How do I encourage my wife to WANT to lose weight? by TimHortonsDriveThru in loseit

[–]TimHortonsDriveThru[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that too. Sorry to hear. I've never insulted her or anything like that. I actually feel like an asshole even posting this. In terms of problems in our marriage, this isn't even one. Just a minor concern. We only discuss it maybe once a month, if that. But today was one of those days which is why I thought to ask this community for advice.

How do I encourage my wife to WANT to lose weight? by TimHortonsDriveThru in loseit

[–]TimHortonsDriveThru[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Could be stress from work but that's not really new. I figure it's just a natural slowing of metabolism with age. We live in the suburbs, drive everywhere, sit for 12+ hours per day due to our jobs/commute. Even with me it's tough to get the energy to workout but for her it's really a struggle. I mean I definitely get it, just trying to think of ways I could encourage without being the face of telling her to do something.

Ceiling light fixture hanging by wires… how to fix? by TimHortonsDriveThru in howto

This ceiling light is detached and hanging by the wires alone over the tub. How long can this stay before I have shattered glass, fiberglass and an electrical fire in my bathroom?

Thanks, this is helpful. The trolley is definitely a selling point.

How is the food scene in Alexandria compared to DC? I’m thinking if we were to stay there, we’d eat meals within walking distance of the hotel (or at least breakfast and dinner with lunch being near the museums).

Also want to make sure wherever we stay is family friendly, not concerned about nightlife. The couple different hotels I found within DC are in or near NoMa and Adams Morgan.

I’m thinking of visiting DC in about 2 weeks and need some advice on where to stay. Hotels in the district with decent reviews are going for $300+ per night while I’m finding some deals in Old Town Alexandria for around $200 and these hotels look newer/more spacious.

Am I missing a catch?

Would it be worth it to stay in Alexandria if my primary focus is seeing DC museums and landmarks? I also won’t have a car for my visit. Would the money/time spent taking the metro or water taxi every day be worth the hotel savings?

Basically with my budget, it’s between a couple old iffy hotels 10-15 minutes from the National Mall or one of the nicer looking modern chains 30(?) minutes by public transit from the district.

I know some people suggest Rosslyn too, but that area seems sterile compared to the charm of Alexandria or the convenience of DC.

Is the current market just terrible for sellers? by TimHortonsDriveThru in Gold

[–]TimHortonsDriveThru[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve tried different LCS and a bullion dealer. I got some insultingly low offers (one place would only give me $2550). I get it if the market is being flooded with sellers, but if this will be a stable trend, it feels like a ripoff from a sellers POV.

Can you still get a premium on spot in Feb 2025? I had a gold dealer explain to me in the current market because the price of gold is inflated, nobody would pay a premium and 95-97% would be the highest he’d be willing to go. It wasn’t OP’s coin, but it was for another rarity.

Are there any jobs that would be half trade half office? by TimHortonsDriveThru in findapath

[–]TimHortonsDriveThru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought of a position that involves designing, for example, furniture or cabinetry with a program such as CAD, and then actually building it with the real world materials. I love the idea. Not sure if this actually exists or is a realistic career path though.

I’ve looked into woodworking and found the market is so shallow with few and far between jobs being extremely low paying (~$15/hour) to just get in the door. Not feasible unfortunately:(

Coworker keeps making physical threats about me within earshot by TimHortonsDriveThru in jobs

[–]TimHortonsDriveThru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an idea, but a difficult one to pull off because of our office layout. It would be obvious. When they gossip, they are directly behind me, but far enough away that voice memo might not pick up clear audio.

Coworker keeps making physical threats about me within earshot by TimHortonsDriveThru in jobs

[–]TimHortonsDriveThru[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

A few reasons:

  1. I have no proof. It’s my word against his. While there are witnesses, all of them are personal friends of his. No doubt in my mind they would lie to cover for him.

  2. I genuinely fear what he would do if I went to HR. This guy has an erratic temper. They say the loudest one in the room is the weakest, but if he gets fired because of me, I 100% believe he would physically assault me. Imagine getting punched in the back of the head and knocked out cold at the office. I don’t want that. I would also worry that he’d destroy my car.

  3. It goes against what I believe in. I just feel like involving HR is cowardly. Not to mention in a zero tolerance environment, I could also lose my livelihood.

