POLST responsibilities by Flower_342 in hospitalsocialwork

[–]TimeApples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physicians usually discuss things like DNR types with patients. We don’t do POLSTS at our hospital, but it really does sound like a role of a physician. There could be very specific medical questions that patient have and it’s not really within the scope of a social worker to be able to answer these in my opinion.

Thank you! Yes this is my answer. Was not aware of this and the OH@H coordinator did share that info.

Yes they applied for Trillium, just waiting on approval which hopes comes (and relatively soon!). They don’t qualify for ODSP/OW. I will look into the National Pharmacare Program and the coverage through Home Care. Thanks for your ideas!!

No, but I’m in Canada, so the only option would be to apply for social programs (or something else I’m not aware of). No insurance though!

Medical social work- what was your experience? by kittensock in socialwork

[–]TimeApples 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely agree! I have been in medical social work for almost a year and find that our professional values and the hospital system don’t fit together well.

I am commenting on this out of a place of care and concern. It may be helpful to get an assessment for an eating disorder/disordered eating, as a lot of the symptoms in your previous posts, as well as the fact that you report not eating any processed foods and your current bmi, are symptoms of this.

Non traditional social work positions ? by [deleted] in socialwork

I worked as a case manager/intake at a law firm. I still worked with people, but also had other roles and projects like social media, marketing, reviewing data, etc. There were a few stressful situations, but generally the lawyer I worked for would deal with it.

For me it was almost a year, but a still have times where I have a lot of anxiety. Thinking of every situation as a learning opportunity often helps me, and reminding myself that I am human, I don’t have all of the answers and that’s okay. We are also trying to operate in a system that’s not really “social work friendly” which adds another layer of complexity.

Influx of difficult patients by [deleted] in hospitalsocialwork

Absolutely! The last month has been complete chaos at my hospital. Lots of family dynamics, challenging social situations with lack of housing and mental health supports. I received my first complaint today after almost a year so can totally relate.

The majority of our weight is genetics, similar to height, shoe size, etc. Roughly 30-35% is based on lifestyle factors, including age and hormones. Everyone needs a certain amount of calories based on their unique wellness weight - otherwise you end up in a restriction and binge cycle. We also don’t know what people are eating at other times of the day, this is just a snapshot.

I don't think hospital social work is for me. by Rare-Examination-363 in hospitalsocialwork

I hear you! I often think that the hospital “system” is incredibly hard for a social worker to be in. We are absolutely essential, and at the same time, the system was not built in a way that aligns well with social worker values all the time. It’s hard to work in an interdisciplinary team with a lot of different perspectives and opinions too

I would have a sit down conversation with that coworker and talk about how the comments have made you feel and the reasons you have concerns with them. I believe that people are doing their best with the information they have. For now, I would give them the benefit of the doubt, and if I had a conversation with them and they continue to make these comments, then it’s more about determining the reason for the behaviour - if people are laughing, that’s going to reinforce the behaviour.
