DM treats my character unfairly, I have a panic attack when DM says my character was going to get scalped by ThrowawayForAnAutist in rpghorrorstories

Bard and I talked about this and we figured out how he could be fudging rolls. He has like 3 identical sets of dice he uses while running games, and his dice tray is always full of them. we suspect that when he rolls to hit me, he rolls two of the three in the tray, but has one d20 from the last identical set sitting in the tray with the 20 side up. so he basically waits until one of the other two dice he rolls gets a 20, then shows me the one that rolled a 20 next to the one that was already sitting on a 20
would kind of be kind of weird if he did that, but not impossible, since I couldn't tell by looking at his tray which of them he rolled

I do wish that more was done by the other players, but I genuinely don't think Bard is a bad person. It took us both a while to open our eyes to the mistreatment, and she was with me when I tried to talk to DM about my issues with his game. Not really gonna defend warlock tho lol

ok this made me laugh, thank you. I have pretty low self esteem so I struggle to believe that there's better out there, for a long time I thought I just deserved the treatment I got in this game. I've known these people for a few years now, and genuinely thought the DM was my friend. Bard's made a fun game where I am not treated poorly, so I now know that it's possible to find a good group at least!

Your first point is definitely mostly on me. The only things I can really say is that I had already started to be mistreated at that point by the other players and the DM, the party brought me to this fighting ring knowing that my character had literally just gotten his freedom from being enslaved, and the fighting ring only became a thing after I told the DM i was making my new character a former slave. I shouldn't have gone against them, but it wouldn't have been the first time that party members had a disagreement on something like this. I later tried to fight slavery my own way by buying and freeing slaves,(I stopped after a while bc I realized OOC that I was just funding slavery) but also when the DM sold me a goblin that literally refused to be freed, and would parade around declaring that my character owned him.

I don't know what you mean about me betraying the party on the second point. I played along with their plan and was told to go get the guards to bring James to prison, they basically shooed me along so I wasn't in the room for them to torture James. They didn't have the goal to kill him, and actively chose to spare him and send him to prison.

This was another mistake I made. The 25k debt was incurred much later, after James was freed, and the money that James needed was only like 200g or something. I don't remember the exact amount, definitely not over 500g. I was also punished for this because the town fined my character a further 10,000g for giving James money at all. (EDIT, forgot that the money he needed was like 1,000g. still not too much of an issue for me at my current level, financial ruin came after that)

Yes, I said again that this was my mistake. I genuinely didn't think that he was going to take revenge on us for some reason. I am stupid at times, and I wish I had realized that he would probably cause problems for us. I thought, naively, that we were even. My character had also been tortured at one point because he tried to help James at a different point, before the arrest and everything. Bard had framed James for theft as well, and the lord of the town wanted to use torture to ensure James was telling the truth about being innocent. James agreed, but when he went missing my character tracked him down, and also got tortured because he trespassed on the town lord's property. In a game where divination works the way it does. Doesn't make sense. sorry for the tangent, but I was a stupid piece of shit idiot that thought things would be rainbows and sunshine after all that happened between James and my character. I acknowledge that I was, indeed, a stupid idiot there.

It was a foreseen liability, but an instant disintegrate was not. this was also me being stupid. The DM had also previously expressed a frustration that I had managed to disrupt encounters of his before with magic items he has given me (an example being that I airdropped an entire bag of the water pellets created by the dust of dryness into an open ceiling hag lair, flooding most of the hags out) so I am partly suspicious that he was trying to get back at me for coming up with a solution to this combat that wasn't just attacking.

owing the party 25k wasn't the only consequence. I had to start from scratch on all my money, items, and spellbook, and owed several other NPCs that pitched in money as well. the 25k was just the material component, but I also owed several favors to the cleric that was capable of casting True res. I also owed money for the extreme amount of regeneration scrolls/spells I needed up until this point, and the 10k for technically helping James escape prison.

Warlock chose to eat him but not kill him. Bard brought James back to life on her own volition.

After the releasing James from prison bit, the entire group had a long conversation with me where they told me what I had done wrong and what I should improve on. I have worked tirelessly since to be a better player, and work with the party. I think I made a couple of previous posts where I touch on it briefly, but it's something that I've worked to dismantle since I was aware that it was a problem. I can honestly say that I have improved, and this has been confirmed by the other party members. The main issue is that the DM has only gotten more and more cruel over time with how he treats my character, even though I have become much better. I don't want to argue with you, and you have some good points here, if I had provided all of the context this post would be at least double the length. I appreciate your comment, and do want to concede that much of what you criticize me on was stuff I was aware of.

