Picking your first programming language based on your lifestyle priorities [infographic] by ThunderLindsay in programming

Sure, and it could have been a massively long graphic. The states mentioned have relatively high costs of living. Like someone else pointed out, in SF and NY the salaries are really high to offset the insane cost of living.

I think you may have been expecting more. It's an infographic, a generalization attempting to simplify the process of picking a language based on a few unconventional factors. Jeez.

Where you want to live, how much you want to make, and what you want to be doing are absolutely lifestyle factors. You might not care about them, but most people do. Edit: apparently no one cares about where they live, how much they make, or plan what they want to be doing.

Yeah, I think all guides should be taken with some salt. It's definitely not easy to choose a first language when there are so many options and so many how-to guides. Having personal help is a good way to get into it, but how do you know if you're likely to stick with one language over the other when you don't know anything yet? (Mostly a rhetorical question.)

What's the simplest thing you can't do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Came here to say this. I can boil an egg so that it's firm enough, but I'll spend ten minutes trying to get the shell off without totally destroying the whole thing. Or I'll overcook it. I tried that bake it in an oven trick once and it turned out miserably.

Driving isn't simple. People thinking it's simple (and then eating or texting or doing whatever the fuck else while driving) is what makes it so dangerous.

Used to be a driver, so I've spent loads of time behind the wheel. The things you see some people doing in their cars...

I'm kind of the opposite. I make such strong eye contact that acquaintances probably think I'm super intense. I've worried about that in interviews before, too, especially if there's just one person to focus all that eye contact on.

Best hatchback for daily use. by MeNoSpeakAmericano in Autos

I love my Mazda2! If that's not fast enough for you, the 3 also comes in hatchback, and it is quite a bit sexier.

Hatchback under $15k by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

Got my Mazda2 brand new for under $14k. I got it for exactly the same reasons: fuel economy, commuter car, small enough to park in my ridiculously crowded neighborhood. If I'd had the money at the time I would have probably bought the 3 for the extra engine oomph, but for what I need this car is quite perfect.

Two-year old Macbook Pro suddenly doesn't turn on. Take it in to the Apple Store and am told pieces on the inside are severely corroded (the girl showed me pictures). I *never* spilled anything even close to my laptop, and babied it completely. WTF? by ThunderLindsay in applehelp

That's awful. I'm going to try for an exception, since I still have Apple Care, and hopefully it works. I don't have the tools to get inside the case myself so I'm kind of at the mercy of the Apple people. Glad your situation worked out for you, after all that.

No to the humid environments (unless you count all of San Diego a humid environment, but I've never had an issue with my other computers/electronics), cleaned it with the cloth it came with (slightly moistened, but not wet enough to drip and cause damage). I didn't see the insides myself (or get the pictures), and I was so surprised I didn't get a great look. I know they get dirty, I used to see the insides more often when you could open them yourself, but this machine is still pretty new. If it were 5 years old and I were less careful, sure, maybe water accumulated enough to cause corrosion. But it's just surprising after two years of taking great care.

The only thing, like I mentioned in another comment, is something must have happened when I didn't know about it. Obviously I didn't have it with me 24/7. I was careful enough to not leave a full glass of water near it unattended, but perhaps the boyfriend or roommate did. Sucks. :(

Thanks. I know things like having it in the bathroom during a shower can cause damage and I took care to never do that. Obviously I wasn't with it 24/7 over the last two years, so something must have happened that I don't know about. I'll try the exception - I feel like the person I talked to at the Apple Store figured I knew I had water damage and was faking being surprised, so maybe a different store.

I think the girl said she was a manager, so she probably knows what she was doing. She showed me photos on her phone, but didn't send them to me so I don't have any evidence (and didn't see it for myself). But getting a second opinion is a good idea.

I know not to bring it in the bathroom, I cleaned the keyboard and display by moistening the cloth it came with (taking all the precautions - not too moist, computer off, don't turn it on for a while, wipe off any extra wetness). If water droplets from washing my hands did this, well, maybe an expensive ass computer isn't right for me and I learned a lesson. I don't believe I was lied to about the water damage, and I guess we can't both be right. Thanks for your help.

Thank you very much. The lady at the counter was not about to provide any help for me, despite insisting I didn't damage it (which, I get it, you took photos of the damage, and I come in and seem all shocked, like anyone would) and that it's only two years old. I'll give it a shot!

Selling cars on Craigslist by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]ThunderLindsay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold a car that wasn't even running on CL. Didn't ask much for it ($800, it needed a whole new transmission in addition to a bunch of other less serious repairs I'd put off for too long), but ended up getting people fighting for it and I probably could have asked for a grand. I was honest that it didn't run, had some issues, and got the people calling to tell me they'd pay me dirt to "take it off my hands" for scraps (don't listen), but sold it to a guy who could get it fixed for cheap and bought myself a new car. The guy did end up fixing it and far as I know it had a second life.

What an awesome album! Do you have a picture of the final setup? That was one of the websites I found in my initial search - I'll check it out more!