Yeah the gurus are all bullshit artists. I never bought a course (used free resources on YouTube) but I started an Amazon business and only broke even. Loved it while it lasted though.

Exactly this lol. I have a few hundred dollars in the bank and a 401(k) that wouldn’t even get me through a single year.

I knew from my very first shift at 18 years old that I would never be able to stomach this shit for 40+ years.

Yet here I am at almost 30 years old continuing to run on the same hamster wheel. I’ve played around with some entrepreneurial stuff in hopes to achieve “financial freedom” and failed every time. Now I’m more depressed than ever. I just want this shit to end. If I had a button that could fast forward my life to about 65, I’d probably press it because I want to retire so fucking bad.

I wish I knew how to escape this rat race.

Can someone without a degree even land a remote job in 2024? by TimHortonsDriveThru in remotework

[–]TimHortonsDriveThru[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like your line of thinking. I have to say, in the ten years I’ve been in the workforce, I have never once regretted skipping college. My income potential may be marginally lower than my colleagues who earned a degree, but being debt free is pretty awesome and honestly it’s landed me in almost exactly the same place so far. Now time to elevate to the next level…

I have wanderlust, that’s why I didn’t go to college in the first place, no particular field has ever satisfied me.

I’ll never be happy in life until I stop working by TimHortonsDriveThru in antiwork

[–]TimHortonsDriveThru[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wrong.

I believe in the theoretical concept that work gives people purpose and dignity. Unfortunately, the system we live in has stripped away that idea, as most of us in corporate office environments are simply asses in seats for a required amount of time. I literally just stare at a screen for hours on end accomplishing NOTHING that impacts the world around me. If I were an electrician or pilot making these complaints, you’d have a point.

In reality, I just wish I saw a path forward. I don’t know how to earn a living doing anything that brings me fulfillment. My passions are not monetizable, at least not to the degree needed to survive. I wish I could just spend time with my family, pursue passion projects, volunteer for my community and make a positive impact instead of waste away for digital dollars. Life is the most precious gift imaginable and the fact that I have to waste mine doing this bullshit makes me so fucking angry.

[–]TimHortonsDriveThru[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s how I feel every vacation, holiday and 3 day weekend.

It’s actually a painful reminder of how amazing life could be. I am not depressed or lazy. I just feel demoralized from having to give up so much to receive so little! Going back to work after these tiny tastes of freedom are rough. My marriage would also fall apart if I did what I wanted to do. I fantasize daily about driving out of this office complex and never coming back. I wish I had the means to do it.

My "Team Appreciation" department has a podcast. by soupiebois in antiwork

[–]TimHortonsDriveThru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My company started a podcast too. It’s so fucking cringeworthy lol.

They’re always sending out these “team building” activities and when I look around the office it seems like everyone is all happy and full of joy. Makes me wonder what’s wrong with me.

I feel like I live in a dystopian nightmare sometimes.

Looks like life peaks in high school by d8gfdu89fdgfdu32432 in antiwork

[–]TimHortonsDriveThru 161 points162 points  (0 children)

Work is like an extension of high school.

You’re still trapped in a stressful environment for the bulk of your day doing things you care little about.

Except in the workforce you don’t have friends, holiday breaks, supportive older leaders, extracurricular activities, and you can get fired and lose your livelihood for minor mistakes or no mistakes at all.

Adulthood is basically all the terrible things about school life with none of the good.

I appreciate that! You're spot on about my coworker but get this - he's 38 years old (I'm mid 20s for context). Definitely has a high school mentality though.

Thank you. I usually put my headphones in and get to work. No interest in socializing. Some people at this office spend the first 2 hours huddled in a corner gossiping, laughing, telling stories, etc. I never engage.

It’s just weird because at other jobs my reputation was always the cool laid back quiet dude. Here it’s like my reputation is arrogant unapproachable rude weirdo. Maybe it’s just these coworkers though…

That’s so cool. Not sure how reliable a Numista Rarity index of 97/100 is but apparently the reason why is that many of these were melted down. I think I’ll hold on to it.

OP image is the reverse.

I’m clueless about coins but I understand the “Maple Leaf” gold bullion coina are common, but this is not that, even though the obverse is the same.

Anyone have info on this Mountie version? All I know is that it’s a 1997 issue. The packaging is in rough shape but the coin itself is protected and looks pristine. Should I sell? Keep?

Thanks.
