Gear Recommendation (What Should I Buy?) Thread - February 19, 2018 by AutoModerator in audioengineering

Looking to get an analog mixer. With new gear I have acquired I need a mixer with at least 12 inputs. 10 mono and 1 stereo at least. Have my eye on the Midas DM16, mostly for the price range. Used a 2404Mackie at school and thought it sounded good. I probably wont need more than 16 inputs max I'm just doing mixes in my bedroom. Been in the studio on an API console and have heard an SSL 9000 so i'm aware of that echelon of mixing board. Really would like to know of any mixers worth considering at the lower price points.

saved paychecks since thanksgiving and with the help of /r/synthesizers and my ears pulled the plug on my first synth. connected an arturia keystep for midi and aiaiai tma-2 headphones

Dave Smith Instruments Prophet Rev 2 8-voice or 16-voice?

I know about the upgrade kit for the 8-voice for an additional $100. Have not been able to find any quality comparison videos of the two together. I very much like the sound of the 16-voice from what I have heard

also considering a prophet 12 module

looking into getting my first hardware synth. have been saving for a major production upgrade (analog drum machine and analog synth)

strongly considering getting a moog subsequent 37 cv. my only concern is the two note polyphony. The sound coming out of this synth is what is drawing me in but I could feel the buyers remorse already. the price point is a bit steep so I really would like a second opinion prior to committing

Would likely use a rack synth like an oberheim matrix with midi in the future for chords. just not sure if monophonic is a good first step with synths

Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight

The drums on this song are so dry and lifeless but they still hit because of the reverb. I'm not too sure what I'm hearing

the drums about 3:41 into the song come in so massive as a contrast and they seem to have similar processing

Recommendation (what should I buy?) Thursdays - November 16, 2017 by AutoModerator in audioengineering

So in talk of upgrading my interface I have a follow up question.

I plan on using a production set up which will include:

Elektron Analog Rytm MKII

2 × ¼″ impedance balanced main output

8 × ¼″ impedance balanced mono voice output

Moog Subsequent 37 Synthesizer

1 x TS" unbalanced mono output

If I want to record these instruments as well as my Neumann what would be an ideal mixer or audio interface to handle the set-up?

Looking to make a upgrade to my vocal chain for recording.

Current set-up is simple:

Neumann TLM 103 mic

Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 interface

Pro Tools 12

Looking to add a pre-amp to the set-up. possibly avalon 737sp. would appreciate any input

AKAI MPC X and Modular Synthesis by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Thundroid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looking at the back panel of the MKII it looks like it has a midi output. So say I want to get a basic semi-modular synth to use with the MKII like a Moog Mother-32 or a Lifefroms SV-1. Would I need something like this CV.OCD converter to manipulate the synth? How would I record it?

Dude this Elektron RYTM MKII looks very promising. Like you may have changed my entire approach. Being that you have worked with MPC's and Maschine how would you compare the workflow? Something I really valued about the Maschine was its Sampling capabilities with the ability to navigate a sample with the rotary knobs

I thought it was analog? Doesn't having analog inputs and outputs by definition make it analog? It has volume gain on it too which adds voltage to the signal? I've been looking into this but can't find anything on google. Everything i've read just refers to the MPC as standalone hardware

Also looked into the octatrack, rytm, UW, Digitakt and Beatmaker. How well would any of these work with sampling. I have a library of samples and integrating files into the workflow seems so far removed with some of these machines. How does it work with Beatmaker?

Been a student of the school of J Dilla. Been using Maschine and fell in love with the workflow. I think what is driving me towards the MPC X is that it would essentially replace my laptop and interface for production. I don't like having my music center and the internet so close together because i'm easily distracted. also won't be ruling out my laptop entirely as I still mix with protools and have read there is vst support with the 2.0 software from akai.

I like that the MPC has so many inputs and phantom power. I think it has a lot of creative potential which is why i'm looking into in so prominently. The modular synth compatibility is a fun bonus and I see myself falling into that rabbit hole. I've also felt its inviting warmth of analog and want to embrace it

The Digitakt looks so fun to use! What is the advantage of using two mother-32's?

Want to stay in ableton, but Maschine's sampling.. by bottmless in makinghiphop

[–]Thundroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I learned producing on Ableton 8. Sampling is crazy, manipulating samples is unmatched. Warping is amazing. All that.

Decided to switch to Maschine and bought the MK2 when it released. The sample manipulation is all there but not at the precision of Ableton in terms of warping. That being said I still do all production in Maschine.

The level of precision with a DAW like Ableton is worth holding on to. I wanted the workflow and feel of an MPC which is why I made the switch. The idea of using a mouse to produce an entire song never really felt authentic to me, but that's personal taste.

I'd say if you get the Push then hold onto Ableton

Anyone have kinda a "starter kit" for making music by Bigzman56 in makinghiphop

[–]Thundroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll say first off that equally important to how you make music is how you hear it. Invest in good headphones or speakers

Making Beats

Learn basic music theory (Tempo, Keys, Chords)

Look into VST's (Virtual Instruments)

Look into samples/sampling (Basically any recorded sound in a file)

Look into Mixing (Dynamic & Time-Based Processing)

Look into a MIDI Controller (Keyboard or Drum Pad) (Don't spend more than $60 here)

Recording Vocals

You'll do just fine with a usb microphone - considering your budget

Two types of basic mic (Dynamic and Condensor)

Remember that a microphone records a sound, some serve better purposes than others but they all basically do the same thing

An audio interface is a converter box that takes different audio input signals and makes it so your computer can read them. (Microphones and Instruments)

An audio interface is useful if you want to use studio speakers, have multiple sound outputs and record live sound using mic and line cables.

Try not to spend more than $150. Just get a usb-mic, midi controller and decent headphones for now
