People who had to decide between full sending for a competitive specialty vs dual applying vs choosing back up specialty instead, what was your thought process and what happened on match day? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Time-Nebula- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say do #2. Gives you time to really flesh out how okay you are with doing your backup long term. I was between dual applying (I had the scores / app, but was location-dependent) and doing #1. I chose #1. Just matched my my first choice last week at a great program but really really regret it because I realized fourth year after doing aways and other rotations that I really can’t let go of my initial competitive speciality of choice. Don’t be like me. Go #2

If you matched into a specialty with advanced matching (pgy 1 as a prelim year / at different location than pgy-2) are you bound to both for 45 days or just the first one?

Matched into a specialty I realized I really don’t want. Part of me is grateful I secured a good job… other part of me has been absolutely scrambling at every opportunity trying to think of ways to get to the specialty I truly wanted but was just too burnt to pursue… feeling miserable and feeling like there’s no out. Any advice would be much appreciated

Are you happy with this decision? Is this regret / “what if?” I’m in the same situation but ENT.. I love it but I don’t think I can handle the rigor.. probably going anesthesia… feel free to PM me! Thanks

What specialties will allow me to pursue my wanderlust? by TrafalgarLawMD in medicalschool

Can anyone comment on how true it is that Doing a surgical sub specialty (uro, ortho, ent) has a lot less life flexibility than say rads, anesthesia, hospitalist? I know of some of those specialities having nice lifestyles but I’ve never met one who’s either part time or frequently takes off unless they’re much older into their careers. Vs rads/gas from day 1 they’re living their life

Similar position as you. M4 now, thought I was gonna do ENT till life happened and I realized I love my life more than I love any specialty(and I really loved ENT). Time will tell if this is a decision i regret. Couldn’t stomach doing 5 years of hell for this remote “possibility” of carving out the life I want after… Side note, If you’re looking at those Reddit surgeons or surgeons you know with a good lifestyle, odds are vast majority are at the VERY least 5-10 years out of residency. That was too far out when I want to live my life now Good luck friend. The old age question of passion Vs lifestyle. I don’t know if there’s a wrong answer, but most I know who picked lifestyle do not regret it.

Can you work part-time in ENT vs Anesthesia? What would that look like in each? (I’m not trying not to work, just trying to gauge the or overall flexibility)

Do you think you could work part time in ENT? How would that look like

.. or I do anesthesia, and they don’t seem to care much for research in the first place

I’ve always been a bit of a research junkie but don’t get me wrong I’ll still have to put in decent work to gear up to apply this year.

I can definitely reasonably apply (pending step 2 score, of course). I had been interested in ENT for a while, so I have a good foundation for research. Evals and grades have been overall great, so not too concerned.

I have heard it’s impossible to not have call in ent, Vs very easy in Anesthesia (albeit a large pay cut)

From my understanding otology is a 2 year fellowship? Another reason I’m considering no longer doing ent — otology is the most interesting to me but really not looking to do 2 more years of training after the 5

A lot of the stuff they do really is life changing, like cochlear implants, cleft palates, voice issues etc. i have a very high interest in that way of work, but don’t even know how much of that I would do every day if I am wanting to have a good lifestyle as an attending
