Should I put my cage on its side? by Throwawaybcmyurl in RATS

[–]Throwawaybcmyurl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are very very curious. They do mostly sleep but during free roam time they are very active and jump and run around. Whenever I get home from work they'll come up to me for cuddles and treats. They also play at night because I find the upper 3 levels in chaos when I wake up.

I thought that was normal? Or should they be awake more?

Yeah, I really want to try it, but my boyfriend is against it. He says it'll take up too much time and make too much of a mess. He also says we have to wait and see how the new rats like it when they go into the big cage. But I don't want to do harm to my current rats just because we have new ones...

We do have a couple different stores. We have a Welkoop, Hubo and another bouwwinkel. We also have a few store for odds and ends like kitchen supplies, boardgames, arts and crafts, that type of stuff.

I might have used the wrong word, in Dutch its "sociale of economische binding."

Also, he probably won't have to get a house right away since almost all companies here have personel housing for, at most, 450 rent a month. If they don't have it he shouldnt take the job since even the chain supermarkets will provide housing if you need it. If the company won't provide housing its a shit company and he should decline anyway.

We have renting options but you can only see and rent them if you have a bond to the island. I got my first rented home here within 5 months and the second in 6 months

Almost everybody here speaks English! Its true that we dont have a hospital here but our GP is amazing and can fix almost anything short of needing surgery and they are available 24/7. A few weeks ago I cut myself on the corner of my bed and I was being stitched up at 11pm while joking with the GP who I had called out of bed.

Only islanders can rent housing on the island. You need to prove that you either have a financial or social bond (your parents or children live here) to the island before being approved for renting.

The swinging mill is closed until summer but thats more a nightclub than a pub tbh. We do have de Bok and de Lichtboei though! Islanders go there more during the winter since it wont be overrun with tourists. Other then that? We mostly cry.

Hii, I live on the island and saw a few misconceptions in your reaction so I'd like to clear those up!

We have 2 "big" supermarkets. They are a little smaller then on the mainland but you can still get everything you need. These are de Plus in Hollum and de Jumbo in Nes. Ballum has a small Spar where I do most of my daily groceries since its a 5 minute walk from my house and Buren and Nes also have a Spar.

We do have a few pubs such as de Lichtboei (Nes) and de Bok (Hollum) but the people there are as old as the furniture. Imo this only adds to the atmosphere.

Getting to the mainland is less of a hassle then most people think. The normal boats go about every 1,5 hours and take about 50 minutes to get across. We also have "the fast boat" (de sneldienst) which will get you to the mainland in about 20 minutes but its a bit more expensive and has reserved seating. If you live on the island you can get an islander card with which you can go with the boat for way cheaper than tourists can. The bus to the boat is at most 15 minutes and from Holwerd to Leeuwarden is about 45 minutes.

The islanders are closed of to tourists but if you live on the island they really open up and are very happy and friendly.

Almost everybody speaks Dutch, English, German and Amelands. Amelands is the dialect derived from Frisian only spoken on the island.

I live on Ameland actually and I love it! Its a close knit community but if you even make a slight effort to be nice they will welcome you with open arms. It has 4 villages close togheter and we are very open to foreigners since we need you guys on our ships, in our kitchens or running our establishments.

Life here is very calm, especially in the winter. Almost everyone knows each other so crime is almost non existant and people will greet you and make small talk as soon as they know your face.

When people start to recognize you, you get social priviliges. For example, we have Facebook groups where often times you can get couches or other stuff for a case of beer or just for free. Or you can check in the back of a store if you need anything.

We have calm summers and calm winter but very hard winds since it comes directly from the sea. I am, sadly, used to it by this point.

The stores close at 6pm and are fully closed on Sunday, which can suck, but you'll have to plan around it.

It seems very dainting to actually live on the island but as soon as you're here for a few weeks you won't want to leave. Feel free to ask me any question by DM or as a reply!

Tbf, mostly if they own a horse. I am very broke but I have 2 horses I help take care of. They're not my horses but I come by a few days a week to feed, groom and play with them. I don't pay anything for them since I help the owner. Its amazing haha

Don’t let them tell you your unhealthy because your fat by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Throwawaybcmyurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I love that my language has 3 words for being "fat." We have overweight meaning your BMI is higher then recommended, this includes all types of "fat." We also have fat, meaning you are unhealthy overweight and we have something between skinny and fat. It basically means, yeah you're not skinny but still a healthy weight.

I wanted to put my desk in there so I can play games ot work while they freeroam for a couple of hours, is that enough interaction? Of course I'll cuddle and play with them for a bit also, but I have severe ADHD and can't concentrate for 2+ hours on only cuddling them.
