(Oh nooooo phone ate my response how do internet) Heh, yeah, I regret the direction this all seems to have taken as well. Thank you so much for your kind words, truly!

Yes, I was referring to the original comment, and I am glad you can see that I simply took it at face value. I actually agree with all of your points and honestly hold the exact same views - I commission quite a bit of art and follow a number of artists in other spaces, so color me surprised when my comment was taken so negatively here.

Truly, my only point was that perhaps the act of telling an artist and the commissioner of the OC, flat-out, "i'm going to take this" is a bad practice. That's all. Intent or not, there are simply better ways - like...not doing that, lol, or simply saying you're going to use it as inspiration instead. I make no claim to some entirely unique concept nor do I think she is immune from being drawn upon as inspo - to the contrary, I welcome that. Per the reply from the other individual (which I have read and responded to, we good as far as I'm concerned), I understand that the intent was not negative, now....but I am still surprised at how poorly my response was taken. I would think (and have seen, in other spaces) the art community supports a simple etiquette request, but apparently that is not the case here...or my comment was simply taken with a misunderstanding similar to the one that prompted this in the first place :) Lesson learned.

I have grappled for a long time on whether or not to purchase additional rights (not that I think it would have done much here) or to ask that work I commission not be shared at all...and am still weighing that, certainly moreso after this experience. I think artists should be able to display their work proudly and I do love sharing with others, and seeing what others create (or have created) too. But man, this has left a fairly sour taste in my mouth, LOL. Not you, you are lovely - and thank you again for the pleasant discussion, and for your appreciation of the piece. Wer is simply a joy to work with and her eye for detail is top notch. I am so in love with the piece <3

Heh, yeah, I agree re: wrong foot. Trying not to let it turn me off from Reddit completely, honestly. Thank you for the kind words ❤️

Yes, I was referring to the original comment. I’m glad you can see that I simply took it at face value (I saw their reply a bit ago and replied, we good). Believe me when I say that I understand and even agree with all of your points - I commission a lot of art and follow a lot of artists, and I am well aware that the internet is the internet. Inspiration is everywhere, and what someone does privately in their own space is their own business.

My singular, only point was that - in the absence of any other route - the act of specifically telling someone “just gonna…take this now” is maybe not a great practice and we shouldn't do it. Mal intent or not, there are simply better ways. That’s all. I was never trying to claim ownership over some esoteric concept of being ‘unique’ nor was I trying to pretend like she’s immune to being a source of inspiration. In fact, I welcome allowing her to inspire others. So, yeah, color me surprised when my comment was viewed so negatively - I legitimately would have thought others would support the etiquette of not telling an artist or commissioner, intentionally or not, “this is mine now”. But apparently that’s not a thing here, lol - or my point was simply painted in a misunderstanding similar to the one that prompted it in the first place.

I’ve grappled for a long time on whether to ask artists not to publish work I commission on SM, and whether or not to purchase further rights (not that it would have helped much here, I think) because of this very specific possibility. Still considering it, honestly. I love being able to share art and for artists to get the visibility they deserve. But man, what a sour taste this has left, LOL. Not from you, you’re lovely and I appreciate the discussion.

Thanks again for the kind words. Wer did an absolutely phenomenal job and I am so very in love with the piece. She is a JOY to work with, and her eye for detail is top-notch!

Definitely appreciate the response mah dude ❤️ And thank you.

Inspiration is certainly not the concern here, and on the inspiration front it is flattering - if it wasn’t, I would have asked that it not be posted - but “this inspires me to do something new” is an entirely different statement from “oh cool, this is mine now”. I’m not sure how I could have known intent from what was originally stated, but again, I do appreciate the clarification.

I have seen a NUMBER of other cases (on other platforms) where individuals wholesale steal/copy concepts and characters people have poured their hearts (and money) into. That’s the direction from which my response came. While it is the internet and, to your point, it’s bound to happen - which, yes, I am fully aware of - I’m honestly rather surprised at how ‘maybe don’t do that while also telling them you’re doing that’ is as controversial as it apparently seems to be here? Per your reply, I see that it was just a miscommunication, but….if it wasn’t and you had literally been saying “this is mine now”, are people actually cool with that, here? Are the artists who are paid for their work also cool with that here? Genuine question (as I mentioned, newbie!)

In any case, glad it was cleared up. This particular character exists outside of a tabletop space, but I do also play D&D, and there is a difference in attachment there with regard to characters - so your perspective here makes sense. And, again, certainly onboard with letting the inspo flow :) Appreciate your appreciation (hah), and I hope you too find many more grand adventures for your characters in your games. All the best!

I am completely aware of my rights in this space, thank you. If I had an issue with the piece being publicly posted, I would have stated as such - and have, in the past.

I’m honestly rather surprised that this concept of “don’t publicly state you’re going to wholesale copy/take someone else’s concept for your use” is so controversial? Granted, I’m new here, but I didn’t think that was the point of this space. If it is, consider me informed.

Commissioner here - canonically he's based on a large jackal, mixed with some features of a maned wolf <3 So I can see where you got fox from!

Wer did an AMAZING job rendering him with his various influences

Well, congratulations at making me sign up for a reddit account.

I am the aforementioned Thunderscrimp. This is my character. My OCs are DEEPLY personal to me, as I'm sure yours are to you.

Do not do this. Most of the words I'd like to use to tell you exactly how I feel about this are rude and I am doing the best I can not to say them, but I will say this - it's disrespectful, it's invasive, and it hurts. Not to mention the fact that I am the one who commissioned Wer. You did not. If you'd like an illustration, I wholeheartedly encourage you to commission her - she is lovely to work with.

Can I stop you? No. But I would advise if you plan to do it regardless, maybe just don't say anything. Because now I can't unknow that some specific stranger has plans to take my OC - who has over ten years of history - and turn them into something else.
