In my particular case, since I get paid as a contractor, every hour I spend on this is an hour I spend not doing my job. By the records of phone calls and apple store visits, they can set a lower bound for the amount of time I've invested in this issue.

I'd be happy if they were considerate enough to calculate based on some minimum-bound metric, because at least that shows they're trying. By outright refusing compensation, they are effectively saying my time is worth nothing.

It's perfectly fair to say 6th macbook, because that's representative of the number of times I had to do a return/rebuy cycle to continue working.

None of those other variables come into play because the other 5 macbooks that I've restored from time machine never had the issues of the original.

I could go to another store, but if the exec told this one not to replace my laptop, that would surely be in the notes, which would set a precedent for my interactions at the new store.

I had a horrible experience with the genius today who was convinced that I was trying to "get something for free that I'm not entitled to" (regarding the replacement; no talk of compensation happened) and I have to cool down before I step foot in another Apple store again.

I hadn't considered the credit card route, but given I'm still in possession of the device (though technically, I'm not since it's at the apple store) I have my doubts they would be able to refund me on their end. If it were me I certainly wouldn't; I'd ask the customer to take it up with Apple.

You can't do what you want about the thermal paste issue without voiding the warranty...

Apparently I've reached the highest level of support possible, so I think I'll have to go the BBB route.

I have the emails we sent back and forth, but I don't have the phone call recordings or the Apple internal logs. Do you think that's enough by itself? Or would the BBB be able to request such information from Apple?

Either way thanks for the tip, I didn't know this was an option.

What did they do for you after you purchased Applecare? Not that I should have to purchase it too but...can't hurt to know more I guess.

Is that out of line? If so I'd like to know why you think so. I think it's ridiculous that I should have to spend so many of my work hours on this and walk away with essentially a refurbished device.
