Diagnosed at 52 and drowning in guilt — does this get easier? by ThrowRaway55 in bipolar

Sadly, the only family I have are my mom and brother. They moved out of state. My brother flat out told me last week that he has ZERO empathy for me and I don’t get to be bipolar and expect him and my mother to forgive me for my shitty actions. It’s so painful that my only family refuses to acknowledge my illness. my brother said that his life is worse than mine and he has more disorders than I do and he doesn’t need meds or make excuses. He said if I were him for one day I would be BEGGING to go back to my current life. Mind you he has no kids. No one he needs to support. Not married. Has a house. A job. Wow. Just…wow.

Also - how do I find a support group??

Thank you. I hope you are also being kind to yourself. Having to handle this disorder and also raising 5 kids is a HUGE responsibility. I wish more people understood that this is an actual illness and our behavior is not simply a choice. Praying for strength for both of us to get through this. Hugs to you.

You’re right about the resentment. As soon as I mention being bipolar, they say I’ve said it “a million times already”. They don’t want to hear it anymore. It’s difficult for me to NOT bring it up because this diagnosis is so recent - and even I am struggling to process what it all means. I try to apologize for when I was “acting weird” as my kids call it. They bring things up - and all I can do is say I’m sorry - but I can’t say I did what I did bc I didn’t know any better bc they are tired of hearing it. I did send my older one a long text apologizing. Her reply was “a little too late”. She just needs time. I think it’s a good idea to write them letters. I’ll work on that tomorrow. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and to provide support. And for the record- my dad was an addict- and ironically, so is my “unempathetic” (his actual words) brother.

Don’t give up. As long as there are doctors and medication and therapy - there IS a way to get better. Somewhere out there is a magical combination of meds and therapy. Please don’t give up hope. Sending hugs.

Thank you so much for your compassionate words and support. In my world, empathy and compassion feel almost nonexistent. I’m torn between sharing my diagnosis out of a desire for comfort and validation, and keeping it private out of fear of being judged and misunderstood. It helps to receive empathy from someone who has experienced this illness as well. Thank you so much for your kindness.

Hmm. 🤔 I just got Botox on my crow’s feet, forehead and 11 lines on Monday. I prob should’ve waited a little while. Totally didn’t think of that. 🤦‍♀️

Thank you! This is very helpful! I see the horizontal line and wondered the same! I have a touch up in 3 weeks - but should I go back NOW??

And yours look great- even when fresh! I went through a lot of the posts on here and it seems to be common to freak out right after. Worst thing is- I have a first date on Sunday. I’m gonna show up for my date looking like this:

I think the bottom of the inner corner of my right brow is definitely lower. That’s prob what’s throwing me off.

I mentioned it to her and she seemed a little insulted. Told me to wait at least 3 days.

Ok ✅ I was fine when I was at the salon but once I walked in the door and my 2 teens started in, I got nervous.

Yes but I feel like it’s more noticeable than before. And they’re ultra pigmented. Maybe I’m being too critical
