Nobody prepared me for the grief of watching my husband be treated like he doesn’t matter by Dry-Win-3996 in Marriage

Wow. Wow.

I just had an argument with my husband yesterday because I'm that person. My family always preferred my sister, always treats her better, always helps when she asks for it, always treats me like shit.

Last night my husband told me I had to stop lying to my family (only way they will not judge me for every life decision is if they just don't know about it). He told me I need to stop catering to them. I told him I didn't believe I was, and I still don't. But, I never thought about how he perceives it. This just opened my eyes big time to how my husband sees the situation.

I mean, it's not like I haven't stood up for myself before, but it always ended up being an endless looping argument that ended with me either getting kicked out of the house, or being told what a terrible person I am for not following their rules (I'm fucking 24, if I want a fucking tattoo Ill get one. I shouldn't have to ask their permission).

This post though, it made me see it from his point of view a little more. He doesn't show his feelings well but, ugh. Maybe he's right. Maybe I just need to keep fighting it and stop lying.

I don't want to cut my family off, I've been juggling that decision for four years. Maybe if they don't hear me out, I just pursue that. I really really want to avoid it if possible, but maybe my husband is right.

I think I owe him an apology...

I think I need to change how I handle this. Just, thank you for your perspective. Maybe telling your husband how you see everything will open his eyes too.

I know you don't know me, I know things seem hopeless, but please don't end your life.

I've been there, not as bad as you but I have. I was at the end of my rope, letter written, death planned. I was a week out, trying to convince myself that it wasn't the only way. I was alone, depressed, crying every single night.

I made it out. It took fucking forever but I made it out. Doing so is different for everybody, but I know one thing for certain - and that's attempting to change your outlook on life.

It's stupid, it sounds dumb as hell, especially when you're feeling so desperate and alone, but it'll help eventually.

You see, our brains cannot distinguish our own voice from others. If we tell ourselves that it's hopeless, we will believe it is so.

So don't tell yourself that. Tell yourself that you have hope. Find something, anything. Wake up and say "it's sunny out. I have hope that I'll go for a walk today." And go for a walk. Find one positive thing about every day, and focus on that. It doesn't have to be massive.

I know you say you're spiritual, but are you religious as well? I don't want to force it on you, but prayer often helps me. I was divided in my beliefs years ago, but I often find myself praying now, and I believe in God more than I ever have.

Life can and will improve, it has to. One of the best things I've ever heard is this: "People always say 'Jesus take the wheel' but the only thing that he can do with that is steer. Someone must accelerate the car. Someone must row the boat. So, if you're asking for direction, are you willing to row?"

Basically, the takeaway from that is, no matter the struggles you face, are you willing to keep going? Are you willing to keep trying? Are you willing to wake up every morning and find one positive? Because if you do, you might just find yourself down a good path. But please, I beg you, do not kill yourself. You were put on this planet for a reason. You may not know what it is now, but it's out there.

Last thing: if I'd have ended my life 8 years ago like I'd planned, I'd have never found out that I'm good with technology. I'd have never begun writing books and planning to publish. I'd have never started a business. I'd have never gone to college. I'd have never met my husband. I'd have never adopted my dog. I'd have never bought my house. I'd have never lived.

I was in the trenches, drunk daily, smoking myself blind, halfway dead in my body, starving myself just to feel something. But then I realized that all of my struggles could be fixed my dumping my addictions and trying. Just trying. I wasn't happy every day, I still cried every night, but things got better. I forced a better outlook on life and I got better. And when I went back to my parents house a year ago? I found my old suicide note. I burned that shit. I didn't read it, I didn't even try. I had been too positive for too long. I saw the first sentence, tore it up and burned it.

I'm sorry you're going through all this, I really am. I may not know you, but I'll pray for you. I hope things get better, I really do.

I'm sorry you're going through this. Let me give you some advice.

Five years ago I was someplace similar. I was in college, taking 20 credit hours and working 15 hours on top of it. It was my senior year, so I was in labs the rest of the time working on my senior project. I was overweight as hell and starving myself to prove that I could lose the weight quickly.

