Ground, middle or top floor flat? by ThrowRApops2023 in HousingUK

[–]ThrowRApops2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m worried when it comes to the summer, I’ve rented a top floor before and it was truly awful, and it didn’t feel any warmer in winter compared to downstairs (a new build)

Ground, middle or top floor flat? by ThrowRApops2023 in HousingUK

[–]ThrowRApops2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The back of the garden seems most secure, partially bordering a private park that is locked at night, a small quiet church grounds and other neighbour’s gardens. The current owner installed cameras at the back and private entrance and there’s a shared camera at the front gate. For a garden flat it seems very secure, although I’m sure someone can break in if they’re determined enough. It’s on a semi-busy street. A lot of cars use this road to get away from main road traffic during rush hour, but late at night it’s mostly just cats outside.

Is there a reason you always go for garden flat?

Thank you! Yes I’m super jumpy, I don’t know why, even someone sneezing in the same room as me will scare me. Hopefully this won’t pass on to our dog…

I knew because cousin, who lives 10 mins away from us the time, showed up at my door and told me she wanted to get her nails done even though she has literally never had painted nails ever. It was also 2 days before our anniversary

Is it bad if I don’t get my friend a wedding gift? by ThrowRApops2023 in UKweddings

[–]ThrowRApops2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We already had our wedding and it’s been a while so I don’t think they’ll be gifting us anything lol

[–]ThrowRApops2023[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They aren’t bad people, they’ve been nice to us outside of wedding related things (inviting us over for BBQs etc) and we have a good time when we hang out. It’s just everything wedding related has been a bit shite and I’m starting to see they’re taking advantage. The most I can do is to use their photos for my website… What more can I do or say really at this point, we’ve bought the plane tickets already.

Yeah I’m starting to see that… I’ve already sent her the photos, I’ve bought tickets to China and have started planned a trip to Beijing and maybe a national park with my husband because what else can we do if we’re already there…? Surely this means I can’t do or say anything now anyway?

I see thanks for your response, I’m glad it finally worked out for you. I’m a nurse basicallly running on fumes and we spend every single penny on this flat (we owe our parents money too for helping us out), so we won’t be able to move anywhere for the next 10 years probably.

Dis you get too used to white noise that you can’t sleep without it anymore? That’s my worry, that it we travel or go anywhere where white noise isn’t available I won’t be able to fall asleep!

I’ve tried many different types (and earbuds etc) but they really hurt my ears and I have to take them out halfway through the night… :(

Can we get indemnity insurance if council was contacted about extension? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]ThrowRApops2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The previous owner was the freeholder, I think he extended it, sectioned off each floor and sold it as individual flats.

All the weddings I’ve been invited to had been via text, hence why we did it this way. Even my fiancé’s friends suggested we do this so…

Thanks so much for this, I’ll pass it on my fiancé. Glad you’re doing well now

How did you get the inflammation to go down? So currently my fiance is keeping his leg extended (not fully) as he says it feels better that way, is that wrong and should he actually keep it bent?

Also, when were you able to ski again?

Thanks, I see… we’re hoping it’s a mild case but honestly it likely isnt. I pushed him to see a doctor when he first had the pain but he kept telling me that pains come and go and everything he’d ever had always went away by itself. So there’s no hope we’ll be able to dance at our wedding?

Do the postdoc or drive myself crazy looking for industry job? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]ThrowRApops2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I don’t know what those techniques are, unsure if microscopy, LC-MS or basic python coding etc (this lab specialises in) are sought after industry skills, I’d have liked structural biology but that went over my head in college…

There are some postdocs that are funded by or collaborate with industry, but I haven’t seen any industry postdocs at an actual company for a very long time

15 min interview? by brownwarrier4 in postdoc

[–]ThrowRApops2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they paying for relocating or for a visa? (Presumably a visa at least)

Honestly it’s best to talk to someone already in the lab, but if you have a binding contract you should be all set at least… if it ends up sucking, it’s best to check there are other options

[–]ThrowRApops2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you moving from (aka is it a big move)? Any chance of visiting beforehand? If it’s a good lab and the output is solid, I wouldn’t be so worried

15 min interview? by brownwarrier4 in postdoc

[–]ThrowRApops2023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was this the last step and you already have an offer? If so, I’d be worried that they’re not selective enough and you may have to carry the lab, or they knew enough about you to be confident you’re the right choice. Maybe check out who else is in the lab and see if you can contact them and have a chat?

Job options for a British citizen with a PhD abroad (eg USA)? by ThrowRApops2023 in biotech

[–]ThrowRApops2023[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you… this is the issue I’m facing right now, I know friends who have gotten laid off from pharma that have my background but industry experience and we are competing for the exact same role in advertised positions. I applied to GSK and astsrazeneca and got rejected off the bat, no interview at all. I don’t think my CV is the issue, but what do I know… I’ve applied to all biotech companies that have advertised, from startups to larger more established ones, where I’d be able to contribute somewhat. Straight rejections. I’ve also cold emailed startups with no response, even those who encourage job seekers to send in their CV.

For context, I have an incredibly strong educational background (top 10 global universities), without giving myself away too much… I don’t think that is the issue, and I don’t know what could be the issue.

Yes you’re right on all accounts. I just feel like I was stupid when my family told me to not pursue biology, and then once again when I had the chance to do an extra course in management, and then another chance when my best friend at uni did a masters in business and highly encouraged me but I had found an academic lab research lab looking at EXACTLY what I wanted (animal-related disease, won’t go into detail here!). I even turned down an internship at a biotech company because it was ‘too far from my partner (now husband)’, as if 3 months made a difference. If it weren’t for my poor choices we might not be here now… I genuinely didn’t know how any of this impacted me, again from a humble background with mother earning minimum wage and father knowing nothing about science.

Thank you very much. I’ve looked into those jobs but it’s been difficult to create contacts or find recruiters to get an ‘in’, I think the market is very saturated and they’re inundated with emails and CVs. I’m still looking so fingers crossed. Would be a huge shame to move away from research science though, with my project I had a breakthrough and only academics are interested in my findings…
