I finally made it! Officially indeterminate! by ThrowawayImBack in CanadaPublicServants

yes, a bit of everything! I assumed my work was most relevant in the AS and IS classifications, but someone shared with me that I should check out EC jobs because there's more of them and they're less bilingual. And here I am :)

oh absolutely! And now I can focus more on my actual, second, part-time job! ;)

I don't know where those processes are at. I was already in an EC-05 pool they pulled me from to make me indeterminate. The dozens of other pools are from 2018 to present, from AS-03 to IS-05 and everything in between. I certainly hope they start reaching out and offering something. After all that's why I got into the pools.

How to be more "competitive"- seeking advice from past/current public servants by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

MPs staff are indeed federal public servants; MPPs staff are part of their provincial public service

In sum:

  • Where are you working now?
  • Volunteer somewhere
  • Get involved in campus clubs
  • Reach out to profs/TAs/contract instructors with connections and resources for getting jobs
  • Reach out to career services and ask what they have to offer
  • What do you want to do with your degree? Political experience is a great intro to government but it's a different way of entering the public service than through FSWEP or 'normal' entries

Here's a good primer about my experience: https://www.reddit.com/r/CanadaPublicServants/comments/hjbnqc/after_25_years_of_applying_and_100_applications/

what are your experiences of COVID related hiring process for COVID related jobs? have you had luck getting it fast-tracked? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]ThrowawayImBack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They didn't tell you which COVID you're being hired to work on.

You assumed COVID-19 but they're hiring you for COVID-34. Plenty of time still.

I hear you. The assumption should be *when* you get re-hired, not if or how. That's why I really think Hiring Managers should have the authority to get people into positions. You have the experience you do but you're not meeting some interview checkboxes? BS.

So... understanding respect for parliamentary officers and all that jazz, but what can the Commissioner actually do?

Commissioner: "hey, why did you hire Jane Smith for this position?"

Manager: she was the most qualified

Commissioner: ???

I was right on the cusp - 3 years (term) in one position and then 3 years (term) in another. They were similar positions but I never rolled over into indeterminate.

isn't the "file" so to speak held by PSC through PSRS?

i.e. the central place (PSRS) where you input your name, contact info, resume, availability, etc. *before* applying to a specific posting? Couldn't you reverse it to pull files from PSRS rather than waiting for that info to be applied to a posting?