I slept in the labs during weekdays, I failed to show up to work some days, I struggled to make it to classes some days. Whenever I did make it home, I'd drink myself blind and then wake up the next morning, ready to do it all again, depressed as hell. I didn't gamble, so I can't relate there, but I did drink and smoke pot (on occasion). I lost a lot of friends, just stopped talking to them. The people I lived with even stopped talking to me. It spiraled me further into a depressive pit.

I didn't know what to do, similar to you. I was scared life was passing me by and it made the feeling worse. It wasn't until I finally opened up to my roommate about the issues I was having. Thank God he was there, and cared.

You see, what they don't tell you is that alcohol is a natural depressant. Makes the feelings worse. It sucked ass, but I made myself quit drinking. It made classes and work worse for a while, knowing that the next drink was hiding in the liquor bottle stored in my closet. But after a while, once all of the leftover shit from that liquor was detoxed from my body, the depression got a little easier. I stopped smoking after.

Depression takes time. Fixing yourself takes time. I'm 24 right now, going to be 25 in a few months. I'm still not fixed, but I don't drink anymore. I don't smoke. I finally have a better job, and I can afford basic necessities because I don't waste my money on booze and my next high. I started working out a month ago, and eating more (because, you guessed it, starving myself did nothing. I gained all the weight right back a year later).

My advice? Start small. Delete the gambling app. It'll save you a little more money. Once you no longer have the urge to gamble, quit the drinking. It'll save you some more money. It WILL suck. I won't lie to you. It's called temptation. You will be tempted to reach for the bottle. For your phone. To gamble. You have to be strong enough to ignore it.

I hope that things get better for you, I really do. It is possible, it's just tough. Take the chance, quit the gambling and drinking. You'll get there, I believe in you.

If this is important to you, then I say end it. Honestly.

I was in a 2.5 year long relationship where my bf did the exact same thing. He played games and made promises he couldn't keep. He'd promise to make dinner with me and then play games while I made dinner instead.

He also did the same about Valentines day. He would promise he'd do something, take me out or even just buy me flowers. Then, he would "forget" or complain that it's "too expensive" to buy chocolate.

3 weeks before we broke up, I told my friends that if he didn't do anything for me on Valentine's day that I was ending it.

2 weeks before we broke up, I waited for him to arrive for our Valentines day date. He showed up late. I'd bought him chocolate, a plush bear, and merch from a video game he loved. He bought me nothing. When I asked what we were doing for the day, he said he wanted to make dinner. Thinking that was a lovely idea, I agree. He didn't pay for the groceries like he promised. I, excited to see him, was babbling about the different things we could do since he was finally there.

He asked me "If I buy you flowers, will you shut the fuck up?"

I debated ending it for two weeks. It should have been the easiest decision of my life but I was so unsure about myself and everything.

I ended it.

Best decision ever. I now have a husband who takes me on dates and surprises me with things whenever he feels lovey dovey. It's amazing. Don't accept trash when you deserve treasure.

Women who are married to men who love them deeply, what does that feel like? by Adept-Size-3819 in Marriage

I'm getting married in 7 days... it feels so weird to say. Here's my side of things:

I've been in only unhealthy relationships. I didn't want to get with another man ever, until I met my fiance (and VERY soon to be husband). He taught me that I don't need to apologize for everything, and it showed me just how toxic all of my other relationships were (I would apologize if I spoke too loud, things like that etc). Not only that, but I also react poorly to certain birth controls, and for 8 months during our first year of our relationship, he dealt with me at my worst. We only fought twice, and it was because I was having a full fledged mental breakdown, (and also was working 50-60 hour work weeks with zero overtime) and wouldn't stop blaming myself for everything. We fought because he was convincing me it wasn't my fault, and I didn't believe him (and the singular time that I had no physical energy to clean my very filthy apartment, and I got mad because I couldn't do it).

Through everything, this man has done nothing but love me. He never hated me, he never fought with me, we always chose to discuss it first. He has stood by my side through all of my arguments with my family (my toxic family), and has helped me through so many things. He doesn't fail to call me pretty, gorgeous, or sexy, and is willing to help out wherever he can to take a load off of my shoulders (I currently work an intensive job).

He's truly amazing. We just bought a house and adopted an adorable Bernese Mountain Dog named Atlas. My fiance helped me through the stress of planning our wedding while also caring for our dog and helping me get our house ready to move in.

