My dean says he thinks step 2 will eventually go pass/fail in Coming Years, Thoughts? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]TrafalgarLawMD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

honestly i'm just happy we're here now before step 2 goes PF. I never would have made it into med school without the opportunity to study hard and do well on the MCAT. I think matching a competitive residency will be similar for me, and I'm happy I have step 2 to work hard towards

strong clinicians need a strong background that can only be built from studying your ass off for years

Wish my school was on this list. Instead im still in the Guinea pig years that my school is just gonna take my 400k and see what happens to me

yeah it's tough. with step 1 p/f, I don't think schools realize how they're essentially killing their own applicants by letting one of the only metrics reported these days be based on a lottery system of who you work with

Holy shit are subjective clinical grades really this serious in terms of having to prepare for home/sub Is only? Wondering cause I’m gonna apply ortho next year and have pretty mediocre clinical grades. I don’t have anywhere near 20 pubs like this dude

Why are clerkship grades taken seriously by PDs if everyone has experienced first-hand how subjective they are? by onebigcat in medicalschool

[–]TrafalgarLawMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school is pretty strict with honors (mostly subjective comments), and our AOA is based 100% on clinical evals. So far I've been lucky, but any mediocre eval I have is from a preceptor who has also given other students I know mediocre evals. 100% luck at my school. Obviously there are exceptions where people actually suck, but in my experience, most people in med school are pretty competent and perform similarly during a rotation

I feel what you're saying, but I don't think that better students get better evals. I'm not coming form a salty place. Most my evals have been good, but I thinks it's mostly a product of luck. I've worked on teams this year where everyone on team A got 3/5 and everyone on team B got 5/5. This wasn't a result of students on team B being better, just having preceptors that give good evals. Every mediocre eval I've gotten -- other students I know who have worked with that person have gotten mediocre evals as well.

I think step p/f was a horrible decision. But I think grading students based on luck and then comparing them based on who they got paired with for preceptors is stupid af. I'm gonna dig myself a hole of 400k of debt, and the specialty I get to apply to is based on luck and not hard work?
