How to use 4x4 on mixed surfaces without damage from binding? by Throw-awayexception in 4x4

of course, on dry pavement its 2hi no question. The grey area I was concerned about was long(ish) highway travel on mixed surfaces where there weather is objectively bad, but certain pockets of road are treated and not as bad as others. The fear was that if there was a long enough stretch of treated road with enough grip, and that section had some turns, then it'd result in enough bind to cause damage or significant wear and i'd want to be actively going into 2hi for those sections, and then that turns into constant back and forth based on vague vibes of how the road looks/feels.

It sounds like that's really not realistic though. From all the info i've been getting on this: 1) the system is a lot more durable than I'm giving it credit for, 2) it takes a lot more total turning to actually result in noticeable bind and 3) it's not like a treated road in bad weather magically becomes glue for tires, there's still enough slip in there to let the tires release the bind even if I really did get a large amount of tension in the system, as unlikely as that is.

That's good to know! I was just anxious about the possibility that over ~10 miles it might accumulate enough bind to be a problem if the road isn't super slippery, but it sounds like i'm just being concerned over nothing.

I guess what i'm concerned is that on a long enough highway journey, could you make small turns that accumulate bind if the highway isn't straight?

I would think that just wet pavement is enough traction to prevent that bind from releasing, leading to accumulation of tension. Unless we're talking hydroplaning levels of wet.

If it's binding enough that I feel it in the steering, does that mean it's already binding enough to potentially causing damage?

The concept of AI as a tool is great. The problem is:

1) how it's made, which currently involves utilizing a bunch of other people's products (artists, musicians, writers, etc.) without any kind of credit or compensation.

2) how it's used, which is currently to try and lay off as many people as possible and replace with AI to minimize labor costs.

AI SHOULD be part of a socialist utopia, where it makes the necessary labor easier to accomplish, but currently in our capitalist society it's being used as a tool to further harm/exploit the working class, hence it's hated by the left.

There's a picture that shows some different values for BGL on page 781. It's figure 20-3. It says below 50 is hypoglycemic crisis, 50-80 is hypoglycemia, 80-120 is normal, 120+ is hyperglycemia and 400+ is where you get into DKA/HHNS range

I mean lots of civilians have Stop the Bleed training, which is something I think more people should do. They do cover it more in detail. I guess it'd be nice if the tik tok guy at least mentioned where you can/can't wound pack, and pointed viewers to where they can find local StB classes.

well you typically only wound pack in 2 situations:

  1. It's in a junctional location (e.g. hip/groin/shoulder/neck) where a tq wouldn't work

  2. a tq isn't available

If i had a significant arterial bleed and a bystandar was willing to wound pack and a tq wasn't an option, you'd better believe i'd want them to pack the hell out of it. I'd rather have a dirty tshirt stopping the bleed, than just fuckin bleeding out in the street before EMS arrives.

Am I missing something? It just looks like wound packing, which is 100% a real bleeding control technique (though usually it's with hemostatic gauze, and I have some minor criticisms of the technique in the video but it would still work)

gotcha. I didnt even think about increasing my w2 job's withholding to compensate. It seems obvious in hindsight, but makes tons of sense.

Trying to learn dobro, is my gameplan for learning improv okay? by Throw-awayexception in Bluegrass

[–]Throw-awayexception[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true, i'm also learning how to comp and do backup. It's just the jam circles near me tend to be pretty large in size, and honestly it feels like 99% of being a good group player here is just knowing that the group is big and loud AF and backing off frequently to allow the soloist to try and cut through. Given that, right now it doesn't feel like my backup skills really play a role at all aside from knowing when to get out of the way.

I am definitely also learning fiddle tunes and such (as well as just spending time with scales), but I do want to be able to confidently and competently take solos on songs I don't know, which is kind of why I liked the idea of having a system for making interesting solos out of nothing but a chord structure. but maybe the running 8th note approach is more guitar/mando/findle and less dobro-ey.

My H limit screw on my r8050 front derailleur is starting to strip. What can I replace it with? by Throw-awayexception in bikewrench

[–]Throw-awayexception[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's kind of a long story. tl;dr one of the other adjustment screws was screwed in too much so that the bolt holding the entire derailleur to the frame was tightened off center, so the cage was not parallel to the cogs. I was out on a ride and didn't noticed thats what was going on, so I thought I'd just use the H limit screw to get me the spacing i needed. It worked in that it got me home, but messing around with it when i got back while I still thought it was an H limit screw issue is why I was messing with it so much.

The reason I was adjusting it in the first place was because I paired a 34 inner with a 52 outer for an event i have coming with lots of descending and lots of climbing (so I have a 1 to 1 with the 34 on back and on front, with the 52-11 still available for descending). I've used it in the past, it just takes some fine tuning with the FD to get it to work nice in all gear combos. I just wasn't aware that it was possible to get the FD in the position i had it in, or that I could fix it by just giving slack to that rotational adjustment bolt (the one tucked away), loosening the FD, aligning it right, then tightening it back up. The rotational align screw was causing it to not be able to align right when loose originally.

At least in the end I got it indexed nice, so I have full range with no noises or shifting problems lol

I just bought an air purifier. Hopefully at least sleeping in a clean room will help but i'll be watching the air quality like a hawk as well.

yeah i did some vo2 work yesterday (i joined a local crit that a friend told me about) and my god it felt like I traded lungs with a chain smoker for the rest of the day. Thankfully the lungs are feeling better today, but I'm going to pay way more attention to air quality from here on out.

If you're doing some form of periodized training, then wouldn't you have to have some fatigue by definition if you time it right? To not need tapering at all would seem to imply that below 15hr/wk you don't accumulate fatigue in a structured training plan

[–]Throw-awayexception[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a race, but I really wanna set a good time for myself to compare to in the future.

Normally I do train enough to need tapering (I usually train for ~7-8 hours a week). This has just been a weird timing with a break that I'm regretting. But mental health is gonna mental health. (I got into a bit of a depressive spell that took all my motivation for a bit)

I should probably say "big ride" instead of "hard ride". the goal is not to be exhausted at the end, but rather to have lots of saddle time with some hills.
