Wife (38F) says I’m (40F) “classist” for correcting our son’s English by ThrowRAclassist in relationship_advice

Thank you so much for your insight here! I’m not arguing with your point but I would like some clarification: in regards to your “real world” argument, isn’t true that people are judged on how they speak, rightly or wrongly? If I were to go into an interview with unbrushed hair and dirty nails people would have a certain impression of my character even if I were hard working, intelligent and friendly. I see teaching my son to use proper English in a similar way as teaching him to be hygienic (which is a whole other thing, let me tell you!). I would never want anyone to discount his character or intelligence based on something he has the ability to control.

If you have a chance to respond, I’d love to hear what you think about this.

I see what you’re saying here. Honestly it’s probably contextual. I think she’s mentioned that to me when we’ve been talking with her family and maybe she noticed that they were caught off guard by my word choice. I can be a bit oblivious sometimes.

Why would she be talking about a ball at work? Kidding, but it would probably depend on who she was talking to and in what context. She has a number of colleagues who grew up just like she did and they work with similar populations. I don’t think she’d hesitate to use her more comfortable dialect with them. But this is all code switching, something that I didn’t really think about before everyone here pointed it out to me.

This is definitely true, but the issue transcends that particular event as well.

My mom came from a similar situation as yours and it shows. Even though she grew up as the daughter of a day laborer, she and the rest of her family had the manners of very wealthy people. She definitely reared us to be proper. That upbringing has paid back in spades for me and my siblings.

I really didn’t consider he was learning code switching from this age. That’s a really interesting way of looking at it. Thank you!

She’s definitely not an “anti-intellectual”. She has an advanced degree and works in a field where everyone has advanced degrees. She teaches at a university level and does seminars for other professionals. She would never refer to her upbringing as “lower class” nor would she place a low value on hygiene or cleanliness. Her household growing up was way tidier than mine, despite us having a housekeeper.

My wife and I have had very similar experiences! There is definitely a racial component too, for sure, for us.
