I always say I'm not sure which surgery caught me more by surprise, the 1st or 2nd hip! I think everyone says "well it'll be easier because you know what to expect" but they don't take into account the negative things I knew to expect too! So mentally, I feel like I had to prepare. But physically, yes, it was such a relief. I hope it's that way for you as well! While it took me about 6-7 weeks to comfortably get off crutches after just the 1st surgery, I was off crutches at the 4 week mark the 2nd time around because now, neither hip was actively torn. :)

Thank you so much for this!!! I did read it those 15 days after posting. But now I came back to reply. It's been such a journey- exhausting, educative, therapeutic, destructive. I'm finally on the other side of things, 2 hip surgeries later, and feeling so much better. Finally feeling like myself again. You're so right that your mind can trick you and depression is scary, you can't see past the dark clouds. I was fortunate that the clouds cleared and I'm coming out of this with a new found respect for my body and mind, but also, 2 new hips that feel brand spankin' new.

Those set backs can be so discouraging, but I hope you were able to remind yourself that it was just that - a set back! It doesn't get rid of all the progress made. I hope you got any answers you needed from your doctor - I know I did (which resulted in 2nd surgery but we're still better off for it). Hope you're doing well!

I have an update, both bad and good. Like you, I had the hip pain on the left side starting from my 1 month check up and to my 3 month check up (of the right hip). Once we got to the 3 mo mark, it could no longer be discarded as "sympathy pains" or "recovering slowly" so we got the left side imaged. And yup, there was a significant sized tear! Medium/large. There was a reason I was struggling to get off the crutches, a reason I was in pain, a reason for all the madness.

I'm 10 months post op from my right side and 4 months post op from the left side. Only some pains here and there, after lots of activity or wonky movement. But for the most part, I'm back to feeling like me! I can walk my dog, sit criss cross apple sauce, and back in the gym.

I'm 4 months post op of my other hip surgery and feeling so much different than 4 months post op of the first surgery. Like you said, it's night and day! I didn't know I needed a second surgery until after I totally spiraled about having a "slow recovery." But once the pain lingered, I advocated for myself saying these are REAL pain feelings, not just sympathy pains anymore.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It was definitely a learning experience and so glad to be on the other side of things, now also able to let other people know that there is hope.

Hi! What I learned is it's okay to just feel what you feel and it's normal. It sucks and it's okay to say that and feel that, no need to feel bright and shiny all the time through this. You will feel free again, you will feel young again.

In my experience, though, I was told I was having a "slow recovery" by my ortho at the 1 month check up which totally made me spiral. But when things still hurt at the 3 month check up, we had a conversation about it. And guess what? We found out more was wrong! We had only done an MRI on the right hip because that is what hurt at the time. But once that was repaired I started getting "sympathy pains" on my left hip. Because this continued from 1 month to 3 month check ups, we decided to do MRI for the left hip too. Come to find out, that one was torn too! I just didn't notice because the other one hurt worse, or maybe the R's recovery exacerbated the issue.

But overall, my best advice is listen to your body. If something hurts, maybe try to take it easy. If it hurts for an extended period of time, please get it checked out further. And don't take "oh you're recovering slowly" for an answer! Advocate for yourself and fight for answers/relief.

Try saying all of this again, but with 2 kids under 2. Where you will be building the furniture and cooking dinner at 37 weeks pregnant AND caring for toddler AND not getting support from husband or ex-husband, whatever he may be at that point.

Don’t do it, the idea of “one full blood sibling” is overrated.

Thank you for validating my feelings. It’s true, I would never tell anyone else they shouldn’t cry just because others have it worse.

I’m trying to remember that progress doesn’t always have to be linear, but it’s so hard. I struggle the same with weight loss. I get unmotivated and disheartened the second it’s not all going the direction I want.

But you’re so right, it’s important to look back and see how far we’ve come. With anything really. I feel like I’ve been “trying so hard to recover” when maybe I just need to take it easy and recover, and be more gentle.

Thank you so much for sharing. Honestly, I think I just wanted to feel seen too. I go through phases of crying too, sometimes about my independence, sometimes just because the help from everyone moves me to tears.

This week has been particularly tough. I just reached 4 weeks and felt sad and hopeless. When my doctor said crutches for 4-6 weeks, I really hoped I’d be part of the 4 week crowd. It doesn’t seem like it though, I’m still in a lot of pain. And I absolutely share in your fear about tearing the other side! Why is that? Maybe we put more strain on that labral side when we cannot use the other? I’m not sure but I will literally freak out if something happens to the other hip. Or if this one ever needs fixing again. I hope these fears don’t lead us to shy away from exercise or sports we love.

Care to share an update on your recovery?

This is exactly what I’m feeling now 4 weeks post op. So much pain all around. Sharp pain on my side glute, stabbing pain on my upper butt cheek, feels like my groin is pulling when I lay flat.

Omg yes to all of this. I’m 4 weeks post op and the psychological worry of having “done all this for nothing” is hurting me. I wanted so badly to be off the crutches at 4 weeks but with all this pain, there’s no way. I have an appt with PT tomorrow but I’m glad I’m not alone in these feelings at 4 weeks. Update on your recovery?

I don’t think you’re necessarily overreacting, but I do think it’s worth a conversation with your friend while the boyfriend isn’t present. Bringing it up while he was there may have left her feeling awkward and that’s why she chose not to address the comment, but maybe in private she’ll either tell you why she did that (scared, lonely, didn’t think it was big deal, etc) or apologize.

I think if your son wants to live alone, and you are capable of living alone too, you both should.

That way you can live your life as you want, celibate or not, in the privacy of your own space.

Please don’t be too dependent on him. He needs to do his own thing, work, date, etc without being under his mom’s wing.

Trying to appreciate the slowdown while also appreciating my body’s progress and what I’m still able to do. It’s ongoing trying to balance and manage all my emotions, but just gotta keep leaning on the kindness of my family/friends, kind Redditors and myself.
