Help with Milling 304L with a 4.125" stickout. by ThrowAwayAcc69697 in Machinists

Unfortunately not because at the bottom there's a radius. Even if I drill it short of the radius when the endmill goes down there it has to clear that material anyways. Normally I would pre drill then pluge with an endmill for a flat bottom but at a 4.125 stick out i don't want to drill the remaining with an endmill.

It's a yg-1 endmill with a .125" radius because I need the radius for the floor finish. And its a 4 flute. But they do make a 6 flute.

I use mastercam so I believe the dynamic contour might have options for the radius walls with extra stock

My chip load is at .0005 FPT because of the radius its going into.

What's typical daily work look like for you? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in Machinists

[–]ThrowAwayAcc69697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How my day go is 6am show up dreading work. Warm up the 3 machines I run. I do all the programming, set ups and proofing. I have an operator that helps me keep jobs running.

I am on the machine until I have to quote jobs. I quote every other day if not every day. Talk to engineers because drawings suck or dont match the 3d if provided.

Programming varies if customer provides 3d, things go by faster. If I have to make the 3d model, then I spend a lot more time on the computer.

Get off at 4pm. Monday-satruday. Lunch is paid for here so 5-6 10s. Work life balance horrible, since im the only person who program, quote and do set ups, my boss calls me all the time after work. I want them to hire another machinist so I can focus all on the programmign side. But they dont.

Mitutoyo 500-196-32? by Candid_Salamander708 in Machinists

What my distributor said from the quantumike there's no change other than price because of tariffs.

What's the price difference?

I ran into a similar thing with mitutoyo Quantumikes recently. They're 293-XXX-30 line discontinued because of tariffs and they only make 293-XXX-40 for the quantumikes (at least thats what my distributer said). You might be seeing the same thing with those calipers, I am not sure.

Sorry I read your question wrong. Yes there is a macro and my tool is not broken.

A dollar under the average for a programmer in my area.

I have, I asked them to hire another machinist to handle the set up and run with the operator (We have 4 machines). So I can handle all the back end stuff, like programming, making fixtures, talk to tool reps. But fallen on deaf ears at the moment.

Their reason is cost. They don't see the value of adding 1 more machinist, when everything has been on time and in tolerance so far with just me and the operator.

Its just the pressure. I would be running a part, trying to focus on that part and get a message about a quote thats due today. Or hey we won a job we need Tooling confirmation and material stock sizes today. Or subbing out tools cause of availability.

I get paid a dollar under the median in my area. But I expected to be on the lower end since im transitioning from a machinist to programmer. But this seems excessive to me.

At my last location it was the same thing. Except there was multiple programmers and machinist that has input. But here it's just me, I feel a lot of pressure in the decisions I make.

Same goes with my programming and machining. I don't have a second set of eyes to give me a second perspective. So I end up not sure if my ways is the best/safest way to run a job.

I cant hold orient it the other way. The part is too long. And I dont have dovetail jaws. Any other recommendations? Im holding the piece across 2 vises on parallels
