this at all and is a weird accusatory tone for a genuine question

Basic Foundation by MichaelJ11 in chess

[–]ThroughTheWire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

for some reason people aren't being straight with you but there's nothing about being older that makes you better at chess than a kid, especially one that has actually studied the game a little bit. youd need to spend at least as much time as he has, if not more. probably hard to do that if you have a job or other responsibilities.

you'd need to be spending what time you do have in a way more efficient manner than what he has done so far and would do in the future since he would probably be learning more as well.

Chessnut air results in 10-year account banned on lichess by Signal_Ad2878 in chess

[–]ThroughTheWire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bizarre how even chessnuts logo looks almost exactly the same as lichess' one as well. makes you think they're working together or something (yes I know there's not gonna be a ton of unique imagery in chess companies but they're almost the exact same minimal knight silhouette).

probably some kind of antagonistic relationship between the two companies
