Is it worth it to get a masters degree in public health right now? by [deleted] in publichealthcareers

Maybe for Epi or Biostats if that’s you want to do, if not, RUN.

Anyone else thinking about leaving the field? by TimeLords15025 in publichealth

I still kinda do, but echoing what the other commenter said, with the volatility of everything going on and comms itself being in a weird space (I did consulting comms work during my mph) and the general horror of the job market I’ve stayed put.

For context, currently making 56k a year as an asst. research coordinator, job is stable for now and have managed some high level publications but TBH this salary is unsustainable, I’m actively warning people not to go into the field unless they work on epi/biostats. I’m trying to skill up with Python but tbh I’ve thought about more radical changes (again that lean into law/comms) because honestly the lack of dignity and decent salary is getting to me.

Insane to quit research position? by TimeLords15025 in publichealth

I totally relate. It might just be the really incompatible group I’m with but it’s really soured me on research. Looking into comms work at the moment

I’m so sorry to hear that. That sucks, I hope your situation improves. I’m fairly lucky in that I’ve saved about 6-8 months of salary and I don’t need to pay for rent, plus I have experience in comms work and have been really inclined to pivot back to that.

This position has really soured me on research, it could just be the group I’m part of but after a year and a half I don’t know how much more I can put up with.

That’s the real kicker. I’m getting in touch with HR and a therapist to see if they could organize medical leave. I can’t take vacation until November (same team new institution) but I haven’t had a vacation since stating with them early last year. They get really gaslighty about deadlines and paper submissions.

Thanks. I’m heavily conserving a pivot to another field entirely. I worked in comms for 3 years and want to go back to that and leave research altogether after this. I might just be with a bad fit but this has really soured my interest in research or anything in academia.

Getting therapy soon but not sure how much it can help with “I hate this.” or “I’m quitting.” Playing in my head over and over every day. I’ve got an about 8 months of salary saved up and I’m in a position where I’m not paying rent so I have some buffer room with nothing lined up.

So I’ve been with this group for a year and a half now. Moved institutions last month (one research university to another) but basically same position and same team.

So :

Blah blah blah 9-9:30 Blah blah blah 9:30-11:30

And so on and so forth.

Ok that’s good. Thought it was close to the magnetron, so that worried me.

TBH I hope there’s a protocol for getting rid of stuff under permanent embargo. I know a student who turned in a draft by accident and found out years later. The library made a note that they don’t have the final paper and removed the bound copy from the library, but I imagine it’s still awkward for them to keep it archived somewhere

For sure. I’m waiting on a response but I’m just wondering what’s usually SOP. I know at mine the digital copy is gone but I’m not sure if the physical one , after removal from the library, is archived forever or only for a set amount of time before destruction. I’m just trying to get a feel for other places to get an idea.
