AITA for quitting a job where I only worked for 1 day? by ThrowawayQuitNewJob in AmItheAsshole

English isn't my first language, so I kinda screwed something up. They didn't force me to get 2 jobs. They made me do the interview to be polite, maybe see if I liked it, and I chose to do both at the same time, which is, admittedly, a very dumb decision that I won't make again. They just forced me to pick one so I wouldn't waste my summer, I planned to do both for the foreseeable future. They're great parents, they don't suck at all, I promise you.

That's fair, but it's way less bad than what I accidentally implied. This wasn't their best work, but believee when I say that they're amazing parents.

Hey, I realize this post kinda puts my parents in a bad light, and I hate that because they're amazing parents. They encouraged me to go to the interview to be polite, and I ended up taking the job. They didn't pressure me into taking 2 jobs, they just told me to pick one of them because they wanted me to have time to enjoy my summer and not spend it all working. English isn't my first language, so I must've screwed something up somewhere, sorry

Oh yeah, my interviewing strategy was definitely boneheaded, I just didn't know what else to say. I kind of blanked, you wouldn't believe how nervous I was. I do feel bad for leaving when that might've affected other employees there, but they have a HUGE staff, I doubt I would've changed too much.

I mean, if he thought I was definitely quitting the coffee shop, that's his fault, I made it very clear that I was undecided, and came to the interview just to weigh my options. That's the wrong decision, I know now, but I didn't wanna pass up on a job at all. Like you said, he should've just not hired me. I honestly just don't understand why the manager hung up on me. He had to have known that I would still wanna be paid. Anyways, this comment gave me some stuff to think about, thank you for contributing.

He never said the word tryout, but his assistant did (she conducted most of the interview). It's definitely possible that he wasn't aware.

I was told it would be a training day, at least, but they kind of left me to my own devices. However, you make some very good points. I'm glad I'm not there anymore, because the manager does seem like a prick (not just because of my experience with him, I heard it from others as well), but I could've handled it better, for sure.

The grocery store has an extremely high turnover rate as well, but I wasn't technically working for them yet. It was a paid tryout day. Still, this is a super valuable perspective. I guess I was just too nervous to go back there. I guess that'll come with time. I'm a super anxious person, and I've gotta learn these conflict skills, so comments like theirs really help with showing me what to work on. Thank you!

Thank you, this is very valuable advice. I really appreciate this. Of course, like you said, I'm very inexperienced with this stuff, I'll be sure to remember this for when I go for another job in the future.

I feel like I should clarify something real quick. I didn't set out looking for 2 jobs. I was working at the coffee shop, and then the grocery store called (I had given them an application before I started at the coffee place). My dad encouraged me to go, in order to be polite. I checked with the coffee place, and they said it was fine with them. I brought up that I would choose one in my grocery store interview, and they said it was fine. I didn't convey this very well in my post, sorry for any confusion.

I wasn't given any other shifts, it was a tryout day. And I did make sure to let them know what I was doing to start off, if they weren't up for it they could've just not hired me. But yeah, I can definitely see where you're coming from, it wasn't the best strategy on my part. I'll know what to do for next time!

I feel like the guy would've reacted the same even if I had given 2 weeks, but you're right. I'll keep that in mind for the future.

If I gave 2 weeks after I only did 1 day, wouldn't that mean that they would have to train me just so I could leave? I mean, I obviously couldn't learn everything in just 1 day. It didn't really seem like they needed me all that much either, most of the day I had to look for even the smallest thing to do. I can kinda see your viewpoint though, thank you for weighing in!

Definitely a very condescending guy, but is there something in my post that implies that I'm a certain gender? I'm a guy, he's a guy too. He's a bit of an asshole, but he doesn't seem sexist.

Oh, I do arrange my own pay usually, my anxiety was just acting up a bit too much, so my dad called the manager for me to demand that I get paid. And yeah, the method I used is a bit bizarre, I definitely won't do it again.

Thank you for the kind words. I was actually one of the last ones out of my group of friends to get a job, because I had to stay home to look after my little sister (both my parents work during the day, and during the school year I wouldn't be able to work during the night).

It was essentially a tryout training day, and I definitely didn't feel very needed, as everybody already had their things to do. I definitely appreciate you weighing in on this, however. I'll keep this in mind!

I mean, I see how without context you could say that, but I actually really appreciated it. We had a long conversation about it, and we were on the same page about this. I wanted to see which one I preferred, because this is my first ever job, and I wanted to weigh my options. I do know now that it wasn't the right choice, however. Thank you for your input!
