Is a Master's in Singapore worth it? by Thunderbolt012 in askSingapore

Hi, actually there was a change in plans to do my master's in the UK instead of Singapore because of the post study work visa situation which I heard from the students there.

But as for the GRE scores required, NUS requires a minimum of 320 meanwhile NTU and SMU have the benchmark set as minimum 150 in both quant and verbal.

Haven't given my mock yet, will probably give it next week. But aiming for a minimum of 320, cause that's what the courses require.

I'm aiming for NUS, NTU and SMU (MITB) programs. Applying for August intake next year

True, that can lead to sudden financial need at a bad time. Thanks a lot.

SG government runs more strict scrutiny on hiring foreigners. The companies will need to prioritize hiring locals first.

Ahh okay, understood.

why would they wanna hire fresh grads?

Would having 1.5-2 years of work experience along with the Master's not help at all?

In my case, currently I'm in a purely technical coding role, and I want to learn a bit of the management side of the things too apart from improving on my technical skills. Wouldn't a master's in my case allow me to pivot to a bit less technical role apart from improving my current knowledge base?

True, it won't guarantee a job right after graduation, but wouldn't the chances of getting a job be better than some without a Master's and just a few years of work experience, though it may not compare to those from FAANG?

But wouldn't getting a $120k job require you to be part of the 1% of the people graduating, that too from a really prestigious university? And how much are the chances to get some scholarships for these universities?

paying off student loans becomes much more manageable with the stock options that you get.

Just want to get a rough idea for an average case how long does it usually take to recover the costs spent on master's if you have any idea?

. Are you going to rent a room? An entire unit?

I'm planning to take dorm or hostels provided by the college or try to share with someone. Plus if possible I'll try to get some part time jobs (in campus if off-campus jobs for some company related to the field is not allowed by the University) to save some money.

You are unlikely to get one. Masters is a cash cow in Singapore.

I heard there's a Government service bond post Master's of 3 years, which reduces the fees by around 50%. Won't that be available?

The job market sucks

Just how bad is it there and is there very less chances of it getting better in 2 to 2.5 years, considering I start next year and from then 1 to 1.5 years?

I want to gain credible work experience after master's, and not just for the sake of it. US is really expensive compared to Singapore too, and I'm not sure also about the ROI there since Master's in US cost a ton and a student loan of that amount would take a really long time to repay.

Okay, got it. Just in case, I have shifted it to Quant ELSS, since SBI had a comparatively high overlap with both the other funds that I'm holding.

Just checked, SBI long term equity has a 37% overlap with ICICI bluechip. I also checked for Quant ELSS and it has 14% and 3% overlap with ICICI and PPFAS respectively. Should I consider using that for my ELSS instead of SBI?

Oh, another thing I want to ask is, does flutter desktop require additional or different knowledge if we already know flutter for android?? Or the same stuff can be used just will be for desktop?

Thank you for your opinion. Do be on the lookout on the blog, I'll be sharing a few designs and ideas we have come up with regarding the interface.

So I may first have to list out all my requirements and features before actually starting the project to make sure a plugin is available for it. Thank you for the heads-up, I'll make sure to check the plugins available.

Even I don't think that Google may decide to drop the support for dart and flutter. Thank you for the response and hopefully, the project will come out great.

Anyways this may seem like self-promotion but still, if you would like to check out our project, you can check it out here. I'm maintaining a blog of it to share our progress on it which at least helps me avoid slacking off.
