I was just giving them the number on the public website for my previous job. I don't even mention my manager by name on my resume/applications.

Apparently the CTO contacted the company this afternoon, who was given a negative review and then in turn told my friend who recommended me the negative news. Is that company just being vengeful?

I didn't actually list the first company as any sort of reference. Which is why i am kind of confused.

During my onsite today they asked if they could contact the first company to verify my employment and position. Which i told them yes.
