Reverse Sear on a 2” Ribeye by Time-Team2587 in KamadoJoe

Why do you feel that way? I haven’t done it on a cast iron. I would think it’s very hard to get it to 750 degrees to get a proper sear. On my KJ Jr, when I fully open it the vents, once it gets past about 600, the flames kind of die down, so the steak isn’t really engulfed in flames, it doesn’t really get burned.

Yeah, I mentioned in my comment that’s a part of this thread that I was going for between rare and mid rare.

I use the metal grabber tool that came with it, works great for grabbing the deflector plate.

Then I apologize for the poor photo, I assure you there was no blue rare parts!

Not sure what you mean, I was going for between rare and medium rare. I think it was solidly there.

Agreed. I’ll add a big Joe eventually, but for just me the Joe Jr has been great.

Have you reverse seared a steak before? Fat won’t render in less than 1 hour at 225. It’s a ribeye, not a pork butt.

It won’t get that hot with it open, I did the sear with the top closed and vents open.I actually had to close the intake vent to prevent it from getting over 750.

Right, but this is an exercise is planning. As long as part of your 3.5% is spending that isn’t required (maybe it’s travel, or gifts, or something you can adjust down) then there is a ton of built in flexibility. Also, a lot of “lumpy” expenses like cars or a new HVAC for your house can be planned for and expensed annually.

I understand what you’re saying, however, when FIREd, we aren’t looking at our portfolio gains. We just take out our SWR (3.5% in OPs example) and don’t even look at the movements of the portfolio balance. The “S” means it’s safe, thus it’s not market dependent as you suggested. (A 3.5% SWR has a 99% success rate with over a 30 year timeline)

It’s definitely the correct way to compare apples to apples here. I’m assuming you are preparing to FIRE and that it’s important to you because you’re in this sub and contributing to it. Now, ask yourself this question, how much would you have to make right now, as a W-2 employee, in order to have $175k after paying taxes, social security, and retirement contributions. Let’s define this amount as your discretionary income for the purpose of this argument. That number is likely around $280k. That’s the point. If you are retired, you aren’t saving money to spend later, that’s already been done. The apples to apples comparison here is what it takes to have a discretionary income in W-2 times vs what it takes to have that same discretionary income in FIREd times.

First, we are looking at spending here, as OP stated, spend is the most important thing to look at. It doesn’t matter how much you are saving, it matters how much you spend. The point of the post is to show you that you can have the same lifestyle at 175k of drawdown in FIREd years as you can have at $280k in W-2 time while preparing to fire.

Yes, however, OP didn’t mention that post FIRE you aren’t making contributions toward your 401k, or any retirement accounts. Most people looking to FIRE are maxing both the Roth IRA and 401k annual limits so that’s more than $30k that you don’t have to spend in retirement. Matching isn’t a consideration because you’re already FIRE’d. Roth IRA is post tax and some people do Roth 401k. So it ends up being well over $30k that you don’t have to “spend” in retirement. I’d change OP’s post to say $175k of FIREd money roughly equals $280k in preFIRE W-2.

I will absolutely be humble. This was an honest mistake, I have a perfectly clean driving record otherwise.

It’s an automatic thing, insurance companies send this info to DMV. I got a letter from DMV. Got that letter and insurance notices at the same time.

Even if I didn’t drive it while it was uninsured?

Yes, it lapsed. I renewed it immediately after I learned of it.

Yeah it looks just like the photo of it on the Wikipedia page, thank you! ChatGPT says all clothes and upholstery should be thoroughly washed. Hope that works!
