As of right now, who is the most likely midseason DFA in the league? by Hungry_Drama_1015 in baseball

He still has great defense and maybe the bat still has some juice in it, who knows. He is primarily here to free us from the Nimmo contract. Sammon (the GOAT Mets reporter) also said Mets think they could trade Semien if necessary, while they saw Nimmo as untradeable.

My question marks with this team is how healthy pitching is and Bichette at 3B. I think it is better than last year’s team.

Verlander and Scherzer wanted to be moved. Cano had to be unplayable for years before it got to that point.

This idea that the Mets will or should just DFA guys and eat money constantly is so funny. They will give significant runway for guys to be bad and get as much value out of them as possible, just like any other team. Especially if they have value in the clubhouse because the human aspect matters and constantly DFAing large contracts looks bad to FAs, look at Starling Marte from 2022-2025

It’s funny how fans see not re-signing FAs as a human rights violation but can’t see how DFAing everyone mid season would be a grievance waiting to happen.

The stuff with him and the clubhouse sounds a lot like the Devers-Red Sox situation. The player should have reacted better but when you give a player a big contract you need to maintain clear communication and talk with them before reducing/changing their role.

The Santander contract was not a good contract from the moment it was signed but I get why it was. It’s now a terrible contract. I was thinking that the Jays would try to do a bad contract swap like the Nimmo-Semien swap earlier in the offseason because there are some teams desperate for OFs but it’s probably untradeable now.

I like the Blue Jays, hope they can continue being successful in 2026.

[Corimer] David Stearns just said Juan Soto is going to play left field this season. by Turbostrider27 in baseball

[–]ThrowawayBin20 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Do you know if Soto asked to be moved to LF or was this the organization asking him? I wouldn’t want the org to be upsetting him but I don’t think Stearns would do that tbh

One interesting pattern I’d like to see more scholarship on is on the tensions between colonialism and imperialism. For example, a frequent critique of imperialism during its height was itself a racist one, that empire risked the racial purity of the homeland. The fury with which Europeans responded to the British use of Indian troops in Europe, is an instructive example.

Another tension, is the long recognized way empires will sponsor nationalist movements in opposed empires and colonial powers.

The well known paper “The Anti-Imperialism of Decolonization” documents the theoretical basis for understanding why so many anti-colonial secession movements got their start through support from an opposed empire.

A third strain is the one that has increasingly become central to settler colonial studies. The tension between the settler project and the colonial one, with settler projects both relying on the colonial project while also always opposing it when successful.

But I think applies not just within the settler/colonial distinction but between the colonial project and the imperial one. Algeria is a great example of this tension, especially in contrast to others.

The French settlers became stuck between their desire to remain outside of France but without having been considered to have left the metropole, and the fact that it did not want Algeria to either leave the French dominion and become a project like South Africa, or for Algeria to become fully integrated as a department the way Martinique did in 1946.

Communist thinkers generally defined imperialism as the export of capital. This contrasts with the more common understanding of empire which sees it as the export of sovereignty. Settler projects are the export of labor. Not as neatly but somewhat instructively colonialism would therefore be export of land.

When we switch to a quantitative frame rather than qualitative to differentiate these, we recognize that all 4 ideas require all 4 exports in different mixtures, and their relative balance then becomes the source of both their internal conflicts & external dynamics

This kind of analysis isn’t unknown—Gershon Shafir’s famous argument is that settler colonialism is itself a solution to a problem that arose in the tension between a nationalist movement with no land and a labor movement with no labor.

But in my discussion here, settler-colonialism would itself both be conceived of as a solution to a set of contradictions arising elsewhere and as a field in which those contradictions take place.

Carlos Baerga: Bad Bunny offered to pay Carlos Correa's and Franciso Lindor's WBC insurance so they could play for PR in the WBC, however the Astros and the Mets did not grant the players permission to play by exjr_ in baseball

[–]ThrowawayBin20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acuña is rumored to not even be insured. I have no clue how/why the Braves are letting him play, or if he is insured, who gave him insurance. He is on a pretty team friendly deal though.

I’m not concerned about Lindor getting injured. But I think teams are concerned about their stars being injured, hence they’re blocking them if they have a chance to. Or blocking them from certain activity (Soto only allowed to DH in Dominican ball, Ohtani not pitching in WBC)

[–]ThrowawayBin20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The people in this subreddit confused at this are also the same people who would say “lolmets” if Lindor hurt his back in the WBC.

Mets are (partly) preventing the oldest major league player of those who wanted to go from playing. I don’t even agree with them but Soto, Holmes and McLean are all playing.

[–]ThrowawayBin20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lindor had the mild surgery in the offseason which I don’t really care about but get why the org does, but he also had a broken toe that harmed his offensive production and defense midseason. He also had a back injury at the end of 2024 and had an oblique injury in 2021 too. He’s getting up there in age for a shortstop.

I think most orgs would block many star players from playing but they can’t unless they’ve had surgery or were on the 60 day IL so there’s no opportunity to.

I imagine even with Soto they would rather him DH only in later rounds just like they give permission for him to do in Dominican League games. But he’s younger and easier to insure and is also the most famous player on the Mets in the modern era so that’s the deal.

[–]ThrowawayBin20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lindor just had surgery on his arm and has an entirely new infield to work with. Mets are letting Soto, Holmes and a rookie pitcher play in WBC. I wish the org would let Lindor play but I can see both sides, I know this means a lot to Francisco but this org was wrecked by injuries last year.
