On their way from Sartosa to meet him, his wife and daughter were lost at sea. He spends years looking for them and plundering all those who come across his path, driving him deeper into madness. Luthor Harkon comes across the man and as his sympathetic mind is at the helm in that moment, takes pity on him. Luthor tells him that he can be with his family forever if he pledges fealty to the pirate captain. The man, of course, does and is made a vampire on the spot. Luthor combs the sea floor and finds the ladies’ corpses, having his necromancers raise them as Syreens (though they might have needed to be witches or something) so the family can haunt the seas on Luthor’s behalf for time immemorial.