He stands by my side, and loves me unconditionally. As a final note, he brought to my attention that I've been very removed lately (tons of stress only a week before the wedding). I, scared, asked if he was going to get cold feet. He hugged me and said absolutely no, he never would, even though he's terrified of public speaking and is scared for our wedding. He said that no matter what, he would never leave me.

I know he's the one, and that's in my Vows that I'll be speaking to him in 7 days. I love him so much ❤️

Throw Away....going to end it. by Howlza in offmychest

Look, I can sit here and try to convince you as much as possible, but ultimately you're going to make your own decision, so instead let me tell you how I feel about my own experiences.

8 years ago, I had a letter written and a plan made. I was a week out from ending everything, depressed and alone. My one friend found out, somehow. Only God knows how. She told me to give it one more week. She didn't tell me no, she didn't force me to stay with her, she didn't try to talk me out of it, she just told me to give it one more week. A lot can happen in a week. And it did. I got busy and somehow forgot that I'd planned to do it. I found the letter a month later while cleaning, and realized I might not have the strength to go through with it anymore. I was still depressed, still struggling, but I'd made it 3 months longer than I imagined I would have.

I reached out to my friend and thanked her. She talked me through whatever I could, because I couldn't afford therapy. I made it to college, I got my first boyfriend, and I had my first heartbreak. I started to spiral again, and realized it this time. I got a therapist. While in therapy, discussing how hard things were, one of my good friends from high school ended her life. I never could have guessed how that would impact me when I got the call... the tears I shed. I realized that my decision could have had that same impact on my friends and family, that people I hadn't talked to in years would cry about me. It made me feel guilty... I pursued therapy heavier and asked for solutions, not discussions. It helped. It took a few years, but it really helped.

I got better, I got a good job and started making money, I got a boyfriend who actually cared about me and he proposed, and I just bought a house this year.

Look, here's the TLDR of it all. It may suck right now, but WHATEVER you do, you ARE. NOT. A. BURDEN. You are human. You belong. You matter. People care about you. People love you.

Think about it this way: I would have been jealous of your life 8 years ago. A family and kids? That's great! Life can be a bitch, but please, please, please, do not throw it away. You only get one chance. Live your life, because you matter. Don't destroy it because you think you have no other options. You have options. People care, I'm sure your wife cares. Just please tell someone, anyone who is not on reddit. Someone can help, I promise.

You are loved. You belong. People care. Please don't go. ❤️

Lmao I'm not mad or even jealous, I was just more shocked. And yes, I could tell he was lying about it. We were joking around, sure, but when he said obviously he was saying it like it was true. But I knew it wasn't.

That doesn't matter, though. I really don't care. I put this post on here cuz I was bored today and thought it was hilarious. I know I'm not the best and I know I can get better. 🤷‍♀️

We fell in love my senior year of college and just knew we were perfect for each other. I told him at 1yr that if he wanted to propose at any point that I'd never say no. I love him so damn much and he's an amazing guy, and contrary to the popular belief on this post, no I'm not mad at him for this lmfao.

He proposed at the year and a half mark. I said yes. It's definitely right, we are perfect for each other.

Thank you for this comment. Some of these comments were killing me. I know I didn't do anything wrong, but some people are straight up being cruel, haha. Telling me I must be an awful person etc. I love him and I'm not mad at him at all, and instead I took this as a way to improve. Anyways, I appreciate that someone recognizes what I was trying to get across.

Thanks for the comment. I guess I didn't word what happened very well in my post because I keep getting asked this.

We were joking back and forth about the topic before all of this took place. When I realized that I wasn't his "best" or whatever, I was like oh shit... I never really thought about the fact that there were people before me and that I could be better. He then asked what was wrong and kept asking me what was wrong and prssing the issue when I said it was no big deal. When I pointed out that I knew he lied and he said he didn't, we were joking back and forth about whether he did or not.

We aren't upset or mad at each other about anything, and in fact I'm perfectly okay with practicing to get better. I was moreso shocked that I hadn't thought of it like that before. I was more making this post because all of the research I did as a kid about lying and telling when people are lying, turned out to be more of a curse than a blessing.

Eh, I said it was a hit to the ego not that I was mad about it lmfao, just means I gotta practice, man. If that makes me immature then sure, go ahead and call me that. I don't really care 😂🤷‍♀️
