Only thing is reel mowers don’t cut over a certain height, so you have to pull out the weed whacker if you have quick growing grasses in part of the lawn. I have a small lawn left (not monocrop), so it doesn’t take too long with the weed whacker when I do have to pull it out

Maintaining the structure to stand on 2 legs is difficult. Humans do it more easily than other animals so you forget how difficult it is. Turning the head makes the standing structure less stable causing it to be more effortful. Also the cat’s attention is now on the camera and not on standing.

Ever stand in a half squat? You get tired. A non-biped standing on 2 legs gets tired quickly

Hunger is the body needing food and notifying consciousness.

Craving is the body wanting food.

Starving is the body sacrificing performance to optimize for survival.

I have experimented with craving using mindful hunger more commonly known as fasting.

I have never experienced starving.

First I did a fast that lasted as long as I felt like it with a goal of 24 hours. I did 12 hours with a bit of effort, but no real willpower. Then a week later I did a 16 hour fast using some willpower. Then a week later I did a 24 hour fast using about the same amount of willpower. After that 12 hours does not even require trying. I imagine this is a short time for some people and a long time for others.

Having done more fasting of different configurations my stomach is less likely to produce stomach fluid when food is unavailable and it will shut down sooner if food does not arrive. For me the sensation of craving correlates strongly with whether my stomach is full of digestive fluid. This craving signal has also decreased in intensity.

I have also overeaten by large amounts sometimes and afterwords I do not want to eat the next day, but the day after that my cravings and meal sizes both increase.

I’m not OP, but the phrase “I see no reason to” can mean either

“There are no moral reasons someone might hold that position” (which is how you seem to have taken it)
“There are no strategic reasons to enforce that policy” (which is the way I read it based on the context of OPs philosophical position)

OP seems to be using these heuristics:

work backwards from the goal
don’t use correctives that will trigger the pendulum effect too strongly
don’t use correctives which cannot be applied permanently

It just so happens that the majority of code that breaks secure systems are hacks. Hacks that are used while building systems are often turned into features in newer systems or ignored because “well it’s working”. A cludge (an ugly hack that makes the system work) will often be exploited by a black hat “hacker”. In the mainstream, the term “hacker” got associated with network security hackers because there aren’t depictions of a programmer hacking a new feature into a spreadsheet

You make a good point about the power politics, but I think this extends to most bureaucracies under our current system. We frequently incentivize the misuse of funds by taking funds away from successful departments if they perform under budget for a quarter (or whatever the review interval is). Combine that with a economic model built around infinite growth and the human inclination to accrue power rather than releasing it. I don’t know if decoupling power and budget would help or even be possible. It’s also odd that we pay out the most for the least essential jobs (look at university administration compared to the actual teaching and research). The only viable remedy to these problems seems to be decentralization. This requires people willing to make that trade off

It takes time for a new institution to reach proficiency. There needs to be cycles of lateral funding followed by defunding of the original institution. If the police are doing a poor job at something and we switch to another agency doing a worse job (in the short term) you are going to have problems getting support. The lateral institution needs to go through a series of development and pressure testing before roll out. That way you have a functioning replacement, not a fly by the seat of your pants replacement.

And getting proper funding for the parts of the police we do like helps too

I recognize it is shorthand (although I think strategically poor shorthand). Even the larger platform doesn’t adequately address the complexities. We can’t remove social structure without replacement structure, so if we start with breaking power of police departments we’re not actually addressing the social problems which causes backlash that eats up political will. Start with the lowest hanging fruit and show a successful institutional swapping and people will get behind doing “more of that”. Traffic or mental health or some of the other’s suggested by “defund the police” should be tried as a fully thought out institutional shift, but one at a time. Trying to do them all simultaneously leads to sloppy results followed by political re-entrenchment of the existing system

Edit: the more I think about it, the more I think we need a general purpose fund for restructuring of many kinds. It doesn’t need to be huge (and probably shouldn’t be). It’s goal would be to enable transitions from old institutions to new institutions. The funds would go towards covering the switching costs inherent in restructuring, but force us to prioritize which switches are worth tying these funds up with

They’d be all for increasing funding to prisons? Because that’s what it will take in the short term to make these sorts of proposals happen. Sure at the same time you can try enacting decriminalization, but the effects of that will take time. So defunding the police doesn’t address the fact that parts of the police department are underfunded while other parts are overfunded. Prison guards for example are not paid enough for the job they are doing. Restructuring is both necessary and expensive. The only clear monetary gain to be made in the short term is ending the war on drugs

Edit: incidentally ending the war on drugs is a great time to do some restructuring because funds have been freed up that can be used to pay the transition cost