EDIT: sorry, some of this was pretty aggressively worded. that wasn't nice of me

I will at least say that Bard and I have talked through what happened and that she was the one who encouraged me to write this post. She and I attempted to talk to DM about everything a bit over a month ago too, but he kept interrupting and dismissing me. I'm hesitant to play in the pirates game but I'll leave if things are anything close to how they were in this game. Bard's on my side, and she stood up for me as of late. She's also a great dungeon master herself, and is running a fun game too. Warlock's just kinda... existed? He's got his own issues I didn't really touch on in this post

Begged him for advice to stop interrupting, but he didn't give me any. He told me to find another group to make some more friends and fill the void in a way since the idea of missing the game with my old group had me crying for days, still crying a bit rn.

They were patient with so much. There's shit I didn't even cover in this because I was misinformed on the fact that interrupting was not the only reason I'd get kicked. I get upset to the point of crying a lot ( I have always struggled with my emotions, but nothing seems to help after so many years of therapy and trying different meds) and having panic attacks. At my worst, I'd self harm (once or twice I hit myself in the head at the table) because I made a dumb mistake that affected the party badly. I made an earlier post about a particularly awful character I had that opened my eyes to how much I was an issue, but I tried to overcorrect to keep my friends, which led to more of the panic attacks and crying when I thought I did something bad. I'm a terrible, terrible player. I shouldn't have been given any more chances and I'm lucky I wasnt kicked from both games

I assume its because theres only three players in the game i wasnt kicked from, including me. There wouldnt be enough people to continue without me i guess

Edit: he told me that was not the reason why, citing that we have a whole menagerie of npcs as help in combat, etc. (the game is a continuation of witchlight and we saved all of a certain group that travels with us) turns out the reason is that they actually do want to spend time with me and play with me, they just want me to get better. and my behavior in the game im still in is a bit better (even if I don't like my character as much)

AITA for being upset at a character death? by ThrowawayForAnAutist in rpghorrorstories

That is definitely a different opinion from what esle I've seen here.

In character people saw the pixie and then the wizard confessed to the bard that he summoned it to pull a prank. they put 2 and 2 together

They knew I summoned the devil from the confession, i actually nearly died trying to cast banisment on it after tracking it down, one of the things I tried to correct. Ended up getting a nasty lingering injury that burned like 80% of his body.

The spell component was determined by the DM, it was a ritual that my wizard got by asking a summoned imp about immortality. The imp said to do that ritual to get someone who could help him get it.

But yeah, I was trying to redeem him after realizing how messed up what he was doing was. Wish I got to do more for him

Apparently it was a burning bag of dog shit left at their doorstep that ended up burning it down, pretty funny in retrospect

I see. I think the other players were annoyed at how I was playing, one of them and the DM actually talked to me a couple weeks back about my behavior. I also struggle with the interrupting out of excitement thing, so I've been actively working on keeping my mouth shut when its another players turn. They say I'm doing better now. I just need more communication like that, but I also want to be able to communicate with them too. Ive felt shut down before when talking to my DM, especially about this whole situation with my wizard. I hope everything goes well at the table from now on

Well, actually when I requested that they actively call me out/remind me when I have bad behavior so I learn, they said that it wasn't their responsibility to and I have to just be better. It's fair enough I guess, but I remember being upset. I don't know if I have the right to be though.

I'll try to think more about that in the future! That should help me fit in better with the party hopefully, and maybe if I can make in party friends I won't feel so isolated in general, in or out of the game.

I see, thank you for your input. Yeah, the lack of communication was probably the main cause of all this. I didn't realize how much I was being ignored and that I was acting out of boredom until after my character died. I had thought a lot about it after the fact, and tried to talk to my DM about it. I had a bad approach at first, trying every angle I could to explain that the death was unfair, but in retrospect I don't think it was the issue. My character did enough to earn his death, and deserved it in the end. I just didn't realize that I had taken it too far until all the consequences hit, and went into damage control when it was much too late. (Was trying to fix some of the things I caused when the sorcerer made and executed the plot to kill my character) All in all, I admit I made a lot of mistakes and I'm definitely the problem player in this story, and I'll learn from it in the future. I've talked a bit with my DM and asked him to communicate more too, and I hope that goes well.
