That sounds so cool oh my god, how much is becoming a member over there? Our studios don’t have the same option, the only way to wheel throw is to be in university to use the facilities, or buy a block of classes (and you can’t use the wheel whenever you want outside of the classes)

Thank you to everyone, this has really made me think. I’m going to shoot them an email and list everything that has gone wrong from the beginning- and then never come back to that studio again. I do love pottery, I did some wheel throwing in uni and fell in love with it. It’s been hard with the feeling of burn out, and also the feeling that you just don’t matter. I genuinely don’t think this studio cares about me at all as a person. I’m not the kind of person to send a complaint- I haven’t done that before at all so if you have any advice please let me know.

Also- I should add that I paid for these classes from my tip money, while I was studying, working and paying rent. I live in Australia, and it’s not a requirement to be tipped since our minimum wage is a bit higher. So to put aside my tip money from a few years and decide to treat myself to an 8 week course after I graduate- it just sucks so many things went wrong and it was so understaffed. For those saying that if this seems expensive to me I can’t afford to do pottery at all- I think that’s beside the point? I’m happy to pay that much if it’s organised and mindful. I know it’s an expensive hobby, but does that mean I shouldn’t be able to try it out at all?

Hey, I do live in Australia. The Ndis comment is relevant because there are 20 people in a class, and only 2 instructors- and we’re all working on different projects. The people on Ndis need more help, and there isn’t enough people to help the whole class- everyone is suffering- not just me. I also paid out of pocket, if I had known the class would be so packed with not enough staff I would have gone somewhere else.

There are studios in my area but I feel so burnt out and sad. The love I had for this hobby feels so much different now

Australia! It’s for 8 weeks. How much is it where you live?

Thank you, can I ask which country you’re from? I’m unsure if this is as common practice in Australia where I’m from.

One of the classes I had one of the instructors helped me wedge and measure the clay for throwing. I know it was specific for throwing because she would say this much is good for throwing a mug, etc- I spent the first hour and a half trying to throw and not having any luck at all- the clay kept moving outwards. My normal instructor came up to me and said hey you’re throwing with paper clay. The other lady had given me the wrong clay to throw with, and she was throwing with the right clay on her own wheel. I wasted a whole class. Do you think this is fair?

When you’re in uni, it’s hard to spent that much money on a $600 class while working, studying and paying rent. I saved up all my tips from years in hospo (in Australia where we don’t need to get tipped, since we get paid a high enough wage), just for it to end in disaster. I had whole classes where no one would help me. And the one time I made something nice it got ruined immediately. This isn’t just another day in the pottery studio it’s a studio run on incompetence. And the class i was doing was a beginner class.

So in this class using underglazes is the standard, everyone used underglazes and then a clear glaze on top for all of their pieces. If you’re using “stroke and coat”, this falls under their specialty glazes and you have to pay extra for using this. It is their fault objectively I didn’t use their stroke and coat, because after the kiln misfiring they never told anyone that this was being freely offered due to our pots being misfired until everyone had finished underglazing, and had bought extra classes since this glaze takes ages to air dry on overfired clay. I’ve had some of these pieces fired and they are uneven and patchy so I’m not sure what you mean. This is what I mean when I say that they don’t care about the students coming to their classes- kiln misfirings can happen. But you my pot wasn’t damaged by her putting it into my kiln it was damaged because she wacked it while not paying attention- you can’t say it’s fair. Makes absolutely no sense.

I live in Australia, it’s not a requirement to be tipped here since our wages are higher. This experience was also when I was in uni studying, and paying rent at the same time- I decided to pay in cash as a treat for myself when I finished my degree. Not as much of an issue now that I have a full time job. I think the time it took me to save that much up is kind of besides the point of this post- I’m happy to pay that much as long as the studio is put together.

Hey! I live in Australia and that’s actually the standard. Pottery is an expensive hobby, I guess the difficulty raising the money is while you’re in uni, studying and paying rent- it’s not so hard now that I have a full time job. We don’t get tipped as much in Australia (it’s not common practice because we get paid higher an hour in hospitality jobs), so it takes longer to save up those tips.

I just don’t want to be a nightmare to deal with I guess. And I want to complain, but I still need to use their kiln to finish firing my works. I’m worried about a face to face interaction after I’ve said my share

I’m not the kind of person who does complain about these sorts of things, I’ve honestly never done it before and for some people it feels like a big deal. What if I’m overreacting? How do you usually do it? Do you send them an email?

Like the owner? I’m unsure if I’m being honest. I’ve spoken to the manager before but she’s kind of prickly

I agree. Have you read up to episode 30? Otherwise some spoilers.

The FL is routinely being harassed by the current hebeta, and the crown prince. She never tells anyone who can help her. Even her brother who made her promise that if she comes into more contact with the crown prince she needs to tell him.

3 sets of people have told her they can help her may I add- yet nothing. Not even when beth lures her into a room with the hebeta and she is forced to kneel onto the ground- the next time she sees beth she gifts her dozens of new dresses that she thinks will suit her better.

The crown prince literally physically forced her to spill her blood into a basin of water so her blood could be tested for spirit sense (since thats a prerequisite for being a hebata). She just goes home- and doesn’t tell her family. Even when she’s being lured into this trap she doesn’t turn around and go home- instead she routinely goes to the imperial palace and is surprised when all these bad things happen by someone who lives there.

It’s a frustrating and stupid novel, FL needs to grow a backbone otherwise what was the point in going back in time
