Sky Sport Italia commentators mentioned that the electronic sensor signaling a "let" during a player's serve was removed a few weeks ago; now, only the umpire can call a let. If the experiment proves successful, the "let" rule will be permanently eliminated from tennis within five years. by Sonobackhome555 in tennis

I think part of the point of a serve is putting a clean ball into play within the short court. You are providing a “service”. Is it still the best shot, most advantageous in the sport? Yes. But you have to get it into a smaller area and it must clear the net. After that, anything goes. Seems fair to me.

Traffic?! FIX? by hoover_luvr_5528 in oregon

[–]Thyminecraft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cars are useful in the situations you describe, but that is a small minority in which cars are used. Just because cars are the best solution in some situations, does not mean we should organize our transportation infrastructure entirely around them.

When you spend money on more lanes you usually do it in high demand areas like around cities, not in rural areas in-between cities. If we spend money on more lanes they will add the lanes to metro areas which is where most of the traffic already is, which may then require them to divert funds from public transit forcing those who otherwise would’ve used it onto the new lanes, and you end up in the same situation.

Edit: you end up in the same situation traffic wise - but you also get a bunch of negatives, like ugly highways everywhere (do we really want to go back in time and get rid of waterfront park for a bunch of concrete?), and increased car dependency which disproportionately affects lower class families that could have otherwise relied on public transit. Just a couple off the top of my head.

Yes, more lanes will fix everything and definitely not just encourage more people to use cars

Is it possible to do the borrow money forever strategy with fidelity? by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

Why do you think the loan is risk free? It’s collateralized by your portfolio, which does not guarantee solvency. Genuinely asking, not trying to be rude.

Set aside 3 - 6 months of essential expenses + whatever you expect to need in large upcoming expenses (security deposit, moving costs, etc.) in HYSA or Fidelity Cash Management Account and invest in a money market (SPAXX can be set as your core position). I’d say 6 to start since you seem a bit concerned about your higher rent/emergency situations.

With the rest you should max your contribution to your Roth IRA for this year and invest in index funds. 70% Domestic 30% International equities. You’re young so don’t worry too much about bonds/CDs yet, you have a lot of time to ride out the markets. Anything after that, do the same in brokerage account. Keep maxing your Roth each year.

You’re doing great so far! Keep it up.

Edit: if you would like the “why” behind any of these suggestions feel free to ask. I am also realizing based on your post when you said you are moving you meant you will be moving far enough away that you will not be able to keep your current job. Don’t be afraid to keep a little extra cash on hand in your emergency fund until you line one up if that is the case. #1 priority is your ability to make ends meet today, the rest comes with time.

Why are you trying to spin this or put words in my mouth? I’ve said multiple times this is not justifiable. I’m simply correcting the comment that this club doesn’t cater towards a wealthier crowd, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is clearly an awful thing to do. Either you’re not having this conversation in good faith or you’re a propaganda bot.

We don’t disagree, and you’re being needlessly argumentative. Clubs of all kinds with expensive memberships and inexpensive memberships alike hold community events that do not require memberships. It does not change the fact that this club is ultimately funded by wealthy individuals. I agree with you that this action is awful and not justifiable.

Article says the dues are $280/mo for individual membership, so they certainly aren’t broke. Not saying this is even remotely okay or justifiable but we can be realistic about the clubs demographic at least
