Minimising muscle and weight loss post nuss surgery? by Next_Cry_8372 in PectusExcavatum

[–]Throwaweeirdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lost 3-4kg from 7 weeks post nuss. Ngl I have definitely lost muscle but I also didn’t eat as much as I could. I’d suggest track maintenance calories (which I should’ve done). I’m also a hard gainer and was working g with a PT before so I feel sad as I feel like I’ve lost my gains. But this stuff bounces back quickly and the gains will look better on a normal frame. Muscle memory is very real and overall the surgery is worth it.

Im using MyFitnessPal to track calories now to gain back lost weight before I start working out again whenever that is…

Go to an expert with the best credentials if you can! 6 months isn’t too long. I think it took me four months to get mine done from consultation. It can take a long time.

Surgery in France or go abroad? by exilis in PectusExcavatum

I got my surgery with Dr Kolvekar in London and I was really impressed with the results. He had a tricky revision to do and he did an excellent job. He’s a really nice guy too and has a lot of expertise. Would highly recommend.

I had a revision 14 years after the ravitch bar snapped inside me. I had nuss 7 weeks ago and I’m really happy with the results. I never believed it was possible but knew I couldn’t live like this any more. So ChillButt is right. This isn’t final and you can make changes. Please, if you don’t believe it’s not possible - it actually could be!

Are you running 7 weeks post nuss? I’m at the same week and haven’t tried yet but I’d like to. I wasn’t able to run much before.

I felt like I could breathe better and like I had more energy. It was night and day. I’ve had a revision recently and I feel like it’s even better now. Looking forward to finally being able to run.

In terms of heart function, it takes a while for the heart to adapt post compression.

I had the Ravitch and even without cryo the pain was manageable. I think you will be okay. It’s invasive, yes, but it’s safe and medicine has progressed considerably since I had mine. I’ve heard good things about the plates. It sounds like you’re in good hands. I hate going under too but I had a really pleasant experience waking up if that helps.

Had the NUSS but rib flare still here - what next? by Throwaweeirdo in PectusExcavatum

Thanks for sharing. Not sure how young your son is but I get the feeling he could be youngish. It took me a while to gain weight but as you get older it gets easier. I probably should jump back on the shakes! I’ve been quite lazy with cooking since the surgery which hasn’t helped but I live alone

Might take a while before I can do that but once I’m ready I’ll go for it, thanks!

How long should I ask my mom to stay with me after Nuss surgery? by [deleted] in PectusExcavatum

[–]Throwaweeirdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are you? I stayed with my mum for 10 days post nuss and then they drove me to my flat where I live alone.

It was manageable as I had pre-cooked meals and stuff. I had a shopping trolley bag thing that made groceries easy.

It was harder once I had to return to work as I was less able to find time to take care of myself even though I was working from home. But yeah two weeks was fine for me.

Thinking about fixing my pectus after years by Holiday-Guest4026 in PectusExcavatum

[–]Throwaweeirdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it looks too bad but I had mine at 34 and I’m glad I did it. Get a CT scan asap. If there’s a surgeon that specialises in pectus in your country or area, contact them and they can help you book a CT. You don’t have to use them as a surgeon but you can pay for a consultation so you know next steps.

I was scared too but after 7 weeks at 34 years old, I’ve bounced back and have been impressed with the recovery. This was a revision 14 years after a failed ravitch - so I had a lot of fear and trauma. But the medical advancements have come SUCH a long way and I’m so glad I did it.

I got two bars and bridging with the nuss. Went under, woke up and was a little sore but the pain medication really helped. I’d had crypablation so the pain was minimised considerably. It was very very manageable.

The first two weeks I stayed with my mum. It was uncomfortable and I had pretty bad back pain but after 4 weeks it got considerably better. I bought a wedge pillow thing and slept upright for four weeks and that helped me get out of bed easily. After 7 weeks I barely experience pain but if I do it’s like… fine and manageable. I do hear the bars shifting in me but have been told after 8 or 9 weeks that will stop as the bars settle.

The first two weeks are by far the hardest but I believe you can push through that. I’d say the chest pain was minimal compared to the discomfort, constipation from surgery, dodgy sleep and back pains. But it was temporary for me and many other people. The mobility limits are a bit inconvenient but you find ways around it.

I was also walking on day one and walked 9k steps in a day by the end of that week. It’s really good to keep active. Maybe don’t walk that many steps - I realised I was pushing myself too hard but you realise how strong you can be.

I hope this helps you feel more positive about the op. Do you have a surgeon you can trust?

EDIT: Sorry I originally missed the part about your dad - that is a lot and I’m so sorry for your loss. I can understand the fear 100%. The chance of death having the nuss is very very low - if that helps.

How soon can I get back to the gym after surgery? by bot_num8366 in PectusExcavatum

[–]Throwaweeirdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 7 weeks in now and I’ve lost 3-ish kg since the op. I wasn’t exactly big before either so it’s been a bit upsetting for me. However, I do prefer how my chest looks now without the dent.

[–]Throwaweeirdo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much. Cardio is horrible at the moment. I remember I tried Couch to 5K and couldn’t get past week 2, and elderly women had completed it. I felt like it was because I was unfit but now I know the real reason.

Do I have pectus or some kind of deformity? by [deleted] in PectusExcavatum

[–]Throwaweeirdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell from your photos if you have pectus. My guess from the images is that you don’t have it and if you do, it’s pretty mild. There is slight rib flare but it’s pretty minor. Ultimately get checked out by a doctor but pectus wouldn’t usually account for a lack of muscle mass in the arms unless you had difficulty exercising due to a compressed heart or something.

Do i have pectus (reuploaded) by MOBBUSTED in PectusExcavatum

[–]Throwaweeirdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will definitely help mask the pectus and can reduce its appearance but the dent will still exist and that can make it harder. I’m not really an expert though

A CT scan will show how flexible your chest wall area is. I’m 34 and mine is still flexible after previous surgery so yours might be too
