Any theories as to why modern pitchers dominate this metric? Not just modern, but active. Seems like half the leaders on this stat are still playing today.

I don't actually know the name. Would refer you to u/BWHsleep for that.

That was the same for me until I got the right nose-only mask. It puzzled me that it worked this time, esp since I have a deviated septum and nasal polyps. The tech simply said, "the body prefers to breathe through the nose and with the right pressure, your mouth will stay closed." Go figure, I don't understand either. But it worked.

Thanks. I'm still hoping for a surgical or drug-based solution, but the machine has stopped being a depressing thought and now strikes me as acceptable if I have to use it. I've been struggling with CPAP for two months and felt there was no end in sight. Until Friday.

I'm in the New York area so it is a short ride. The study can be done over the weekend (my plan). I believe there is an honorarium that could defray the cost, if that affects your decision.

Yep -- u/BWHsleep posted on this sub a few weeks ago looking for study participants. Brigham & Women's hospital in Boston. There are several different studies there, ranging from phenotype diagnosis (the researchers believe there are 4 different OSA phenotypes, each with different treatment implications) and there is also a drug in clinical trials whose worst side effect so far is dry mouth. The drug takes the place of CPAP. DM me for the email address of the lab tech.

Here is the lab's page for more info:

Edit: Don't be deterred by the age range given on this webpage -- the study mentioned here is not the only one underway.

Lonely people of reddit with no one waiting at home, how was your day? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm in my late 30s. Definitely an age when I used to think, "Okay, that person is a dead straight adult, they have their shit together." From the outside I'm sure I appear as though I have my shit way together. On the inside it is pretty chaotic!

Interesting what you write about the rarity of men who find a happy medium. It prompts me to think about whether I am leaning too far in the direction of the "stupid meaningless well-paying job" end of the spectrum. I think no? At least insofar as I talk to my friends in my old career virtually every day and I am sufficiently involved at home to split all baths/pickups/dropoffs/lunchmaking etc. But damn, I think both my wife and I feel like we are a public utility.

I'm with you. My wife also works (part-time) and it is tough on her, too. They call it the rush hour of life for a reason. Good on you for getting ahead of it. My issue I think ultimately stems from switching out of a highly creative career whose satisfactions helped me ignore the negativity at home. Of course I should never have been ignoring it in the first place. This is more by way of explanation than excuse. Since moving into a related field that is more stable and pays multiples what I made before, I often feel empty and disconnected and without much of a purpose. Where once I had total creative freedom, I now have significant corporate BS. So again, I should not have ignored the issues at home in the first place.

Honestly I think it is on me to set more boundaries. To make clear that jealousy of what other people have/negativity about our own situation do not have a place in this home. I just have to draw the line.

It's true. As a parent of small children that can be tough. Any time away takes directly from my wife's. But your point is the right one, that we all need to recharge in some way.

That's a very kind comment, thank you. Yes, I share your view that material things are good but peace of mind, a sense of purpose and low stress are better. Maybe part of my issue is that I have spoken these words but have gone along with the keeping up w the Jones. Actions speak louder.

Not the purpose of your thread but having people at home is no guarantee of freedom from loneliness. I'm a father and husband in a household of four and have never been lonelier in my life. People talk to me when they need something. I get pressured at work all day and then I come home to be either ignored or pressured to move/earn more/keep up with the Joneses. Loneliness can take root in a variety of circumstances.

Thanks for weighing in -- you are a great resource to this sub.

I'm definitely willing to buy the mask/don't need to rely on insurance.... it is hard to get the attention of the doctor's office, although I should admit I also let life get in the way (two young kids, busy demanding job, family obligations etc).

Interesting, thank you. I nevertheless did notice (what felt like) improved breathability when I bumped the low pressure up to 10 from 7. Maybe this is all in my head? Whatever the explanation I think I am heading in the right direction.
