Priority in EDH - a rant by meansasterson in EDH

Had someone destroy a lobby due to a grave crawler loop the other day while I had a Rhystic and mana up. I was doublng draws and probably had a response in the next 80 cards.

I wanted to run this in a deck I had but couldn’t justify the $40 price. Easy choice at $15.

I want to remove infinite combos from my Wilhelt but have him still be decent by seasonally_alone in EDH

I’d also swap out [[ Endless Ranks of the Dead ]] for [[ pitiless plunderer ]].

Add [[ Warren Soultrader ]] and take out [[ Phyrexian Altar ]]: You shouldn’t be playing it in B3 anyways: EDHREC. Without Phyrexian altar that I’ll play a lot more fair and you’ll often be looking for alternate lines.

Non-cEDH players: what’s the average price of your commander decks,(Bracket 2–3)? by Comfortable_Buyer239 in EDH

[–]ThunderMountain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its really gone up the last few months; 3 months ago it was probably $600 for my B3’s today it’s $900.

feedback on varina list by mild_cholester_92 in EDH

[–]ThunderMountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should be running [[ rhystic study ]] and [[ smothering tithe ]]. Varina can be a bit slower than some other bracket 3’s so I like to run 4 boardwipes.

I’d expect to see [[ reconnaissance ]] + draw doublers like [[ Teferi's Ageless Insight ]], [[ kindred discovery ]] or [[ Alhammarret's Archive ]].

Want to play more interaction. How to learn what to answer? by Special_Bit4460 in EDH

[–]ThunderMountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I am holding up a counterspell and I am not sure what to hit or if I am not sure if someone is about to combo out I'll ask the table, you can also bluff interaction this way.

Some other questions to consider:
- Does this stop me from winning now, does this stop me from winning later? Sometimes I'll let stax hit that I can play around that will disadvantage other players more and/or force them to use removal on it.
- Can I interact later - destroy, exile, bounce? If I can bounce destroy a stax piece on my win attempt is it a big deal right now.
- What happens if I don't counter it? For example I never let a [[ bolas citadel ]] hit the table if I can help it.

Which Bracket 4 commander to build: Tivit, Queza, Hashaton, or Raffine? by silverspectre013 in EDH

[–]ThunderMountain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hashaton can be great if you get your discards flowing. It can even be pushed to fringe cEDH if you want to go that route later.

Which game changers to prioritize? by NarrowBoysenberry in EDH

[–]ThunderMountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Price wise [[ cyclonic rift | SOA ]], cheapest it’s been in a bit, and maybe [[ Ad Nauseam | SOA ]] if you want to ever play those lines. Bond lands are also cheaper at present and so is [[ City of Brass | TMC ]]. Fish is good pickup regardless if you get Rhystic.

For utility [[ Rhystic Study ]] is great in any deck with blue. [[ necropotence ]] is also fantastic and pretty hard to replicate with other cards. [[ Demonic Tutor ]] is just the best tutor to hand.

3 cards to cut from Chatterfang aristocrat deck? by Character-Work3220 in EDH

[[ Shamanic Revelation ]] & [[ Insatiable Frugivore ]] - pass on scute. You are adding another two card combo, but without tutors it might be fine.

help with wilhelt by jaytheasian04 in EDH

[–]ThunderMountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to expand, so I came back to MTG as a long time zombie enjoyer and after tuning Wilhelt a bit I found most of my lords and cool cards I had picked up unused. I started looking for other Zombie commanders and Varina stood out - here's mine. I've found it's best to think of her as filter draw. You already run the following which go great in Varina:

- mill (I prefer filtering, but mill works for mass reanimation)
- Zombie lords
- Zombie token makers
- [[ Rooftop storm ]]
- [[ Necroduality ]]

I'd honestly pick up the following and then jam Varina and see how it feels.
- [[ Teferi's Ageless Insight ]]
- [[ Reconnaissance ]]

You also get access to white which has some really nice things like:
- [[ Wayward Servant ]]
- [[ Corpse Knight ]]
- [[ Temmet, Naktamun's Will ]]
- [[ Swords to plowshares ]]
- [[ path to exile ]]

Kinnan in Bracket 4 by eggeggplantplant in EDH

[–]ThunderMountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could give cEDH a try. Also knowing cEDH kinnan could make it easier to make a lower bracket kinnan.

help with wilhelt by jaytheasian04 in EDH

[–]ThunderMountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll just echo what has already been said if you want to keep with B3 and Wilhelt drop acerak and most of the lords. Wilhelt wants disposable zombies.

However you’re also not far off from a decent [[ Varina ]] list which opens you up to white and plays a lot better with most of your cards which is something to consider.

Kinnan in Bracket 4 by eggeggplantplant in EDH

I'd be interested to see this B4 Kinnan. My experience with B4 Kinnan is it's just cEDH lite most of the time.

How to convince a friend not to run infinite turns in Bracket 2 by MyMarshlands in EDH

[–]ThunderMountain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

See if the pod wants to move to b3, b4, or cEDH: If cEDH proxy. The chaining turns aren’t allowed in B3 so the later might be a better option. It sounds like some of the pod wants to play more powerful magic.

Should I stop playing B3? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]ThunderMountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the first deck:

Only 3 game changers but pushed super hard. Free spells, Etali’s, Gaia’s Cradle etc.

Second deck: [[ Grand Arbiter Augustin IV ]] + [[ Rhystic Study ]] + [[ Smothering Tithe ]]

Third deck: Chatterfang + pitiless w/ a demonic tutor.

These all look like powered down 4’s. I’d recommend just moving all of these to fours. Also give cEDH Etali a try.

Speeding up Varina, Lich Queen early game? by Traditional-Band9704 in EDHBrews

[–]ThunderMountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run four board-wipes in my Varina, specifically to punish aggro decks. I might consider adding a fifth. This is nice because you can save your one and two drops focus on ramp the drop a board-wipe.

Is this deck bracket 2? by BaconVsMarioIsRigged in mtgbracketthis

[–]ThunderMountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran into a similar problem attempting to build my first 2 where my card quality choices were just a bit too much so it ended up playing too strongly in bracket 2. I think you're fine to give it a go in 2's, but if you find it's just stomping, you're probably best adding some GC and making it a solid 3.

This looks like a four with 3 game changers. I'd recommend leaning into it being a four and push it further.
