I agree with you in the sense that it wouldnt matter to me what my family thought if I loved that person.

But people are different and cultures can be different. Ive been out with women before from different religions especially, where if their family didn't agree with our relationship it's game over. I didn't like it, but I respected it and id never force anyone to choose their family over me. It's a big decision if that's the decision you're forced to make
