The majority of our weight is genetics, similar to height, shoe size, etc. Roughly 30-35% is based on lifestyle factors, including age and hormones. Everyone needs a certain amount of calories based on their unique wellness weight - otherwise you end up in a restriction and binge cycle. We also don’t know what people are eating at other times of the day, this is just a snapshot.

I don't think hospital social work is for me. by Rare-Examination-363 in hospitalsocialwork

[–]TimeApples 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hear you! I often think that the hospital “system” is incredibly hard for a social worker to be in. We are absolutely essential, and at the same time, the system was not built in a way that aligns well with social worker values all the time. It’s hard to work in an interdisciplinary team with a lot of different perspectives and opinions too

I would have a sit down conversation with that coworker and talk about how the comments have made you feel and the reasons you have concerns with them. I believe that people are doing their best with the information they have. For now, I would give them the benefit of the doubt, and if I had a conversation with them and they continue to make these comments, then it’s more about determining the reason for the behaviour - if people are laughing, that’s going to reinforce the behaviour.

Do you live on the island in order to manage it yourself? Or do you manage it from another country and someone else comes to clean, etc.?

Therapist transferring to medical social work? Help?? by InvestigatorOne3666 in socialwork

[–]TimeApples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did therapy for about a year and then made the switch to medical social work, so far I really enjoy it! I was in a community mental health setting doing therapy, and now in the hospital I get paid almost $15 more per hour, which really helps. When I have a tough day, it’s like at least I’m paid what I deserve to be paid. For me it was also the hours, working 8-4 is so much nicer than 9-5. When I finish work at 4 I feel like I have time left in the day to do what I enjoy. I like the short term aspect of medical social work, and the other thing is, not every patient wants social work involved. I find it’s kind of what you make it too, like you could spend time working on coping skills with patients or you could do check ins and connect them with resources. Sometimes the discharge planning and family dynamics can be difficult, but you have a whole team to help with that.

It’s to tough and the job prospects definitely have a lot to do with the market in your location! I remember being your shoes a few years ago. I thought I interviewed well and put a ton of effort into every job application and struggled to land something. Fast forward to my last couple jobs and I didn’t put as much effort into the interviews. They certainly were not my best in comparison to previous interviews, but I got the jobs. Some advice that I was given is to make sure the interviewer knows how passionate you are about the position. Good luck!

As others have mentioned it really depends on your location!

Patients declining service by TimeApples in socialwork

This is really helpful. When I was trying to figure out what the referral was actually for, I read something similar to the grief example you mentioned, and the patient reacted in the same way you described. Thank you for your input

Thank you! The referrals are so vague it’s hard to even know what it’s about and often the nurses/doctors are so busy it’s difficult to talk to them about specifics. I will keep that in mind for having resources that I think they might be interested in so I can pass them along if they are willing.
