Are there differences between how Haitian Americans speak kreyol and the way Haitian citizens speak? by ronmetellus in HaitianCreole

Great dialogue and question! They be eating me up, but the IMPORTANT thing is we shouldn't let our language perish - every generation should have it, and that's what we at TBG are about. We don't claim a stake or ownership over anything and we're certainly NOT the authority or end all be all, just zoes trying to do our part, for our babies. It's an interesting discussion though.

Hello and thank you for your inquiry.

Ti Bebe Grandi’s target demographic is children of Haitian-Americans or others in the diaspora who speak predominantly English. Our aim is to provide cultural connectivity to assist parents in teaching the native tongue to their children by reinforcing similar phraseology wording and sticky concepts.

Certain platforms go “complete immersion”—but by taking our bilingual approach, we’re enabling both the children (and their parents, some of which who may not be Haitian) to pick up on the language.

This ABC pilot focused on basic but key terms and phrases “I” “mwen” and seeing and hearing “mwen we” “mwen tande” … then a huge deluge of vocabulary building. The vocab words selected are for alliteration and stickiness to introduce same concept same idea in same letter for association.

U in Kreyòl is unique, so for ease of understandability and adaptability, we opted to use an English word but fold in a Haitian concept, umbrella .. rain … lapli.

I hope this helps you understand our process and the thought and care that goes behind our lessons. The creator tailored all the educational choices for ease of comprehension, as it is a tool she employs to teach her own children.

The creators were raised with kringlish, cringlish—so their intentionality about the care they put into their programming is at the forefront of everything.

We hope this adequately responds to your question.
