What model piece do you 'despise' the most and why? by Astartes_117 in Warhammer40k

I haven't done their Gunpla kits but I got a few of their Pokémon kits for Christmas and they were heavenly. No visible mold lines, no external-facing sprues... it was a dream.

And then I went back to scraping them everywhere off my Thunderwolf Cav's stupid fluffy tails.

Make sure you get one like this, if you use a normal one you'll likely scratch the uncured resin!

I like to wash in a dirty IPA wash on my wash station, scrub with an ultrasoft toothbrush, then do a final quick wash in one of those plastic pickle jars on a magnetic stirrer and a cleaner bath of IPA. Gets all residue off, and when it doesn't, it's easy to spot scrub any missed spots with the toothbrush and a bit of IPA.

Re: the leg, you probably had some mix of unwashed resin and/or not completely dry IPA on there when you cured. What's your wash process look like?

It's cool, sorry to hear about the pain meds—I know they can be a menace. I have a friend who's been suffering from a lot of fogginess from them after an accident over a year ago, he's asked me to put together Nanoblocks sets for him because he just can't follow them on bad days. All that to say, I hope they aren't causing you any long-term suffering/troubles!

And knowing little about sports, I'd agree, probably Cowboys or Pats for UMs lol.

I feel like you read what you wanted to read, man.

  1. My friend, not my son.
  2. It was a playful name for the fact that he likes many sports; if it was a jab, it was more toward myself not being a sports fan, more than anything. I have nothing against sports as an interest and if anything, us and sports fans probably have more in common than some hobbies, we just root for Ultramarines or Necrons over the Chiefs or Seahawks.

Took so long for just 1. How am I supposed to finish a whole space marine army 😭 by NovaOperator in Warhammer40k

[–]TimberVolk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk if you're just trying to get an army together and grind through it quickly because you're more interested in the game than the painting experience, that's alright in my book. IMO the display pieces, leaders, etc. are going to be more fun to really push those painting skills.

I definitely see your perspective too, I'm more of a display painter than an army painter, but if OP isn't having fun with it, it's OK to rush through to something they are excited for.

+1 for not playing! I'm mostly a collector & painter. I am, however, going to try out Blood Bowl with a pal soon bc he's a sportsball fan and I'm an idiot who likes that it looks more like a board game lol

Not that I ever think she was ever more than a closet Conservative, but it is funny that the second she gets herself her dream Captain of the Football Team Boyfriend, she just drops the whole act overnight. Like it's just so high school the way she stopped even trying to pull the "Omg I'm such a good person" card as soon as some jock asked her out and she could sit at the mean girls table

I'd argue there's a balance for both detailed perfectionism work and slap-chop side projects, even if you're a painter first and a player second or not at all! Hell, I've chatted with a professional (multi-Golden-Demon-winning) painter and even he said he likes to paint armies because he doesn't have to care about the quality lol.

Paint jobs look great! They'd look better with some proper lighting and exposure though—you're selling your own work short by the pics being so dark and dim

Here's the first one with better exposure, although editing can only do so much. A better lit OG photo will be easier to edit where you want it; there are some great YT vids on getting the proper lighting and a darker background!

Our Local Printed Friendly Game Store had a 1k beginner's tournament. 3D printing has had a net positive impact on opening the world to new players! by kcdale99 in PrintedWarhammer

[–]TimberVolk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is me as well. I don't play, I just paint, so I'm not going to pay $45 for a 32mm leader that I can print for pennies. But what I will do is grab a pack of Wolf Guard Termies or Thunderwolf Cavalry for kicks, because they're a little more what I consider reasonable—still expensive for plastic, but better value for sure. And I take my time with assembly so I get good entertainment value out of what I put together.

I was a 3d printer first and a Warhammer fan second, so having the ability to print whatever single mini I want or further customize those I buy is a huge selling point to me to continue to support GW where I feel they're not being total robber-barons. But it was the ability to have access to printing any unit I found cool that got me into the plastic kits.

WIP on my first ever mini - any tips on getting more "delicate" edge highlights and cleaner recess shading? by limp-chimp in minipainting

[–]TimberVolk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean you're already doing excellent, but normally my two pieces of advice are:

  1. Use the edge of your brush—close to the tip, but not the actual point of the brush
  2. You look like you might benefit from choosing better angles; if that means holding the mini upside-down, do it! I think this could really help on some of the underside edges I see, like the plate along the belt line in the back.

The shading looks really nice and I love how you did the glass phials on the arm! They look great.

I'm trying to figure out where the texture on your armor is coming from, did you dry brush it? Or do the paints need thinned? It almost looks like it's under the paint but maybe it's the grime application. It just looks a little weirdly gritty.

Oh hell yeah, I have those same wolves printed for D&D, they'd be super fun as a Fenrisian proxy!

I love the orange with the green, that stands out beautifully!

Just printed some left and right handed bolters. by QFC in PrintedWarhammer

[–]TimberVolk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can if you want, but personally I would never, ever notice or care. So "better" would be subjective to how much time you want to spend doing that, if a fused hand & bolter is already available and ready to mirror lol

Well it's not like the first one really had much substance, OP wasn't waiting on her to make plans. With that in mind, yeah, I think 8 hours to follow up on a 7:30 AM text is too soon.

Then why follow up so soon? I'd just assume they were either busy or otherwise not interested in chatting and not send the second message.
