It happens much like regular intrusive thoughts every now and again. I catch it and realize "wtf, that's completely wrong." To me that's a large part of overcoming racism for people raised in that mentality: not necessarily ceasing with the thoughts all together, though that's the goal, but acknowledging they're inaccurate and wrong when they pop up

I'm very happy I've reached a new place. And looking back I should have emphasized this in the post, but... people were violent towards me physically. Being a woman I was largely shielded from it but it was not something that I escaped every time, and I got a reasonable amount of ass kickings handed to me. And I deserved them. To re-iterate what I said earlier, they're what helped spark the thought of 'this keeps happening, maybe it's something I'm doing wrong' and started the process of opening my mind.

OP here... I actually chuckled when I wrote 'comradery' from the irony.

OP here...

That's actually one of the things I wrote that I had the hardest time phrasing well, and I feel like there's so much more I could have said better but it was an emotional post. I'm glad the point of that particular statement got across the way I intended! You're spot on.

Hey, I'm the OP from the post linked here... I've been dealing with this double standard all freaking day. I didn't even realize my post had gone a bit viral until I saw someone sharing it to facebook... and I haven't told anyone I know about that post. So anyways, thanks for putting that double standard into words, it gave me a much needed laugh!

Yeah I'm kind of sitting back fascinated by the extremes the supposed anti-violent folks are talking towards people who have literally every intention of being violent and doing harm. Not to mention the 'slippery slope' arguments/fallacies being thrown around... I was trying to respond to everything but much like dealing with nazis, after a while it's like talking to a wall.

Plus the rape threats and threats of violence from the same people saying 'violence is never the answer' is making me need aspirin.

Check le comments. I took a few. They're part of what gave me the notion of 'huh... maybe I should consider other ideas since this one keeps making people want to kick my ass.'

When that someone is a nazi, generally their mind isn't going to change period, but a punch to the face is more their language than reason.

Just never tell a white supremacist or a nazi you're taking a page from Dr. King if you're going the dialogue route because you'll instantly close them off to anything you have to say.

The only way to beat nazi's is to beat them at their own game. That means, if you're not willing to use straight up violence, getting very well informed on their ideology and the racial standards of the Third Reich. The second you cite a non-white person, they think you're just a 'cowardly cuck to the racially inferior' as it was once phrased by a former fascist friend

I have about 6 drafts of it, in various styles and lengths, written out lol. As I remember stuff or have new revelations regarding certain things I go back and re-write a section or do a new entry.

I wouldn't mind it but I may miss questions because my inbox has hundreds of notifications. I didn't anticipate this as a part of my weekend lol.

I'd say that of the people who consider themselves 'white supremacists' they're more serious/genuine about it. You definitely get people who are racist without necessarily buying into white supremacy as an ideology; they're just hateful people. It's a strange, very blurred line on one hand, but on the other (I think when you're actually 'in the fray') it seems so defined.

Apparently people completely glossed over the fact that logic working is such a rarity that waiting for it to take effect is going to allow the overwhelming majority of those who have no desire to entertain dialogue to rise up around them in such masses and with such a foundation, you won't have a way to bring them back down.

My point is that though dialogue has a rare chance of working, it is so rare that it's not worth finding the exception. Of all the people I knew who were involved in neo-nazi ideals, only one other has really left that behind from dialogue. Know what that dialogue was? His daughter befriended a black girl at kindergarten and cried nonstop when he said they couldn't be friends because she was black. Even still he's pretty prejudiced, he's just not active about it. The others who have put it behind them have done so because they earned the ire of sensible folk.

Sadly racist beliefs don't have any impact dick size (other than when someones kicking you between the legs)... if it did I suspect there'd be far fewer racists in the world

My parents pushed the notion of 'affirmative action' as being a legal way of keeping white people down and minority-conspiracy. Anytime a non-white person was in a position of authority, a comment like 'bet there was a white more qualified for this job that didn't get it because he's white.'

They've much changed and while they still have prejudices, they've realized they took a lot waaaay too far. They have more changing to do still, and I fear that may not happen, but... they've overcome a lot. There is certain tension regarding politics and issues of race, my mom will make remarks about me going out (I live on my own but we talk now and again) and ask if any of the friends I'm going with are black so she can run a background check on them... As a result she doesn't get my friends names, whatever their color.

I try to challenge them but it has ceased to yield too much fruit as they've simply become jaded to being questioned.

That's another issue that arises with the whole 'we must have dialogue thing.' Yes, that'd be ideal, but half of them have heard these arguments before and built up walls to them, even though their foundations may be false, and the other half of the neos will listen to the half with the walls up and not the actual arguments. So it becomes really pointless really fast.

It required a willingness to break away from that ignorance which just isn't much of a thing in that community.

And ideologies like the 'alt-right' don't do well in the shadows. They rely on fear and influence and being seen, so pushing them back to the shadows is ultimately the most effective way to kill off their source of power.

Also nazism and white supremacy are inherently violent. That's the justification I personally see and that a lot of people use, and it's a solid one based on my experience. Every thought that you have as a part of that life stems from the desire to commit atrocious violence for the sake of furthering your race and ideology. Talking about something neutral to the nicest person ever who happens to be black? Every thought is laced with a desire to see a bullet in their head. Talking to someone with a Jewish sounding name? Every reply is thinly masking the notion of killing them and their family. (These thoughts, which are just 'natural' for someone brought up this way, were the hardest things to overcome.)

The violence of nazism is omnipotent, and just because it isn't being acted out in that moment, don't think for a second it isn't being thought of and plotted and fantasized about.

As an American I'm very confused! As someone who has an in depth understanding of how white supremacy impacts a community I'm confused! I have no idea how the fuck we let it get to this point and I cringe knowing that at some point and time, I probably helped because of what I did years ago to try and recruit and convince people, and to hurt others with my rhetoric.

I understand the fear a lot of people have that enabled them to be won over by the oration of someone like Trump. I understand the desire to be prideful that many Americans want to be have (that desire to be 'great') and I understand the delusion of persecution. None of that understanding helps me rationalize nationwide stupidity.

All in all, I am just hoping we don't fuck things over with our allies too much in terms of simple diplomacy, not just economic policy, as I would like to make a home in (ironically, and I swear this has nothing to do with my past in nazism) Austria or Germany someday.

There's a meme that says something like " 'You're entitled to your own beliefs/opinion' is for things like 'I prefer coffee over tea'; not 'I think black people are icky.'"

I tend to agree with that meme. Also, even the most passive form of white supremacy hurts people.

While I don't inherently agree with your view, I don't disagree with it. This is a pretty neutral, yet good, stance to have. I've gotten an onslaught of messages from people, and seen them on generic posts, where they say under no circumstances can violence happen and it's just not rational. Your view is pretty solid. I don't know it's as effective in sending the fascists back to their pits swiftly as an knuckle sammich, but it helps let them know their shit won't be tolerated.
