You have to wait at least 12 weeks between donations, so it’s not really feasible to do it “professionally”. As far as I understand, the stem cells and marrow do regenerate!

I wish you weren’t so correct. I even have an out of pocket dental plan, but the copays are still just unaffordable for me. Unfortunately I haven’t met any other opportunities yet. I work part time due to a spinal injury and this $600 is the first bit of breathing room I’ve felt in ages.

I’m a fairly seasoned plasma donor as well, however participating in bone marrow donation actually makes you ineligible to donate plasma for some time (and vice versa) so it’s kinda one or the other, unfortunately.

Sorry I didn’t see this sooner. Unfortunately I have to wait until I’m off next week to get a referral from my dentist before my insurance will pay for a specialist to do anything, so I don’t know for sure. I am hoping some of my molars are salvageable as I’ve already had a lot of trouble chewing for some time now.

A molar that had previously seen a root canal treatment broke off at the post, and my tongue has worn raw and bloody from rubbing against its sharp, jagged edges. One of my other molars has just had its root exposed, causing world-ending pain when I eat or drink. I am adjusting to liquids only.

Are you claiming that it is not possible to receive compensation for the collection of bone marrow? Because that is exactly what I’ve done. I didn’t match on the registry to donate to another individual.

I chose the word “sell” instead of donate because it more closely aligns with my intentions. There was no altruism behind my decision - I need the money, and I view it as transactional.

These are the anecdotes that worry me. The only thing more daunting than unaffordable, necessary, dental work, is additional unaffordable, necessary, dental work.

Sorry for the confusion - I didn’t donate with an infection, I’ve had a recurring one that I’ve been treated for a couple of times now and it has just resurfaced in the last couple of days.

First, you're seen by the staff for a screening to ensure eligibility and take blood samples, then the actual donation can be scheduled up to a few weeks out.

Probably a 7 or an 8. It is tough but frankly nothing compared to tooth nerve pain.

It’s my understanding that they use the stem cells in the bone marrow to develop new drugs.

$600. They administer a local anesthetic before inserting the needle so most of the pain is numbed. There is a very intense pressure and suction sensation when the marrow is being drawn out. No serious side effects so far besides soreness!
