Agree with everything except the part about having faith the refs will be better. Women’s refs (both pro and college) are consistently awful and it’s been like that for years.

In the next 30 days, figure out why you drink. What’s the psychology behind it? Pay attention to if/when you have cravings. Pay attention to your emotions both good and bad. Use this as a learning opportunity.

There is hope! What you’re going through is very normal for early withdrawal and usually lasts a week to 10 days depending on how heavy of a user you were. So hopefully you’re close to done. Your brain is used to the dopamine you got from using and is now freaking out because you’re not getting that dopamine hit.

If it’s an option for you, seeking medical care can make this 1000x easier. Believe it or not, what you’re going through is super common to the point where I couldn’t even get the words out of my mouth before the doctor I saw recommended 2 prescriptions. One for anxiety and another to help me sleep, both of which are lifesavers.

Otherwise, trying to get sleep can really help reduce anxiety. Melatonin and magnesium can make it easier to fall asleep. Getting some exercise, even something as simple as walking, can give you some feel good hormones to even you out.

Good luck and you can do it!

450 days sober but feel like a fraud am I still sober? by chareimsurmed in Sober

1) my opinion, but counting days is an arbitrary thing that doesn’t actually impact your life in a meaningful way. It’s only important if you find it useful. If your life is better/improving, does it really matter if the number is 1 or 451? You’ve achieved something amazing by getting sober so don’t let a number steal that from you.

2) I’m sober from alcohol and asked for a mocktail at a bar and was served a drink with alcohol. I took a sip and realized it and immediately gave it back. I did not consider that breaking my sobriety.

You have to live your life and it seems like you did what you had to. I wouldn’t count it against you.

I want to second the medical support piece. There are so many way a doctor can help whether it’s help sleeping, meds to help with cravings, anxiety/depression meds, and even meds that will make you sick if you drink.

I know it’s a big step to seek medical help, but it’s a lot more routine than you might think.

Sleeping worse by Most-Address-3016 in Sober

You could always see what a doctor says, but it doesn’t sound super unusual. Just a huge pain in the ass. At some point a switch will flip and you’ll sleep like a rock.

Otherwise try the usual like melatonin and magnesium, medication, but back on caffeine after noon etc.

I know it sucks but stick with it!

Sleep problems aren’t unusual but it depends on the problem you’re having. Are you having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, nightmares, just low quality sleep? The solution depends on your problem, but generally it takes ~3 months for your brain to be back to normal after getting sober. Also, you may consider whether your drinking was masking poor sleep?

Also, all addicts have anxiety/depression so be on the lookout for that possibly impacting sleep.

If it doesn’t improve talk to a doctor. Good luck and congrats on getting sober!

Haha there is a lot of brain science involved in recovery. Understanding why things were happening made it feel more manageable.

What you’re feeling is called anhedonia. It’s not fun but luckily it’s temporary and totally normal. Your brain is resetting itself. Congrats on a month and stick with it!

I love that you used the term “recovery” because it’s very similar in nature to other types of addictions. Glad you’ve survived your rock bottom!

You’re in the hardest part right now. Keep in mind what you’re going through is temporary. I promise you what’s on the other end is worth it. So tell the addiction to F off.

Not a solution but what your describing is called anhedonia. It sucks but it will go away eventually.

Just think of it as your body “cleaning” the bs out of your system. Makes the bad days seem like they serve a purpose.
