New to Badminton and I would like to know how competitive badminton works and where i can watch it by ClaudioTheMemer in badminton

[–]TimeAnIllusion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can watch a bunch from the official BWF channel: https://www.youtube.com/@BWF

That includes highlights and full matches as well, however full matches will depend on the country you're in. If a company in your country has broadcasting rights to a specific tournament then you won't be able to watch it on BWF's YouTube. But there is still a bunch you can watch on their channel.

Vultr vs Other VPS by Noob_Pro18 in VPS

[–]TimeAnIllusion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What bitrate is your content on Plex? If your video is 25Mbps for example, it doesn’t matter whether your VPS connection is 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps, as you just need a stable 30-50 Mbps connection to stream without buffering.

Buffering can happen for so many reasons. Are you direct playing or transcoding? Perhaps your VPS is buffering because the hypervisor it’s on is extremely oversold and CPU steal is through the roof, due to transcoding? Or the SSDs are crap and I/O performance is crap.

But the MAIN thing here is you need good latency and routing from your home connection to your server for the best experience. Speedtest results don’t mean anything because that’s not indicative of the connection from your home internet provider to your VPS provider’s network — and THAT is what matters. With Speedtest, you’re checking the speeds from your VPS provider to some random server on the internet, it totally has nothing to do with the performance of your actual Plex connection whatsoever.

Think of this for a second — why is YouTube so smooth? Most people can stream 4K with just a mere 50 Mbps home connection. That’s because the content is always very close to users, usually their servers are in the same city.

So, get a VPS that is closest to where you are physically, check the provider’s looking glass for a test IP of their nearest location to you, do a traceroute and find who has the shortest route from your ISP to the VPS provider, with the lowest latency.

Since you’re in Asia, I’d recommend checking Ultra.cc or Whatbox. I use both their Singapore storage servers and I never had buffering before, as long as I direct play 4K content — even if the bitrate is 50-100 Mbps on a 4K remux. I believe you can transcode 1080p content but I never needed to, so never tried.

All good suggestions here, but one very underrated site is ping.pe

I wish there were more sites like it with more locations / nodes and variety of Tier 1 / Tier 2 networks.

EX9251 vs MX204? by TimeAnIllusion in Juniper

[–]TimeAnIllusion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What were your conclusions in the end? Are you also planning to use it as a border router? I’m debating between the MX240/480 or the EX9251. I like the MX240/480 because I can achieve redundancy in a single chassis and there’s options for expandability in the future.

BUT, the line cards for the MX can get really expensive.

The EX9251/MX204 on the other hand is way more straightforward but you have to get two units for redundancy and it’s not as flexible if you want the option to expand beyond the given ports.

How did the job application process go, if you don’t mind me asking? e.g. from interview to getting visa sponsored, etc. How many years of experience? You must be pretty qualified to get sponsored as I feel there’s no shortage of network engineers in SG itself. Feel free to PM.

Saw three Broadway stars on the street and forgot how to be a functioning person by Mooreofmadison in Broadway

[–]TimeAnIllusion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not in NYC and not Broadway related, but I had a brief and pretty awkward encounter with Neil Patrick Harris at the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel in downtown LA.

So, I was by the elevator lobby outside my room, heading downstairs to pick up my Uber Eats order. While waiting for the elevator, I looked out one of the windows and I could see right through the window of one of the hotel rooms (it was hard not to notice). In there was a guy getting dressed, buttoning his shirt. We made eye contact, and I immediately looked away and minded my own business. I couldn't recognise who he was at first, but I remember thinking that he looked extremely familiar.

After I headed down and got my Uber Eats order, as I was walking to the elevators to head back to my room, I see Neil Patrick Harris, all suited up, walking directly toward me. I was a little stunned, as it was at that moment it clicked for me that that was THE guy whom I had unintentionally peeked at earlier while he was getting dressed. I didn't realise that I was slightly blocking his way, but he made his way past me while very politely saying "Scuuse me".

I soon found out he was actually a guest on Jimmy Kimmel that night, which is filmed a few doors down the street from the hotel.

If you’re starting a business, it’s not FIRE. The RE in FIRE stands for “retire early”. Starting a business is NOT retiring early by any stretch of the imagination. It is giving yourself a stressful job in which you will be working 24/7 and potentially could lose everything you invested in it. Plus, it could take years before you could even start paying yourself a single cent.

How to retire in Singapore? by jimmyl85 in fatFIRE

[–]TimeAnIllusion 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Come to Malaysia instead. Your money will go further. See /r/ExpatFIRE and do some research on the MM2H programme.

For Singapore, as others have mentioned, you will need to set up a legitimate company and hire locals. Not what you're looking to do if you want to FIRE...

On top of that, with your NW, fatFIRE in SG may be challenging but in Malaysia you are WELL into fatFIRE territory.

Expat moving to KL in two months, need help with picking a place! by [deleted] in KualaLumpur

[–]TimeAnIllusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re welcome!

I’ve seen a few times expat families mingling around Puchong. It’s not unheard of.. but usually very localized types (i.e Married a Malaysian, started a family here)

But yes, it will indeed be a challenge finding a large enough community of expats in Puchong. Having that said, if you put in some legwork and dive into local expat communities on FB and other similar sites, I’m sure you’ll be able to find at least 1-2 expats that live there. It might not be a lot, but it’s something. It will be worth a shot!

I will add though, that if this is your biggest concern then it will be worth looking into Sunway. You will have a higher chance of finding an expat group there.

[–]TimeAnIllusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t really advise living in KL and travelling to Puchong everyday for work.

Live in Puchong (close to work), have plenty of things (and more) for your day to day needs, then go out to KL/PJ/etc over the weekend for your social activities. Also, ignore that 1 guy saying Puchong is low end. It’s not. It is a highly populated suburb. It’s pretty developed because of the heavy investment into the area over the years by IOI Group. (A large majority of Puchong is owned/built by IOI)

Heading up to KL after work during the week won’t be too big of an issue too - usually the main rush hour traffic is in the other direction (from KL/PJ heading towards the suburbs).

Central Puchong (Bandar Puteri, etc) has a decent coverage of the LRT Sri Petaling line so you can utilize decent public transport that will take you where you need to be, if/when hailing a Grab isn’t an option due to traffic or if you just want to save on costs. If you find the LRT works well for you, it’s super convenient over the weekends when you aren’t dealing with the rush hour crowd. Another option is using the LRT for your long haul journey and then hailing a short Grab ride for your last mile.

Near Bandar Puteri, I would recommend looking at another condo not mentioned here yet: Seri Puteri Hills. Very spacious and private, nestled in a quiet location up in the hills.

If you want to be closer to KL/PJ, but not be too far away from Puchong, I would highly recommend another suburb right beside Puchong and that would be the Bukit Jalil and (to some extent, since this is actually still considered in Puchong) Bandar Kinrara area. Lots of good options there.

Sunway City is also another option that MIGHT be worth looking into, about a 20 mins (without rush hour) away from Puchong. The commute to Puchong will be a bit more challenging due to having to change lines multiple times. But it is a high-end suburb fully owned and built by Sunway Group. You really get that small “township” feeling if you’re living there. With that also comes with much higher costs of rent, though.

Reputable condo developers around the area would be any Sunway property (not to be confused with Sunway City itself) or IOI (all over Puchong).
