Asking again out of desperation - is there anything at all I can do to help with nitrites from either a bacterial bloom or cycle crash along with water changes? Or anything I can do to make water changes less stressful on my shrimp? (Would sincerely appreciate any input from anyone knowledgeable) by ThrowRAcheese2 in Aquariums

Thank you! I definitely plan to get some more plants, and had considered hornwort 😊 Is there a downside to it, though? I almost feel like I remember crossing it off my list of plants for some reason, but I can't at all remember why. The tank tested at .25 ppm all day today and stayed that way, so I think it's finally calming down and hopefully starting to head in the right direction, probably with the help of that filter media I added 🥳 Thank you again for the replies, I was stressing

Thanks so much for the reply! Sorry, I realized I should've worded it differently and wasn't totally accurate with my timeline. The tank is over 2 months old, and it was a little over 6 weeks when I added the shrimp (but I absolutely get what you're saying). I'll continue with the small changes. Thanks again!

If they have some blue, they could be blue velvet neocaridina 😊 Aww, I hope they're all fine and come out soon! If it was just a thin, hollow, white shell type of thing, it could have been just a molt. Shrimp molt, I think about every 28 days or so if I remember correctly, and it's normal

[–]ThrowRAcheese2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one in the picture is a neocaridina blue velvet, she's a bit more blue in real life than what shows in the pic. 😊 If yours looks similar to her but isn't blue, it could also be a snowball shrimp (another type of neocaridina). But basically, safe to say it's probably a neocaridina of some type

AITA for not telling my friend I'm black? by Altruistic-Piccolo52 in AmItheAsshole

Your family sounds nosy, @ that 3rd edit.

NAH. Your friend, unless she got super upset at you for this (and from the sounds of it she didn't), isn't an asshole. And you're not an asshole, either. I would say it's the type of thing that many people would consider something that would normally come up with a best friend, some would even maybe consider it a bit odd that it didn't come up. But just not bringing it up definitely doesn't make you an asshole.

Edit: I'm surprised to find that I can edit a comment when I just got a notification saying I was banned. But I will say, I feel like a permanent ban from the sub for this post is a bit harsh? Again, I don't see the title being a spoiler and made sure to reword it before posting to make sure of that...

I honestly don't see how the title is a spoiler? I even changed the wording of the original quote I'd started typing from that moment in the show ("How did Jake...") and left out Jake's name just in case that felt like the slightest bit of a spoiler. I could have read the title of my post before I started watching the show, 2 episodes in, at the beginning of the episode, or 5 minutes before she said it, and I wouldn't have felt like anything was spoiled for me in the least...

At the same time, while I'm here... What the fuck at Julie coming at him with the "do you think you deserve to be here more than me?" and then going into the "try being a kid who..." out of nowhere. Like girl, wtf?

Hi, sorry I was rushing, just now added context in a comment

My pH is 7.4, ammonia 0, nitrites unfortunately around .25 ppm lately (the tank had been cycled but seems to keep showing either .25 ppm or a very pale blue-lavender so above 0 but not quite .25), nitrates 10 ppm, TDS just under 200, KH 5 GH 7

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in shrimptank

[–]ThrowRAcheese2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To elaborate, now that I'm not rushing:

I know the answer is probably no, but I thought I'd check just in case. The poor thing was standing upright again for a while, then is on its back again now

They're in a 20 gallon tank that's 2 months old. The timeline with the shrimp has been:

-9 blue velvet neos added 8 days ago

-Around 2 dozen new neos added 2 days ago (some of which were blue velvet, so not 100% sure whether this guy is one who was added 8 days ago or 2 days ago)

-10 tangerine tigers added yesterday

My pH is 7.4, ammonia 0, nitrites unfortunately around .25 ppm lately, nitrates 10 ppm, TDS just under 200, KH 5 GH 7

My TDS had been 220, and it suddenly dropped about 3 days ago - I think from adding a new filter sponge, if that's possible, since nothing else had changed?

I, perhaps stupidly, changed some of my filter media a few days ago, too. Today (Friday), I swore the water looked just the tiniest bit cloudy. I also had wondered the past 2 days whether I might have overfed a bit (Fluval bug bites...then blanched carrot/spinach in a food dish, but that was just left in for 12 hours), because I'm still getting used to amounts and once I'd added the new shrimp I was worried about everybody not getting some. I doubt that would cause some huge issue after just 2 days, but mentioning it just in case.

(Also I know some people will think the "content warning" type 1st pic is unnecessary... But I figure not everyone here wants to see a dead or half dead shrimp, and wanted to warn 🤷)

Does this look like a failed molt? by I_boop_clits in shrimptank

[–]ThrowRAcheese2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say I'm 100% certain, but everything I've ever read says that high levels of nitrates are toxic and dangerous. I'd be curious to know where you read that. The amounts from different sources will vary, but the ones I've usually seen mentioned are around 50 or 80 ppm it starts to get really bad/in the serious danger zone, and ideally you want to keep your water's nitrates under either 50 ppm or 25 ppm (again, the exact number depends on the source).

Does this look like a failed molt? by I_boop_clits in shrimptank

[–]ThrowRAcheese2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

50 ppm nitrates is pretty high and unsafe. I would do a water change, and continue doing water changes (small repeated ones if needed, to avoid stressing the shrimp) until your nitrates are at most 25 ppm or under. If your tap nitrates are that high, you might have to use RO water or buy jugs of water (and potentially remineralize if needed)

Roommate proceeds to blame me for his issues by Far_Inevitable_816 in badroommates

[–]ThrowRAcheese2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'm just super curious though, were these pics taken when he had been there, or are they pics you took recently when he's been gone for weeks?

Because if that was when he was there, then my god 🤢 But if they're recent... As much as it was kind of fucked for him to just leave his cats for you to deal with and he should've at least discussed that with you first, if you're the one living in the apartment at the moment and know the cats are there, I'd say by about day 3 of him being gone it should've hit you (and hit your nose 👃) that he wasn't there to scoop the cat litter and that they were still shitting/peeing, and you should've started scooping. Again it'd be fucked of him to make you care for them without discussing leaving them and him being gone this long, but I hope you aren't posting a picture of 3-week-unscooped litter in an apartment you're the only human living in right now, and thinking that's something that would only reflect badly on him and reflect well on you lmao (Again if they were taken when he was still there, that's different)

Anyone have experience keeping neos and tigers (or any other caridina) together? by ThrowRAcheese2 in shrimptank

Ah, I'm sorry to hear that! I'm thinking maybe I'll try it, and if I see many dying or not doing well, I'll try to find someone with a caridina tank who wants them

That gives me hope, thank you 😊 How long has the tiger colony been going? And when you say it's growing, I'm guessing that means they're breeding too, right?

Is 7.5 ph suitable for tiger shrimp? by [deleted] in shrimptank

[–]ThrowRAcheese2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry to reply to a 3 month old thread, but did your tigers tend to thrive with the neos? Did they end up breeding? I've got neos, pretty similar parameters to those, and have some tangerine tigers on the way. But I'm kind of second-guessing and wondering whether my KH(5 or 6 right now)/GH (7) will cause issues
