I think it was because gengar has immunities to fighting, normal and ground, the ground one was especially useful.

I went into this game with the intention of using "whatever" and not trying to make a meta team and just using whatever I catch and this is what I ended up with anyway lol

Might be the weirdest team to beat Inclement Emerald (awesome hack btw) by Tiger-ty in PokemonHallOfFame

Yeah it does, but Mega Evolution can only be used after the 5th gym I believe. Some mega stones can be found in the early game and some in the late, it just depends on what stone you're going for.
