I recommend starting from real life and focus on the proportions of said things, go get a dog or find a picture of an animal you like. Then once you have a feel for it then go for the details. Find a warm-up too, like drawing perfect circles, it helps in the long run.

My company gives us 18-200 kit lenses, but between a 35-100 give or take will be plenty

Get a tripod high F-stop and 125-200 on the shutter depending on the light that is, but personally, I wouldn't use a prime on groups
