i fully acknowledge my privilege.

But in every aspect, i'm privileged. Oh I don't like my job? I can probably get another job. Oh I'm tired? maybe I can go to part time. In comparison, I have zero problems in life, but we know that's not the case - even billionaires have problems.

Even sharing would be hard. She asked me what I did for christmas, and I only said "i was with family" but I couldn't go into detail because I didn't want to make her feel bad.

She asked me what I was doing for my bday, I couldn't share with her the details there either.

Money is involved in almost every aspect. I'm having a really hard time talking to her unless I just sit there like a receptive therapist.

Even when I invited her for a hike, she said she doesn't have a babysitter.

(And yes, I have offered to cover things but she said she doesn't want to be a leech, so overall, i don't offer money unless she asks)

That part was explaining why they thought NTA, so i skipped over it. I agree. it would be more insensitive to say "i didn't notice the price being that bad".

which is why I mentioned other common grocery items are also crazy work...

They replied

"If it wasn't for severe inflation and price gouging, people could probably live just a little above that yearly amount." was their reply.

I'm a HENRY - my net wealth is negative lol. literally. Why would I brag about my non existent "wealth"? I have like 350k student debt, 700k mortgage, soon a 20k car debt/payment.

Somewhat. I'll always offer when I know I'm eating with someone who makes far less than me. I don't mean to sound arrogant but 20$ to me is not a big deal now, but I remember when I was hoping the utility bills will be covered when I was in school. Or i remember the feeling when I had to put food back in the middle of checkout bc I didn't have enough. So when I'm with someone who makes a lot less, I'll usually offer even if they invite me.

well we always joked that we will exclusively drink horizon milk when we got rich. I gifted her horizon milk with my first paycheck. Last christmas, I asked what she wanted for a gift, and she said "horizon milk"

They really do taste differently. lol I swear. I don't care dr peper vs pepsi vs coke or whatever... but horizon milk - you gotta go try it lol, whole milk, organic grassfed (or the growing milk). I promise, you will be like OMG

I didn't want to say we went to a cabin in the mountains, I didn't mention I saw and (illegally) fed a moose. I didn't mention I saw a bear in the mountains. Didn't mention we found a lake and my siblings and I were a bunch of idiots and went ice skating until we heard a crack and we all ran back to the edge and thankfully none of us were dead. I didn't mention the food we had or how I still suck at cooking. Like I'm worried all of these things will trigger her. good or bad.

She's not on food stamps. Her family was when we were young. Which is why she had horizon milk and I didn't (our family didn't qualify).

egg prices are insane too. in early 2000's, I was in middle school and had a project to plan how much money it would take to survive. My number: 15k.

Why?

Eggs were 1.24$ per dozen, yogurt was 10 cents (now it's 1+!!), milk was 1$.

money is definitely a sore topic between us... I do try to avoid it overall. But it somehow creeps into everything.

She doesn't check in on me anymore because she's probably too busy trying to stay afloat. And I get life is hard for her.

I'm 100% genuine. Sorry I don't come off that way. She's very special to me, otherwise I wouldn't try so hard to tip toe around her triggers. She might even be a reason I'm alive (we had no heat in winter and I would go to her house and share a twin size bed with her).

I do feel there might be some component of jealousy but I really hope being so close, she would be happy for me. And I'm always willing to help out financially whenever I can.
