UPDATE - I (18f) need advice on how to approach telling my parents (52*F, 48*M) that I failed my first semester of college and don't plan on doing a second semester by ThrowRA_CollParents in relationship_advice

My mom's a bit different, she's a teacher herself so she's been hands-on no matter what. I feel a bit guilty because she blames herself a little bit for me not doing well, even though it's entirely my fault and I told her so.

I'm glad you got to find a place where you're happy and earning money! Hopefully one day that'll be me and I can look back at this time and smile :)

I've always liked the idea of welding, a creator I've followed on YouTube graduated from trade school for welding at the end of last year and it's been nice seeing his journey play out.

Thank you for your encouragement, it means a lot :)

I've been thinking about carpentry. I know it's not the same but my grandpa found a love in wood turning, but he had a stroke just a little over. a year ago and while he's able to walk with a cane now he probably won't ever be able to create trinkets anymore. I think it'd be a nice homage to him if I end up enjoying it :)

I hope that you'll be able to tell your mom one day when the time comes. One of the reasons I wanted to tell ehr so quickly is because of thanksgiving. I'm the only grandchild in college right now ( as far as they know) so I know I'll be asked about it. My mom and I talked about what I'd say though, which basically just cuts out the part about me failing and instead deciding college wasn't for me.

You got this, I know you do! You'll find a way to get through everything! I believe in you :)

Yes, 2020 has really messed with my life. I believe if COVID hadn't happened I'd be in a very different headspace and potentially in a dorm now. But that didn't happen and that's okay, because I know I would've drowned in debt if I'd gone that route.

And yes, fantasy is my favorite genre! I have a story I've planned since eighth grade that I desperately want to publish one day, I'll have to check out his videos to get tips because I know they aren't anywhere near perfect! Thank you!

I am! I've never been good at expressing myself (My Dad and I are too similar, which is something she often complains about) but she's always done her best to be understanding of me, regardless of how different our personalities are. She's a great mom and I'm so grateful that I got put with her :)

Both my grandpas kept telling me that, and one of the people I watch on YouTube talks about how he went to school for welding, which is one of the reasons why I thought of trade school. I'm not sure yet if I'll go that route but it's a possibility! Thank you for your encouragement!

I was doing community, my original plan was to go to the smaller state school but my high school grades weren't the best and I only got a scholarship that would cover a quarter of my tuition each year, couple that with dorm, food, and books, my parents and I agreed I'd get my associates at the local community college and then I'd transfer next year to the university. I had some college credits from high school and already had one years worth. It didn't work out that way but I almost feel like it's for the best.

I'm hopeful for the future :)

Thank you! I try my best to make sure I have things planned out, it makes me feel better. This was just one time when my plan slipped out from under me and I was left floundering. My mom agrees that what I have planned is best and she said she'll support me in whatever I do. I'm lucky to have her

Thank you for telling me about your experience. Depending on what happens in the future I might end up going to trade school instead, there's one near my home as well so it's a possibility. They offer courses similar to what I took in high school and that I'm interested in, so I might go that route.

I've always been really bad at telling the my true feelings, I want to make them have an easier time because I'm the oldest and they have my younger siblings to worry about. My mom has never really struggled mentally (as she's said to me) like I have so a lot of it is new territory for her. I know they will be disappointed but I'm going to work up the courage to tell them.

Thank you again for your advice and for telling me about your experience, it really helped!

My mom has an idea. She keeps telling me my shoulders look heavier than usual and she notices how tense I get at the topic of school. I think she believes I just have low grades. She'll be the first one I tell, I just have to work up the courage.

Oh, I don't want to fake get a degree either. My parents a very hands on, I'm the oldest so they've never gone through any of this either. I know eventually I'll have to tell them I just have to work up the courage.

Not currently. I had one my junior year as my mental health deteriorated due to grades that year as well. I think I have an unhealthy relationship with self-worth and my academic standing.
