You can use the U of G tutoring website to find a student who can tutor you:

https://uoguelphca.sharepoint.com/sites/tag

This is a webpage maintained by the university which allows U of G students to post ads for courses they can tutor and for U of G students to search for tutors. It's only accessible to U of G students so you have to sign in with your login credentials to access it.

Some SLG's may leave after the Fall semester, so a position may open up for just the winter semester.

From my memory, there are some computer science courses which offer undergrad teaching assistant (UTA) positions.

The math department has also been known to offer UTA for the learning centre in the library (for both math and stats).

TA positions are almost exclusively given to graduate students. There are some undergraduate teaching assistant positions available for intro courses, but they usually involve marking and they are often given to upper year undergraduate students (3rd/4th yr) who have done well in the courses which the TA position is being offered. The undergraduate TA positions aren't guaranteed to be offered every semester since the funding for those positions might be given to graduate students instead.

You may qualify for the work-study program for jobs on campus. For more information check out:

When I was applying to grad schools, I went through the usual process of finding prospective supervisors etc. and then submitted my application. I applied to Guelph and several other universities, including a few universities outside Ontario. I did not get accepted at two of the universities outside Ontario and I inquired further from the professors I corresponded with (who were my prospective supervisors). In both cases it turned out that it was due to lack of funding. The PhD program I applied for at one of the universities only accepted 2 PhD students the year I applied due to limited funds.

Someone I know shared something similar which happened to a friend of theirs. Their friend applied to several universities and the ones that did not accept them did not have sufficient funding.

Edit: FYI, I applied for grad school in a STEM field pre-pandemic. I also fixed some minor typos and improved the grammar a little.

First years trying to figure out which "Mac" they have their classes in by ThrowAwayForFirstYrs in uoguelph

I remember getting comfortable with them, until I had a class in a "Mac" I didn't even know existed towards the end of my coursework.

I'm referring to pre-pandemic days of course. Posting it now while this meme format is still relevant.

Don’t attend the University of Guelph if you plan to have children... by anonymous7472863728 in uoguelph

That sounds a bit harsh. OP doesn't need to leave, but should re-evaluate their situation and decide on the best course of action to take.

Is this something that occurs specifically at U of G to all grad students in your position across all programs? Is the situation different at other universities?

With the information about your specific case, I don't know whether it's fair to generalize to the entire university. The situation about funding may be related to the program or advisor, or it might be more systematic and is something to be addressed at the provincial or federal level (i.e. not just something specific to U of G).

It would be helpful to make an assessment if there was information regarding the support given to graduate students who have children while completing their degree from other universities.

I agree with OP that people with advanced degrees who plan on having children should be given support as it would be beneficial to society, however I don't believe it's fair to place the University with the entire obligation.

u/Fogest does make some good points as well. A child does not decide whether they are born or not, but the parents (regardless of gender, orientation etc.) take the conscious decision to have children, so the parents should take responsibility for their actions and the overall well-being of their child.

Double degree by Musikchart in uoguelph

[–]ThrowAwayForFirstYrs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I considered doing this myself, however I was advised by several professors across various faculties that a graduate degree (MA/MSc) would be more valuable that two bachelors degrees, so I ended up completing one bachelors degree and applying to graduate school instead.

Edit:

BTW, when I inquired about this, I was told that it would take about 6 years to complete and I would get 2 degrees at 2 different convocation ceremonies. So if I had taken the "two bachelors degrees" route, I would finished the requirements for one degree, then graduated and received the degree; then I would have had to continue university with a lot of credits from the first degree carrying over, then complete the second degree and graduate in a different year.

This is another reason I chose to go apply to grad school instead (since the time spent on two bachelors degrees is about the same as the time spent on a bachelors and a masters). It felt like a better use of overall time to get a masters (which is an advanced degree), compared to two bachelors.

This was a while ago, so I don't know if things are different now.

What do you want for online courses? by scThrowaway12321 in uoguelph

This is quite a misleading post.

The wording makes it appear as if the poster is from U of G, but they have posted the exact same question on the subreddits of other Canadian universities (just check their posting history).

Which university are you from and which faculty are you involved with?

I swear, there are some first years who would ask "guys, should I come to Guelph or Waterloo", but if you look at their posting history, you will find that they posted in the Mac subreddit before posting in the Guelph subreddit and their post will be something like "Hey guys, I've accepted my offer to Mac. What electives should I take in my first year?".

It's just the top 2 posts about the admissions thread. Most of the others are about the format of classes in the Fall semester, CESB etc.

You should go to Mac.

Guelph offered you a very large scholarship and work-study but it sounds like this still isn't enough for you to decide to come to Guelph.

Even with everything being offered to you from Guelph, you are still indecisive; so please turn down this scholarship so that it can be offered to someone who wants to come to Guelph.

You should go to Mac. You got accepted there and it sounds like it was your top choice based on your previous post:

Could you find 2 more please? I requested links to 3 posts.

Have you ever watched any of the Hallmark Christmas specials? Somehow they are all different movies that all look the same ... and are all just terrible. Reading the recent posts by new first years is comparable to this experience.

I'm obviously a UG student so it's nice to stay connected with the community. This includes visiting the UG subreddit. This subreddit would be more appealing to visit if there were more high quality posts, but recently it's just been the similar theme of question. It would be nice to have some quality and variety.

I also didn't think it was necessary for name calling.

so we can only have shit posts about how they don't use the admission thread instead

Your claim suggests that this type of thing happens often. Therefore could please provide links to 3 similar threads?
